If what you said is true, then it's indeed a disappointing development. The characters here progress and develop every single episode. Not a single character in this series is the same as we first met them. Think how our perception about Menma's dad has changed since the first episode. We can't say the same for Hanasaku Iroha, even though it is slated for 24 episodes. I'll end my thoughts on that show here since this thread is about AnoHana.

This is a very good episode. I can't find any humor in it and I am rather impressed with how the series portrayed the ways parents grapple with the pain of losing their child in a very mature and understated manner.

For a moment i thought Menma went back to her child form or is it that she is standing lower behind them on a hill making her appear smaller?

Wow. Another excellent episode. 8/10 vote from me.

It IS melodramatic, although in the good way for me - kinda like Aria or Clannad After Story could be at times. I like that kind of thing.

I kinda had the feeling that the fireworks wouldn't be the wish she wanted fulfilled ... looks like it may have been something for Jintan, though. It was good to see Menma's mother beginning to have some "closure" with her child's death.

On a personal level I hafta agree with the others that it is a pity that Tsuroko and Anaru couldn't have fallen for people who could return their affection ... they come across as really nice people.

And it ended on a mini cliffhanger again.... Next week is the last episode iirc, so all should be resolved then. Hmm. Really has me wondering.

I bit my lips and stayed still through the whole last scene -- closest I've come to crying for a show in years.

GODDAMMIT JINTAN!! I know it hurts, I know I know, but can't you just...?

as long as Menma disappears at the end I would give the series a 10.

this episode is very "normal" for me. because i expected more than just fireworks, but at the end, that's pretty much it.

all the characters are acting unexpectedly normal. without any twists.... which is a surprise to me.

i feel that tsuruko should be more developed... but then again...maybe that's the key that would spoil everything at the end.

now, maybe i'm thinking too much, but the girls saying "jintan" is irreplaceable, could that be some sort of foreshadowing...or maybe a twist at the end that i'm expecting?

I agree.
80% of her beauty comes from the nape of her neck when she put her hair up, I believe.

I think she grew her hair out to be like Menma and hoped that Yukiatsu would like her. Now she's like SCREW THIS and cut off her hair? Dunno.

Aaaah I hope they develop Poppo and Tsuruko a bit more in the last episode.

Ack, I resisted for 9.5 episodes but there were a couple of scenes that finally broke me down. Most specifically when Menma hugged her brother, but at the end there was just a general buildup of 10 weeks worth of emotion that finally breached the dam. Even though I knew the fireworks thing wasn't going to be the real wish.

Did anyone notice Menma was sparkling when Jintan was staring at her as she slept?

I hate Yukiatsu. Period. It's like he lives solely for the purpose of screwing Jintan over.

Is that a Denpa Onna based objection?

In looking back, it seems obvious now that the selfishness of grief is a recurring theme of this series - not just Menmama's grief, but everyone's. Emotion is, at it's heart, usually a selfish thing - we feel things because we feel them, and we react based on that. Rather than condemn each other for this - and condemn ourselves - we need to accept it. Selfishness is a fundamental part of who we are as human beings, but that doesn't mean we can't let others into our lives to share our pain. I suspect the ending will touch very strongly on this - the acceptance of our grief, and the willingness to rise above it and allow others inside the shell we've created. It applies to Jintan, and it applies to all the other major characters as well. If Menma has any wish that will truly satisfy her soul and allow her to move on in peace, that would seem to be a good start.
