Possibly because not everyone is enraptured by Saber's character? That's why games (and their adaptations) such as Fate/stay night often have several different types (or perhaps, archetypes) of female/male characters present - so that the player/reader/watcher is able to relate to their own personal favourites, and can safely ignore those they don't like as much. This is slightly different in terms of Fate, of course, due to the multi-layered plotlines that require multiple playthrough. But regardless, claiming that people who don't care much for a particular character in any medium are "insertyourfavouriteinsulthere", is quite frankly a bit shortsighted. -Andiyar

She just happens to be there
Nonono just joking--Rin's there to monitor the situation and to guide Shirou through the mana transfer process, as Shirou lacks the knowledge to connect the his magic circuits and Saber's. And I admit I play erogames myself, got a problem with it? |

That reaction usually comes from guys(I still remember the shocked look on my first boyfriend when I told him about hentai)
Because she's not Saber's master--only a master can grant their own servant mana...(I guess) The problem with Shirou is that he is not a full fledged magician, so he doesn't know how to switch on his magic circuit--every time he uses magic he has to generate a new one until later in the story, which partially explains the huge amount of magic circuits he has even though he's not from a magical family. (Mahou Shounen Shirou anyone?) Anyways, because Shirou's magic circuits are half-developed, it cannot be connected to Saber's magic circuits, which results in the incapability of mana transfer normally. And the alternative method of mana transfer is the exchange of body fluid, which means, sex. yum. |

alright, so shirou "exchange" body fluids with saber, but does tha explain why rin os there to exchange stuff too? i think shirou knows how to f*** already without rin's guidance, i think rin was just there for show as the japanese artists are perverted and echii

Just exchanging body fluid is not enough in Shirou's case, since he doesn't know how to turn on his magic circuit properly, Rin has to be there to keep Shirou's magic circuit on in order for his and Saber's magic circuit to be connected in order for the possibility of mana transfer.

It's because of all the settings of the mana transfer...blame Nasu for that...
Though i admit I was (at least half) looking forward to the H-scenes. And to add: she didn't join in--she was just by the side all the time, and spent a little time teasing the two of them in the beginning. |

I personally wouldn't consider this the "best anime ever". The animation was average, the storyline was good but lacking (anime wise), and the whole thing felt rushed. There are so many things going on at once and felt like an "enemy of the day" robot anime until the very end; it really didn't give me enough time to digest and grasp the situation. The anime also did a really poor job with background explanation for characters other than Shirou & Saber. I still think it was pretty good but definitely not something I'd rewatch again. |
