Recently Aizen said "Shinigami fight with reiatsu" when he negated Soifon's bunshin technique in FKT . Meaning any weapons, abilities, and/or clothing that appears after releasing their Zanpakuto. Is merely the manifestation--an extension of the Shinigami/Hybrids own reiatsu.

In Ichigo's case. His Shihakusho changes when he goes Bankai.

Therefore it's generated by how much reiatsu is released at that time.

Normally when Ichigo fights and he gets injured. His clothing doesn't usually get torn. If it's suddenly shredded..it means he's losing power. He's running low on fuel.

This also explain why his Zangetsu doesn't go into Shikai when Ichigo loses consciousness. Because the Zanpakuto is supposed to revert to it's sealed state. When the it's user loses conciousness. In Zangetsu's case he a full time release type. So he should go back to his Shikai form, once Ichigo loses conciousness. Yet Zangetsu doesn't do so, even when Ichigo is literally "dead to world"

When Ichigo fought Ulquiorra, the second time. The top half of his Shihakisho was missing. Ulquiorra had given him a nearly fatal blow an he was nearly dead. Yet he was still in Bankai. (Orihime replenished his reiatsu so he could fight Grimmjow)

So that means at that point he was at just over Captain level. (Maybe a little more) It just. wasn't exactly "twice the reiatsu of a Captain" Yet it was still enough generate his bankai. Despite him losing conciousness Because he has twice the reiatsu of a Captain. Because Shihakisho at banki is generated by "how much" reiatsu he has released "at that time". Not only can you tell by his Shikakisho. If he's fighting at Noob Captain level or Aizen level. You can actually predict how strong his opponent truly is. Because you can literally see how much damage he took after a hit . Just by looking at, how much of his Shihakisho is left intact afterward.

The reason being: Unohana thought Ichigo was at full power. Which means he had to be at a mere Captain level. Since she couldn't tell his reiatsu wasn't fully restored. The reason she surmised that he twice the reiatsu of all the others. Because he was in Bankai and his reiatsu didn't feel any different than hers at the time. Yet he wasn't at full power...

none of that explains why he stays bankai even while unconscious or dead.

It makes sense. It explains why Zangetsu doesn't revert to shikai when Ichigo is out cold. It explains why the Hougyoku was able to work inside of Rukia once she came into contact with Ichigo

It explains why Ichigo was so weak after Ulquiorra hit him with the cero. It explains a lot. Think about it for a second...

I don't see why he had trouble fighting his way up to Kenpachi then, if he has always had captain-class reiatsu (and twice as much, according to you), he should have killed half his enemies in SS with nothing but spirit pressure. He started out weak and progressively grew stronger.
