Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (Evangelion Shin Gekijō-ban Q) earned 1,131,004,600 yen (about US$13,913,200) this past weekend, and thus earned the highest weekend box office in Japan this year. It sold 771,764 tickets on 224 screens.

The third film in Hideaki Anno and Khara's four-part remake of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series sold 443,408 tickets for 648,383,550 yen (US$7,976,200) on Saturday. It then sold 358,356 tickets for 482,621,050 yen (US$5,937,000) on Sunday.

The previous record holder of 2012 was the manga-based live-action Brave Hearts Umizaru film, which opened during the July 14-15 weekend.

I'd go with the people of kotaku.com and say that the plot of 3.0 only works because most of the characters are retarded and/or lack basic empathetic skills. You could say that this in mandatory in this franchise, though. Except for Shinji, character development does not exist and the viewer is left with not more or less information than after 2.0. Altogether, a redundant movie.

Never thought it would be like this. WOW. The time skip....DarkMisato....

I loved Misato before but now it seems like she's just a total bitch. She told Shinji to do something for himself...and now she hates him for doing it. It's not his fault. Hopefully 4.44 makes Misato become a more empathetic character. Very disappointed for my favorite character now.

It sounds really interesting though. I am looking forward to it.

These are just musings and incomplete thoughts just based on spoilers and reviews. I really want to see the movie for myself, then I can say what I think about it and what I got from it.

It seems like one of the things that's mainly rubbing people the wrong way is the way the characters act towards Shinji.

Take Misato for example. She's mainly been supportive of Shinji in what he does. She's always been a motherly figure, cool big sis, and romantic interest to an extent. So I can see why the complete 180 in terms of how she is in 3.0 is jarring. Like Yuuu said, she told him to do things for himself and now she hates him for doing so.

But that being said, she has a reason to be colder, with the Third Impact and all. Shinji is kinda the cause of it happening, and even though he didn't mean for it to happen, it still happened.

Maybe if they spent some more time on the effects the Third Impact had on her and the rest of the cast it would come off better. Plus having Sakura, who lost her brother because of the Third Impact, be kind to Shinji makes Misato seem even colder.

Hopefully they patch together the relationship she and the other characters have with Shinji in 4.0

P.S. She hesitated with the detonator. Showing she still cares for him, even if only a little bit.

The funny thing is, Misato is the one who encouraged Shinji to do whatever he wanted using EVA-01 during the climax of Evangelion 2.0 which lead to Third Impact. Now, she hates him for it .

I have a theory: Note, this probably won't be useful to people until you've actually scene the film since it's based highly on the final scenes.

Okay, so let me lay down some things I'm assuming, most of which have been relatively established as Evangelion cannon in some area or another.

1. Adam came first to earth, had with him the Spear of Longinus.
2. Lillith came second.
3. Spear of Longinus works as a program and/or control mechanism for Adam.

Okay, then the rest is speculation based on the rebuild movies only:

1. The Spear of Cassius was the spear that came with Lillith, but was lost and on the moon (the moon was the asteroid that Lillith travelled to earth on, but got stuck in orbit). Nerv moon base dug it up and Kaoru and Mark 6 brought it back to Earth at the end of 2.0.
2. The Spear of Cassius has a similar function to control Lillith, but since it was stuck on the moon Lillith didn't work exactly right and humans (Lillim) were born (imperfect spawn of lillith). The Spear of Longinus sealed away Adam and kept him dormant until humans activated him by accident causing the 2nd Impact.
3. Either Spear has the power to halt an "Impact", or to basically shut down a Lillith or Adam from going berserk.
4. The spear we see Mark 6 wield in 2.0 is the Spear of Cassius.
5. Kaoru, which is a vessel for the soul of Adam, believes that only with a combined eva that has an "adam" (Kaoru), and a "lillim" (Shinji), plus with the two Spears Longinus and Cassius, that they can finally reset the battle between the two for the world and fix the damage from "almost 3rd impact" somehow.

BUT... What Kaoru finds sticking in Lillith's body is not two different spears, but in fact 2 copies of the same spear, the Spear of Longinus.

