Well, you reminded me of why I didn't watch Higurashi.
I did end up watching the last episode of "School Days", and took a look
at the game endings on youtube. This sort of thing is just... Well done,
in any case.

Yeah I ended up feeling similarly here. Just not my thing and I actually liked Higurashi as a whole. Mostly the good times in that show and less the terrifying death .

From my point of view it was pretty well written. Just not the kind of story I'd read that often. Somehow never got that into characters you like brutally killing each other. I need to go watch something cheerful now .

I need to give mad kudos to -Fate- for the work done with the Teana fic. The manga insert is far beyond any expectation. This place is crawling with people that make us mortal feel inadequate by far...

In light of this spirit of escalating expectation with fanfics, I have to get my lazy ass together and start doing drawing the only way I know how... shameless ripoff from what others have done and do it dirty using the magics of vector. Here's a Wendi in Clannoha. To be honest, I am not even sure about casting... hehe.



I am not done with this yet, but I am lazy. Therefore, here's this piss-poor excuse of a piece for people to chew me out! I have no idea what Wendi should actually be holding at any rate so suggest something I guess.

Well done! I haven't seen many fics dealing with Nanoha's patrol incident,
and it's aftermath. Hayate is a great character for helping Nanoha to deal
with her disabillities, seeing as how she spent years in a wheelchair, and then
finally convalescing and going through rehabilitation. From all that I've heard about that sort of thing, it's pretty much pure hell when there's a large amount of recovery to be done. This humble poster is in fact trying to write a fic around Nanoha's incident, but trying to focus more on earthside.

The motivation behind this story:

In StrikerS, we find out that Teana’s brother was pretty much disowned for his apparent failure before his death. This always struck me as a raw deal – the poor man fell in battle, but nobody acknowledged that were it not for him, the criminal he was chasing would probably have escaped. The criminal was eventually caught by ground forces, not the best and brightest of the lot, so it is not unreasonable to infer that the air force mage gave as good as he got and at least crippled the criminal before he got away.

Glossary]

Devil Strikers – Air mages who graduated from Nanoha’s training courses, especially those after the JS incident, were generally tougher and more closely bonded than the rest. Others call them by the unofficial name of ‘devil strikers’, reflecting the training from hell they had to survive, endure, and excel through, as well as their superb individual and team abilities. The air force rotates them through different units to share their experience and expertise. Most of them watched Vivio grow up, and as such have a soft spot in their hearts for her.

Heh, an entire generation of flight mages fondly recalling the time "Nanoha Mama" kicked their asses and straightened their spines...

HLA-RF7 – Following the success of Riot Force Six, Heavy Land Assault Riot Force Seven was founded by Hayate in order to create a force of commandos with capabilities similar to that of the Navy’s Enforcers. Like the devil strikers they are trained in a specific school, but unlike their aerial counterparts HLA-RF7 commandos are kept together after graduation in tight groups that specialize in team tactics based on their close bonding and familiarity with each other.

Heavy Land Assault... right... How many women are in Hayate's new unit? Or at least how many female officers?

I did find it interesting that in one of the last scanlated StrikerS manga chapters, that Hayate expresses her own dissatisfaction with her performance as a commander, and her intention to give up command. She's then told that you can only learn to command by commanding, and that she should make sure to learn from her mistakes.

In Holy Writ it talked about the torments of conscience. On some level, McLaren had never understood the phrase. In his innocence he had assumed that those who committed evil acts never felt the pangs of a chastizing inner voice. Now he knew differently, and it made him wonder how many others had suffered the same way, forced by circumstances to do something they otherwise found abhorrent.

But what choice did he have? His oath of loyalty, his patriotism, those were important things, but next to his wife, his son, his unborn child? He couldn't bring himself to make that choice. Indeed, he didn't know what he would think of someone who could.

That's one of the really, really, hard questions- And should the answer ever change, if and when the actual stakes at hand are known to be incredibly high?
Reminds me of the novel "Failsafe", in which a technical defect leads a single USAF bomber to continue it's run during an alert, when it doesn't receive the recall codes. To keep a war from starting, the US president orders a major US city to be bombed as well.

A midday meal provides needed energy and valuable nutrition, particularly for a man who probably isn't used to making his own breakfast and so shorted yourself there as well. Or do I wrong you there? He picked up the sandwich and took a bite, chewing deliberately while he allowed the barb to sink home.

You're a valuable if not unique talent, so I'd expect you to qualify for leniency."

Bitter much? There is no doubt that Sonoma's past was tragic. Still, wanting to spread the pain to as many people as possible makes him just as bad, if not worse, than those that are responsible for his pain. Which would interest me- have you drawn up any details as to what faction in the TSAB would use such heavy handed tactics to suppress unrest? StrikerS certainly showed us that TSAB is certainly not free of black-hearted beings, or those whose convictions lead them into darkness, but we also have the expamples of Fate and Hayate-tachi's treatment of the more benevolent (or at least pragmatic) side.

