In Japan the lyrics of this song was rewritten and is referred as Hoshi no Yo (or "World of the Stars"), hence the reason why the series used this song. Though given my knowledge of Planetarian, the use of the song also has double meaning with the original song's Jesus as well.

Not getting "dem feelz" as of yet but it was a good premiere. I think it could've given a bit more exposition on why the robot had been abandoned but otherwise I have no complaints. What I definitely like is that in this case, the robot is clearly a robot. All too often whenever I encounter humanoid robots in other anime, they seem to be pretty much indistinguishable from humans in terms of intelligence, emotion (and sometimes even bodily functions). That's not a bad thing per se, but it is refreshing to see something different for a change. Here the robot behaves in a way that makes complete sense considering her limitations, like how she's insistent on the MC staying because she's called the repair team and thus assumes everything will be fixed shortly. I also like the way it frames the lamentable nature of Yumemi. It doesn't feel the need to shout it out in your face. It's all implicit in the way Yumemi calmly states all her technical issues without understanding the obvious deeper implications. And the fact that she's unable to understand makes it all even worse (or a small mercy depending on your perspective).

Episode 1

Lol Hoshino sure talks a lot. Outside the whole city is destroyed and inside we have a robot still waiting for customers and trying her best not to anger the first customer in 29 years which is kinda sad if you think about it a bit, or maybe it's just me. I felt sorry for Hoshino. But she had a smile on her face the whole time which was nice. He was a nice guy inside which is why he went along with whatever Hoshino requested despite being told that he should avoid the annoying robot. And looks like he's going to help her out even further and not run away from the overly verbose robot.

Episode 2:

Miss Jenna is finally repaired. Next week is THE week. The moment that the novel readers agree is the best part of the entire story.

The moment Gentle Jenna comes back to life, and our nameless Junker finally sees the beautiful twinkling of eternity that will never fade no matter when, that the world had forgotten.

Episode 2
This is short with only 13+ minutes including ED, but fulfilling enough to be a single episode. Better watch with sci-fi goggle though. The mood is more positive in this episode, but there are quite some flags. Good characterization in such a short time.

It contrasts the two in various ways. Yumemi is eager to show the stars, long for having dreams, and have a wish while being a robot. The scavenger is on the other hand, not really having any purpose of life and his only dreams are nightmares.

The reason why he repair the projector is clearly stated as unknown to himself. Clearly he feels sympathy towards her, but it seems there is more. Perhaps the idea of watching stars gives him something more than curiosity, as a classic case of robot providing reflection to human.(Well, I'm not sure because it's been many years since I played the VN)

Despite all those flags, the episode is being more positive by talking about all sort of things and having the projector repaired. That smile at the end is endearing.

Episode 2

So Mr. Customer ends up giving in and helps fix Ms. Jena (that sounds a bit weird lol). Despite there being no possible beneficial outcome, he is still fixing the projector for the robot. And Hoshino is still waiting for a customer or two, standing out there calling out to customers, setting up notices of the projection being cancelled due to repairs, it gets even more sad when we learn that she's got, like, 60 more hours left and she still smiles. She's a robot so we also get that "I want to do stuff humans can" thing here. And Customer-san tells her that it's not always good to dream or shed tears. Lol when she asked him how it feels to shed tears, and he's like "I don't think that far when crying". And now Ms. Jena is fixed so we'll get to see how Mr. Customer takes the view of the stars in.

The quality difference between this and Rewrite (and the other Key titles like Clannad, Angel Beats, Little Busters, Charlotte) is night and day. If I didn't play this kinetic novel a long time ago I wouldn't have known Key was able to make stuff that didn't include a high school setting with unfunny comedy, a buttmonkey sidekick and a congo line of "speshul" girls that acted half their age but what do you know.

Planetarian reminds me of more of the late 90s, early to mid 2000s type of "moe" that was in series like Chobits, Ah My Goddess and Mahoromatic rather than the late 2000s type "baby/chipmunk" rampart in light novels and modern bishojo games. It's a breath of fresh air and I'm glad what I consider the best "Key" work ever (or in my case the one of very few good Key works) is getting the adaptation it deserves.

Good 2nd episode. Good interactions between the two leads.

It's especially good to see Mr. Customer fixing Ms. Jena. It's good to see he's taking some initiative here, and be more than just reactive towards Hoshino. I also like the overall balance they're hitting with Hoshino. She's hopeful and curious and inquisitive, but she also doesn't seem dumb or excessively child-like. And it's all played very straight - I'm glad there's not a lot of hammy anime-style comedy here.

That's an amusingly backhanded way to compliment something. Well, maybe I'm giving you too much credit given the repetitiousness. I suppose the medium has set low standards though, so things are good because of things they are not, and that doesn't really lead to much good analysis.

Then again, I'm glad that the premise is radically different enough and avoids various tropes but basically this is good because it's not Key, right?

Why is each episode so short? Is this not a full series show?

It's an Original Net Animation, not to mention that the original source material itself really is that short.

About 8-9 years back a former ASuki mod (Skyfall) pretty much pleaded with me to play Planetarian. I was never big on playing games, so I told him to narrate the story.

I am so glad this story is being animated. It certainly deserves it. As critical as I've been in the past about Key's product, this one by far the best just going with the content of the story. I have enjoyed the interaction so much in the first two episodes and will be eagerly waiting for more.

Episode 3

At first time watch, tears came out of my eyes when it shows the night sky with Gental Jena as bgm. This is the moment I've been waiting for all these years.

It's been a long time so my memory might be wrong, but I think they have changed the timing of the power off, and inserted the inspection of the power switch. This is making the statement of "I got the starts in my head. When I hear your words I will know what is shown." having very different meaning. But it is still very well done and make it very worthwhile to watch the show.(and to buy the disc)

And after all the good time, the mood in the next morning is heavy. This mood setup is very good as well, make it really feel like a robot having concious mind when Yumemi said she's a bit broken.

Well now that was quite something.

The robot girl explains a lot about the stars, constellations, mankind history regarding inventions, and the fact that the planetarium is also a time machine. I also really how like how the storytelling feels so trusting told from Hoshino's point of view. The background imagery and music used also works quite well imo.

Good episode, this is getting more and more interesting every episode.
