Ya know, I've always wondered if the horrors of x264 VfW were truly visible to the average user... What percentage of viewers actually get shafted by these bonehead encoders?

If most people don't care about playing softsubbed MKV releases in VLC then I doubt that any...

(ok, maybe I put a bit too much sarcasm there...)

Microsoft's native AVI splitter works just fine under those conditions, yes.

Hmm posting late night is stupid...

They break YV12 + CoreAVC 1.3

If you're using 1.2 it shouldn't cause any borkage. Not sure about earlier then that...

But both 1.1.0.5 and 1.2 has those nasty blocking bugs.

Then perhaps it's time for an intervention with Serin's staff and enlighten them...

I think that's a decoder issue (the blocking) rather than a container one (right?). And from what I've heard 1.3 fails even more than the previous versions... >_>

Either way last time I tried to open an h264 AVI file through VfW using libavcodec I learned that it was murder. Maybe DeathTheSheep's build would work better, well it's not like it matters that much since it's just stupid to do in the end.

Kinda went offtopic here... Gomen.

It's not off-topic. The premise of this topic is to discuss the reason why x264 in avi in mkv is just as bad as x264 in avi.

/me is scared to ask but... Could somebody explain to me:

"x264 video encoded from the VfW encoder is quite different from video encoded from the CLI (command-line) encoder, and not just in terms of quality."

My bits of knowledge tell me something about Vdub beinf vfw, and MeGui having a command-line-parameters line... But I don't quite get it... Or a link to the thread where the P2A thingy happened or something... If this is off-topic...

/me hides

lol.... mp4 is an audio codec?

mp3 is -NOT- mpeg-3. It is Mpeg-*1* Layer 3... IE the audio layer... lol.

I'm assuming that they just skipped over mpeg-3 and called it mp4 (mpeg-4) to avoid confusion on this issue (although I have not looked that up at all).

that reading was amusing ^^.

MPEG-3 was dropped after they realized that what they had planned for it (basically HD MPEG2) could easily be added on to MPEG-2. They then skipped 3 for the next big thing to avoid confusion. wiki link.

Wow... Their staff is so ignorant. The moment MKV started winning in the polls, they change the vote tally, claim that I tampered, and banned me.

Starks is unrelated to CCCP Inquisitioning. Any/all newbosity on his part is a standalone game, Starks V: Stark's Quest. Of course there could be a CCCP Expansion to this game...it is yet to be seen.

Well, proper HD subs of a certain licensed anime are certainly worth fighting for...

I have a problem with a raw

Spoiler:

see that missing line of pixels? what error did the encoder make to get this to happen?

and can this be fixed with MKVtoolnix or would just re-encoding the whole thing with after effects be faster?