Or in plain language, why don't I just kill all of you and have done with it? Now that it was out there between them, McLaren wondered why he didn't do just that. Did Sonoma, or perhaps his associates since he kept saying 'we' and 'us' all the time, have qualms about killing innocent people? Or was it something more practical, like the fear that if McLaren was found dead or went missing that the routine investigation would reveal something else and put the police on Sonoma's track?

yeah, I figure it's the latter. Any operation pretty much lives or dies by the KISS principle. Never forget, Murphy is out there.

Whatever else it might mean, the threat had done its job: it hammered home once more just how precarious McLaren's situation was. The well-being of his family was completely in this man's power, left to the dubious mercy of a kidnapper.

It was almost too much to bear. He was a TSAB Ground Forces officer, a soldier even if his weapons were data and information control instead of magic and artillery. He was supposed to be fighting, in his way, to protect others and preserve peace across the dimensions. To fall in battle if he must, but not like this, not as nothing but a victim.

"Who are you," he groaned, "to have done this to us?"

"Poetically said," noted Sonoma as he finished off his sandwich, "but I don't think that you really want an answer to that. In fact, if I were you, I'd want to know as little as possible about all this. A shadow passing over you in the night, cast from an unknown source, and that's all you can bear witness to." He paused and chuckled. "Look at me, inspired to poetry of my own by your example. But I think you take my point. Don't think that I haven't been in your position, Captain, so I understand how it gnaws at you, but you need to take care of your own."

Well written, indeed. You've certainly made Sonoma into a well-fleshed out character- it will be interesting to see what his final fate will be- to die, or be captured? Or perhaps to even escape, to plot anew?

Lindy Harlaown had recently turned twenty-six years old. She’d first joined the ranks of the TSAB at ten years old, and had received her partner when she’d been twelve. Seeing as she’d been by his side for the past fourteen years, she liked to think she knew Alfred Crystera well.

“Al, what’s the matter?” She darted after her partner, ignoring the curious stares and murmurs that followed the pair, and grabbed him by the arm. His muscles were hard as iron beneath her hand, his eyes hot. “Al, talk to me. What happened in there? Did we get clearance to investigate?”

“No.”

The green-haired woman nearly tripped over her own feet. “How could they say no?” she demanded. “We have the evidence. The crime is linked to the place, and the place is linked to the person! Al! Tell me what happened, damn you!”

Alfred came to a halt, his back rigid and his hands clenching into fists. He blew out a long breath. “They said no,” he bit out, “because they’ve been monitoring the situation ever since the first children were taken away. My superior officers have had their hands in this from the very beginning.”

Lindy felt the bones in her legs turn to jelly. “What?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“They told me everything. Said they never intended to come clean on it, but you and I have been poking a little too deep for comfort. They gave us basic level one clearance, nothing more.”

“But… with level one clearance, we can’t investigate any of the back rooms or…”
“I know.” Alfred closed his eyes. “There’s something else, Lindy. While I was in there they… explained it to me. How it’s preferable to force Linker Cores into bodies of children instead of trying to create artificial mages. How it has a higher rate of success, provided the child has the base to support the intrusion of the Core and the way it throws the body off.”

He trailed off into silence, and Lindy didn’t ask; she didn’t need to know all the details to paint a mental image of what their superiors had approved behind their backs. She slowly ran a hand through her hair, took a leap of faith. “I sent in a request for a list of the children used in the experiment,” she said at last. “I did it before they called you in, and I got a copy of it without much hassle.”

Alfred didn’t say anything, though his shoulders stiffened marginally.

“Al…” Lindy felt her throat close up. “One of the children was Elise. Her name was near the top of the list. They’ve… they’ve had her ever since she left England.”

“On your feet, Nanoha.”

The fifteen-year-old blinked and fumbled as Elise tossed her a jacket, breezing past her with keys in hand. “O-Onee-sama?”

“Less talking, more walking. Come on.”

Confused by her guardian’s brisk tone, Nanoha hastily slid on her jacket, taking a momet to swipe furiously at her eyes before scampering after Elise. The pair had returned to the apartment in silence; it had been decided that Kuon would spend the night with Fiasse this time, as requested by Elise. The evening air was cool but not crisp enough yet to warrant a heavier coat, so it didn’t bother Nanoha too much as she followed Elise out into the garage.

The tears that had racked Nanoha’s body for nearly ten minutes after her confrontation with Fate had run dry, but she still felt the sting in her eyes and the ache in her chest. She blinked as Elise slid gracefully onto the motorcycle, sliding the key in and switching on the ignition. “Onee-sama?” she asked tentatively. “What are you doing? It’s really late, and it’s kind of cold tonight…”

“Get on.”

