Episode 5's airdate is listed for Tuesday, November 18? I'm confused. The NHK site still has it for two Saturdays from now, but they aren't that fast at updating the site either. Of course, we just have to wait for Saturday to see how it is, but this still has me puzzled.

Probably a typo, that 11/18. The anime page gives it as 1st Nov. Btw, titles for Episode 5, 6 and 7 are out:

#5: クリスマス・イブ Christmas Eve
#6: 夜明けの迷い子 Lost Child of Daybreak
#7: 水楓（すいふう）の乙女たち Girls of Water Maple

Episode 9 will be The Changing Battlefield. It seems like the anime will finish Akatsuki's arc, then go back in time to revisit Shiroe's side, then conclude his arc.

Yes, episode 8 is the last of Akatsuki's arc; episode 9 is back to Shiroe.

Episode 7 probably covers chapter 4 of volume 6.

I'm rewatching season two because it's been so long.

In episodes 7/8 Akatsuki complains about how unhappy she is being short. I believe her actual human player is also on the short side, which makes me wonder why she chose a character model like Akatsuki's when she joined the game. You'd think she'd pick a taller character.

Um, she chose a male taller avatar and only changed it to her current form when they all got sucked into the game?

Yeah, because she had trouble moving around in a body type dissimilar to her regular one.

There's also the fact that one thing is to have a game avatar of the opposite sex another is to be that avatar. Not everyone would be fine with that.

I remember it was also mentioned that in the long term that affects people psychologically and their personality slowly become more attuned to their new body.

BTW I wonder, if Akatsuki was able to make that choice now, with her current feelings for Shiroe and knowing better his tastes, would she still choose the same avatar or something more... endowed?
