Well I guess that explains why the marriage proposal everyone who played the VN was talking about was omitted and why they carelessly leaked Cal's death.

As much as I hate the way this series ends, the fact that I hate it means it was successful in what it was trying to accomplish. After the initial "wtf" shock I do have to admit it was pretty spectacular how they threw in a twist that almost nobody was anticipating. As others have mentioned, this has been a dark story from the beginning, and it kept true to its form.

I had some misgivings about the way Reiji died so easily from a presumably no name killer, but that just goes to show that anybody can be caught off guard and killed as easily as that. Although I can speculate whether or not Elen was killed as well, ether way, she's as good as dead. Even if she survived, she lost her only reason to live and would probably only keep living to avenge Reiji before burning out like Cal planned.

I guess CalxReiji did happen in a perverse sort of way

Hmmm...I'm definitely not going to watch this just yet. Probably not for a few days even.

The more I read about it here, the more I'm beginning to think I should just wait for the translation and skip the raw entirely, in order to come out of the show with a fully informed impression and not having to re-evaluate my opinion not just once but twice.

The wait will bother me a little and it's probably a bit late for this seemingly obvious conclusion, but hey...it's the best way to resolve this impasse in a satisfactory fashion for me.

I would like to reiterate one final time, however, that I do believe the tone of the ending is fitting. The details are another matter and could make a big difference, thus I'll simply fade away for a while.

Sorry guys. All I can say that with the way it was concluded, and after reading through the script, it was a nasty rude surprise, but an absolutely fitting ending.

For those who are mad as hell now... wait for the subs, and take a couple of deep breaths. The ending is definitely consistent with the message of the storyline (and the ending song). And if you still can't take it, pretend that the last minute doesn't exist

Phantom overall gets a strong 9/10 from me overall.

The great lose of the great beginning. I don't like this sort of ends, this is a bored. But at least it's not melodramatic, but "true noir" end.

I have truly enjoyed following Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ these last 26 weeks. It was definitely my favorite anime of 2009. However, as expected, I'm quite disappointed with how BeeTrain handled things.

BeeTrain was always known for their yuri fandom, and like I said in another post, even if they commit the most atrocious crimes, they will get away with it in the end. I'm not surprised since it's a male character this time, they decided not to. I would have expected it if I never played the game, but....damn.

They finally got their hands on one of the best VN out there and they managed to screw it all up in the end imo.

First disappointment was how they didn't show any of Cal's past with her father. That was a must scene imo. Second one and the most scene I was expecting was the marriage between Reiji and Elen. I guess that really was a hint that one of them will die in the end, or maybe both. The 3rd was Cal's death. Not just because she died, but the way it was handled, I didn't like it one bit. It was so mediocre for someone who has taken over the lead in the series and the primary focus.

As for the end, I'm still waiting for the subbed episode to comment any further.

More of a downer for me. Both of them have suffered enough, but only one gets to enjoy normal life. I don't understand why Inferno will kill one but don't finish off the other. I would like to know what McGuire said near the end. Perhaps he thinks Reiji is more of a threat than Elen.

In any case, Cal's words from Cherry Blossoms Ending rang true: "Even if I don't kill them, someone else eventually will. The life they want is unreachable anyway."
Seems that Cal, me and Beetrain were of the same thought... still tough, I am not sure I like the pah they have taken. I'll need to see the ep before makin this judgement.

Anyway, another epic troll for Elen fans from Nitro+ (VN authors), spiced up with promoting Elen. And there I thought that they overtoped themeselves with the "Gazing at the Stary Sky" ending (imagine an Elen fan playing through the whole chaptre 3 and find out that Elen's neding is replaced by an slap-in-the-face ending).
What a hell they have against that girl is beyond mine understanding.

Still hoping for the DDT OVA. Looking at how Cal was the only character in chapter 3 they tried to improve and who got a new scene for every cut out scene, I have more confidence that less people will be trolled there.

Also, for people hoping for an OVA, don't count on it. As much as I wish there was for each ending, I think they would encourage people to buy the game instead of watching the OVA's.

But Elen did betray Inferno, when she ran off with Reiji in chapter 2. She was still considered a traitor at the time for her actions in chapter 1, and even though they allowed Scythe to return, she ran off with the other traitor. Plus, in chapter 3 she ends up gunning down Scythe and some of his numbers. No reason at all for them to not consider her a traitor.

Reiji didn't even die from the wounds he got when Sycthe shoot him multiple times, I don't think he would die from that. I'll just believe Reiji is still alive after all....

Who the hell would want to buy the OVA after this? The first 3 OVA's failed. The ending for the anime failed. Honestly, they are just giving Phantom of Inferno more negative reputation.

Although I doubt this is probable, part of me wonders if Elen was acting all along. She's always been the best regarding acting and outwitting even the other Phantoms by always being one step ahead like with the countersnipe operation. I doubt it though. I guess the most probable answer to her laugh and smile is her breaking upon seeing Reiji's body. You finally get what you want, have it for literally 2 minutes, and then lose it all in a heartbeat

Well, having trained countless assassins, and the Phantom's himself, I'm sure he pretty much knows how to handle guns and how to kill a person. He shot Reiji 2 times near his heart and 2 times in the stomach, or a bit lower, I'm sure that's enough to kill a person.

The lesson that recent animes have taught me:

Overall, if they were going for an original anime ending, I would have prefered something like this...

Reiji meets Cal and have a showdown, not the stupid duel like in the anime. After some struggles, Reiji finally has the advantage and finishes Cal off, while he mourns her death.

Elen finishes off Godoh's men, then Reiji joins her and they have a showdown with the Numbers Sisters. They finally kill them, Elen finally reaches Sycthe and kills him, breaking the chains once and for all.

Elen finally remembers her past, they go to her hometown and just as they were about to start a new life, Reiji gets killed by a passing cart.

Elen mourns Reiji's death and finally the feelings of anger and hatred builds up on her, she storms Inferno's
headquarters looking for McGuire, she kills Inferno's men along the way and finally faces off against McGuire, she shoots him multiple times, and then throws him out the window, falling to his death.

Some time after, Elen discovers she's pregnant and decides to live for Reiji and the child within her. She decides that the nightmare is finally over and that she can live a normal life again.

Timeskip, 5 years later, we see a grown up Elen, visiting the graves of 2 people, Reiji Azuma and Cal Devens, she puts flowers on their graves and with her hands holding together(praying or something), then she gets up, and we see 2 children near her, praying as well. They seem to be twins, 1 boy and 1 girl. Elen grabs their hands and tells them....

"Let's go...Reiji...Cal..."

The End.

Because the rest of the series except for the ending was fantastic, so an OVA ending that replaces the last two episodes and gives it a proper ending would make the entire series fantastic? Stop being so pessimistic.