This freaks him out. It's actually kind of weird, it's not just that he's confused, it's like he senses something is fundamentally _wrong_ with having two of the same spear. I think this is Anno making commentary about the ShinjixKaoru pairing. I think he's not-so-subtley implying that the right pair isn't two of a kind, if you know what I mean.

Afterwards, when Shinji takes out both Spears of Longinus and 4th impact starts, Kaoru realizes that he's become the 13th Angel and gets his head exploded...

Open Questions and guesses:
1. Where did the second Spear of Longinus come from?

We know from EoE that Seele has the technology to create replicas of the Spear of Longinus (it's the weapons that the mass produced Evas use in EoE). So it could just be a copy. Another more radical idea is that they somehow converted the Spear of Cassius into a Spear of Longinus by something like genetic manipulation. If we interpret them as representing sexes, it would be like neutering the "male" Spear of Cassius. Or maybe more "removing the Y chromosome" would be more appropriate considering the spear's double helix construction evoke DNA (life program).

2. Where is the Spear of Cassius?

Last it was seen was sticking through Eva 01 at the end of 2.0... It didn't seem to be in the tesserect with Eva 01 during the recovery (it wouldn't have fit), so I think either it was converted to the second spear of longinus as I guessed above, or a more radical idea is that it's actually what the AAA Wunder is made from. This latter idea is backed up by the final scene of 3.0, where the Wunder rams Eva 13 to stop 4th Impact, just the same way that the Spear of Cassius stopped it at the end of 2.0... It the Wunder actually IS the Spear, then this would make sense and also help to explain the weird design and amazing power it has.

3. What was Eva 13 for? What is Seele/Gendo's goal?

With 4 arms and a double pilot seat, my first guess would be it was a being that was a combination of a clone of lillith like Eva 01 and a clone of Adam like all the other Evas. Presumably Shinji could pilot it because Gendo stuck in a copy of Yui/Rei's soul into it, and Kaoru could pilot it because he's Adam's soul.
Why exactly you needed a double eva I have an idea...
What if Seele's (or maybe, Gendo's) ultimate plan is to make sure that both Lillith _AND_ Adam wins the battle. The only way to do that would be to make then both "Impact" at the same time, which would kill all life on the planet but then presumably spawn new combines Adam/Lillith life that would have the powers both of the Fruit of Knowledge and the Fruit of Life at the same time.
In other words, the Adam + Lillith race would be true gods.
However I suspect that Gendo's true aim is to have Lillith actually win so he can start instrumentality like he did in EoE, and finally become one with Yui again. How he plans to sabotage it probably has something to do with using Misato and Wille, but I bet we won't see that until 4.0

Note, if you haven't watched the movie I wonder how much sense the above will make?

Probably the most unbiased (and spoiler-free) review you will ever read.

This was a Facebook conversation last night between myself and one of the friends I saw the movie with. Immediately after we watched the movie, she was extremely positive about about it (and I was guardedly positive). However, she later sent me this:

HER: "I'm thinking about Evangelion Q.
The first half is exciting and sensational. I like it."

ME: "But the second half...?"

HER: "I'm not sure how to explain.
ストーリー展開を急ぎ過ぎたと思う。
I think the second half story development was too quickly.
If there were some more episodes between the first half and the latest, the story could make more sense, and I might get a catharsis."

EDIT: I should point out that she likes Eva, but she's not a huge fan. She loved the TV series, but felt no need to see either "Death and Rebirth" or "EoE" (I'm gonna rectify that later this week). She also didn't see the new movies until last August, at my prompting (as in, "You and me, we're gonna see 'Q' together, so we'd better watch these"). She kind of enjoyed 1.11, although she said that at every point, she knew what would happen next. And she was conflicted on 2.22... overall, she thought the movie was good, but she didn't like Mari (for being too "crazy") and thought the song choices were too obvious (for example, "Give Me Wings" at the point when Eva-01 is growing wings).

She really likes Touji, though, so she was glad he was spared from Eva-03's cockpit.

Japan has really strict laws for those things. It's not like nobody is able to make a camrip, it's just that they won't get away with just paying fine

They earned more than 1 billion yen. Evangelion is still a living legend.

I know its a dumb question to ask with the movie just aired and probably the earliest is next year but when will bd/dvd us release or for sale? I can't wait to see it myself.
