I disagree. Shaft's references are too random and irrelevant.
Kyoani and Gainax uses references that are actually relative to the situation, and thus funnier.

In American terms, Family Guy is the former (random), South Park and Simpsons fall in the latter.

Its not that they're allowed,but rather no one knows of the light music club's existence.Beside i think no other clubs were in need for that music room,so all 4 of them just did things as if their club has been establish and approved officially.

To be frank,after Mio,i started to like Nodoka in this episode.Actually i already had an eye for her since episode 3,but episode 5 completely made me fall for her.The short hair style + meganekko of her really turns me on..she completely reminds me of Yuki Nagato and Tabitha,except with brightier personality.

And her pairing with Yui in certain occasion could really cracks me up,i mean a conversation between a mature,cool type with a childish,airheaded and carefree type can really turns the air into something different.

For the first 4 seconds I though the file didn't agree with my MPC player, but apparently that's just the way the episode went. Quite an awkard way to start off with such a zoomed in still frame. Got a chuckle out of Mio huddling over in the corner, if for no other reason then they are still obviously trying to up her staus as the super moe character of the series. This is balanced almost immediately though by the fact that I am already sick of the one BGM they keep using that started at 3:30. Must be the tune that they want to be the motif for the K-On club, but it's just so....meh. Got a chuckle out of the fact that cake was once again the reason why the K-On group got distracted from club duties though, even so far as formally registering the club goes. That makes how many episodes in a row. Girls need to lay off the cake, it'll be the end of them in so many ways.

The upselling of Sawa-Sensei was amusing thoughl. She's such a classic Kyoani moe series adult female character in how desperately cool she is portrayed as being, that I had to laugh a little. Definitely the coolest character in the show so far, but considering the rest of the cast that's reallly not saying all that much. Just adding an element that is missing, complete with reference to popular hit music comedy series Detroit Metal City to secure her popularity with an important anime fan subgroup. I actually expected her backstory/exposition scene to be a Kyoani anime quality up sequence though, but instead it was just a speed line sequence. Totally miscalled that one. How disgraceful on my part.

Of course regardless of my innacurate forcast she's no stranger to cake, being a member of the K-On club,

Lol again at the back and forth sequnce between Mugi and Yui at 18:00, I don't know what was going on, but it seemed like the most genuinely funny moment of the episode. Mugi even got a sparkly starry background for her efforts.

And lol, my prophecy that K-On would try to outdo Saki in the Yuri area comes true somewhat, if not in the over the top expositon/animation sequence area, at least in the being incredibly obvious about the intentions of the scene area. As if I couldn't tell from her scene before 20:00, they give Mio and Riichan a dialogue to run over the whole idea. Kyoani, you don't explain your gags, you let them run naturally, that way they are maintain their maximum strength.

And of course the episode ends with more "rule of cool sequence" for Sawa-Sensei and Yui as a rock god via an offscreening improvement sequence as well. I really do write these don't I? No way these girls aren't ready. THIS IS K-ON! And right on time for the school festival too. THANK GOD THIS IS K-ON!

I won't call it before it happens, but I expect a stellar over the top animation quality up sequence for next episode when it comes to the festival performance. For popularity's sake, K-On group ROCK ROCK ON!

So at the end of the day it was so pandering, so predictable, so desperately seeking approval....yet so fun this episode that I cannot help but admit that I enjoyed myself. It's gotta give props for effort and the fact that clearly this show doesn't care what it does or if the comedy is even intentiona as long as it secures whatever popularity oriented goals it has in mind. This of course makes me wonder if should the teacher character prove more popular than Mio will she end up becoming the major focus of the series moe/rule of cool scenario generating machine. That will obviously have to wait until later though. For now, I give this episode a 7.5/10 rounded up to 8 for keeping me amused in a manner of speaking for much of it's run. None of the genuine comraderie building scenes I had kind of hoped for, but congrats K-On, you are so unbashedly yourself in every regard that I can't help but be amused this time around!

The dark side of Sawako revealed, and her reason for treading down that path, as well as why she returned to the light.

(First she became a rock musician to impress her crush, who prefers "spunkier" girls. Then she went further and became Krauser III, and subsequently, a voodoo witch doctor, to which her crush went "That's too much." lol )

Mio continues to be such a blast to tease.

(She's still traumatized by Sawako's death metal singing from last week. )

Even when storyboarding an original scene, all the folks at Kyo-Ani needed to do was simply think up of a scenario where Mio can be teased, and Mio's personality will do the rest.

Mugi is not just the elegant ojou-san, but also a closet yuri fangirl. *Whistles*

Now we'll look forward to Mio singing her new song, much to her embarrassed dismay.

I literally laughed out loud when seeing a scene where Sawako dashes to the photo album. That's a parody to a Thai movie called "Ong Bak" featuring Tony Jaa. The moves aren't exactly the same, of course, but it captured the spirit of the original scene quite well (esp. the dash through hula hoops instead of a roll of barbed wire). Some of the staffs in KyoNi are probably action-film fans.

What I liked: Spoiler: -Mio being scared in the beginning because she is MOE! -Poor, poor Yui getting her finger cut. SHE WAS MOE! -Yui conversation with Sawako during the bandaging of her cut. -Nodoka helping the club! SHE IS COOL! -Mio being super dark aura around. -Mio playing with Ritsu's face. THAT WAS FUNNY! -Ritsu using mags as binoculars and staring at Sawako. -The whole Sawako DASH! ONE AMAZING SHOW OF ATHLETISME! Loved all of this scene![b]Especially the rabbit and turtle depictions. -The whole picture discovery of who Sawako sensei really is. CHRIST SAKE she used to be in the band that all are in now. O_O OMG that is EPIC DISCOVERY. -Sawako suddenly having the guitar and SPLIT PERSONALITY CHANGE! CRAZY! I also liked the sensei playing! SHE HAS AWESOME MOVES! -WOW Sawako used to like a guy!
