As sleepy as I am, I'll attempt some info skimming:

Role of Mobile Suits in the After Colony World
Prior to the appearance of Treize Khushrenada

Their original role was for large-scale construction work manipulator equipment for building.
The anti-Alliance resistance was the first to consider their use on the battlefield.
The technical staff of OZ noticed the activities of the resistance and started an erstwhile development.
In AC175, a setback was suffered following the escape of five engineers centered around the development of the Tallgeese (aka the five scientists)
Seis Clark developed the Leo and Aries and Tubarov the Tragos as replacements for the scientists.
Seis Clark appears to be the older brother of Trant.

Treize's Proposal: Three Units in one Squad

First Battle: Reconnaissance by the Aries, analysis, and a surprise attack to throw off the enemy's front lines.
Second Battle: Based on accurate intelligence from the first battle, the Tragos gun turrets will give cover fire while the main forces Leo's move in to attack.
Third Battle: All power is concentrated on the enemy's main force and if the attack continues until they are surrounded, victory is ascertained.

Mogadishu: Mock Operations Practice

Aries: Treize Khushrenada and Zechs Merquise
Tragos: Lucrezia Noin and Izumi Tarnoff
Leo: Solak Derbruck and Elv Honegger

Various Variations of the Leo

Leo II (Old Chimera)
Leo III (New Model Chimera)

The second half of the story talks about the "first lunar war" at the lunar base.

Very interesting that Trant's brother developed the Leo and Aries. I wonder what happened to Seis.

We'll probably never hear anything more about the pilots that took part in the Mogadishu mock operations practice but it's amazing how few OZ/Alliance pilot names we know. Maybe one of those three became an ace.

Hm... Very interesting, indeed. Is the Mogadishu operation the battle characters are talking about when it's mentioned how Zechs got his 'Lightning Count/Baron' nickname? Or was that a different battle?

Also kinda curious to see the various Leo incarnations and to know about these other pilots- if their names are being mentioned, they're probably going to be important...

Blah, in my fuzziness I put mock operations down instead of what it should be. I was thinking practice as in mock. Dur hur. Mogadishu is where the operations procedure or method of operating (as in what Treize had outlined) was put into practice.

Zechs received his nickname after stopping a terrorist attack on an Alliance base at the J.A.P. point as seen in Episode Zero.

I hope you're right about the new pilots have significant roles. I've been happy with some of the expansions made so far but would like to see completely new, fleshed out characters not directly connected to people we saw in the series.

Another Japanese blog post on FT. From what I could Babelfish, it doesn't really say much except for Master Chang, Father Maxwell and Princess Aurora all having been Gundam pilots.

Also, Cathy is the equivalent of what a Gundam pilot was in the past? @_@

What I'm excited about is next month's issue of Gundam Ace, when they're going to discuss Relena.

Also, in her official profile, Relena's eyes are listed as violet, but in the actual series, they are a greenish-blue.

Well this chapter was about mobile suit history, but I can't really tell if they're talking about the predecessor to the Leo or not... I'd have to check the novel itself to see.
