is sennin actually a rank or somthing? like is it after chuunin, or its just some jap word that i have no idea what it means?

It's not actually a military rank.It means that they are super strong like hokage.

And it is a jap[anese] word. According to my dictionary, it means hermit, wizard, or fairy. In context, it probably means some combination of all three.

no, Sannin means 3 people, as nin is the japanese word for person, but as we're watching a ninja anime, we'll just assume nin is short for ninja ;-) Senin is hermit and what not

Anyways, I'm in a good mood now, so I'll add a little FAQ about the Sannin to avoid future questions

What is the Sannin?
Sannin stands for "3 people", as Dragon-san said. But specifically in Naruto, Sannin stands for the 3 Legendary Ninja. Alone, they're referred as a Sennin (hermit). Like:

"Cool! It's Sennin Jiraiya from the Sannin!"

Who are the Sannin?
Orochimaru, Jiraiya and Tsunade.

Why are they legendary?
By the fact they are ubberly strong and they were trained by the best Hokage of all times, Sarutobi the 3rd Hokage.

Is Sennin a military rank?
No. Sannin is just the way-to-call the legendary trio Oro-Jiraiya-Tsunade. There are no Sennin besides them, nor there are any Sannin in other country besides the Leaf. By military ranks, they're still Jounins, cause there's only one military rank above Jounin, and that's Kage.

well...ther is sannin .. which is what Jariaya is .. and then there is sennin .. which is a hermit... ero sennin is juss sumthing that naruto was calling jariaya instead of sannin juss to pick on him .. ero sennin means Pervert Hermit

Uh... no, I didn't

I clearly stated that the Sannin stands for the 3, while Sennin stands for them alone. The 3 Sennin of the Sannin, simple like that

No, you're awfully wrong. Sannin stands for Orochimaru-Jiraiya-Tsunade, while Sennin stands for one of them alone, as clearly stated in my post.

Ahh....There are 3 legendary Sennin but when refered to them as the group of three, they are Sannin....Jaraiya, Orochimaru and Tsunade are the tree legendary Sannin. Sannin meaning 3, referring to them.
If you listened to vicious you could have figured all of this out.

i dont think so that the meaning of saninn is the 3 legendary ninjas.......saninn i think it is only legendary ninjas.......i said that because, if naruto becomes the legendary, and there is no more 3 legends but it is four...........and sannin should replace to wut huh??see! im smart.....

san = 3
nin = person

san+nin = sannin = 3 people

senin = hermit

Tsunade = Slug Hermit
Orochimaru = Snake Hermit
Jiraiya= Toad Hermit

together the three senin = Sannin

sennin literally means 仙忍 or 神忍 which i think it just means legendary ninja (godly nins) ninjas at really high ass lvls, Jairaya refers him self as Gama-Sennin probably means hes the legendary frog nin.

Actually Df is wrong, nin doesn't mean person here.
The kanji nin is the chinese reading of shinobi (onyomi), it's the same nin used in ninja.