“Eh?”
“Get on.” Elise glanced over her shoulder at Nanoha, a flash of blue in the darkness. “Don’t make me repeat myself.”

Because Elise’s tone warned her against asking any questions, Nanoha wisely kept her mouth shut and slid onto the motorcycle, her arms instinctively circling Elise’s waist and holding on tightly. She paused for a moment, studying the blonde. That’s strange, she mused. Has Onee-sama gotten shorter…? She narrowed her eyes for a moment before recalling, with a jolt, that she hadn’t ridden behind Elise in months.

No… I’ve gotten taller, haven’t I?

“Hold on tight,” Elise called, raising her voice to be heard over the roar of the engine. “It’s going to be fast, and you haven’t ridden with me in awhile.”

Nanoha nodded, tightening her hold on Elise’s waist. The door the garage slid open, and the motorcycle shot out into the night. Nanoha yelped and clung to Elise, burying her face into the back of the older woman’s neck as she adjusted to the feeling of flying backseat of someone else, keeping her eyes wide open despite how fast they were going.

Elise hadn’t driven her motorcycle in months; she’d relinquished the vehicle to Nanoha after the teenager had gotten her license. Despite that she handled the machine like an old pro, adjusting easily to the freedom and wind as if she’d never stopped riding it. Behind her, Nanoha cautiously loosened her grip a little and pulled back just enough to tilt her head to the side, watching the stars and moon blur before her eyes.

How long had it been, she mused, since she’d let someone else lead her? How long since she’d surrendered to just feeling the wind and had allowed another’s hands to guide her down the path? Until Elise had come into her life, no one had dared to try.

“… Onee-sama?” Nanoha’s voice was soft, nearly drowned out by the wind.

“What?”

“You’ll… you’ll always be around, won’t you?”

Elise smirked, ignoring the steady heat that continued to throb in her chest.

“I’ll be around as long as you want me around, Nanoha.”

“Thanks for helping me out, Kuon.”

The fox familiar flicked her ear briefly to acknowledge Miyuki, but she didn’t glance at the dark-haired young woman. One thing she’d decided early on was that she would never interfere in the personal matters of the three women who had taken her in; it was her decision and she stuck to it through thick and thin. It was very rare for her to change her mind on the matter, and it took a great deal of conviction on her part if she decided to go through with it.

The look of absolute loss in Fiasse’s eyes as she had left her home that evening, wearing only a light jacket to ward off the growing chill, had been enough for Kuon. She hadn’t been present when her mistress had been talking with Lindy, but she was smart enough to put two and two together.

“She’s hurting.” Kuon’s voice was soft as she stepped past Miyuki’s shoulder. “I don’t know exactly what was said when she was with Lindy, but it opened some old scars. She’s in a lot of pain right now.” She glanced briefly at her mistress, who looked very small and very alone as she stood before Tiore Crystera’s grave. “I figured the only one who could help was you.”

Miyuki flashed Kuon a brief smile before stepping away from the familiar’s side, sliding her hands into the pockets of her pants and strolling calmly over to Fiasse. Transforming into her fox self in a flash of gold light, Kuon darted across the grass and scrambled into Kyouya’s arms as the man knelt to scoop her up. “Are you sure this will work?” she asked.

“If it doesn’t, I’ll take the blame for it.” Kyouya turned away and began to walk, leaving the two women to each other. “Miyuki’s had a track record of snapping Fiasse out of her moods.”

Kuon said nothing, merely settled deeper into Kyouya’s arms and closed her eyes with a tired sigh.

During the time that had passed while Kyouya and Kuon talked, Miyuki had wordlessly made her way to Fiasse’s side and stood quietly beside her now, gently letting their shoulders touch, gauging the other woman’s reaction to the physical contact. Despite the four year age difference Miyuki was the taller of the two, only a few inches taller than Fiasse.

Using her height to her advantage, Miyuki leaned down and lightly blew against Fiasse’s neck.

Fiasse yelped softly and whipped her head around, staring at Miyuki with wide, stunned eyes that weren’t completely dry; she wiped hastily at her tears and turned away again to look at her mother’s grave, blowing out a shaky breath. “You startled me,” she said.

Miyuki smirked. “Sorry.”

“No, you’re not.” Fiasse shot her girlfriend an amused look out of the corner of her eye. “You’ve always enjoyed doing that. Always breaks my train of thought.”

“Only because you like it so much.” To prove her point, Miyuki repeated the action, and this time the shiver that ran down Fiasse’s spine was born more out of pleasure than surprise. “It always makes you laugh.”

True to what she said, Fiasse couldn’t resist a soft laugh, rubbing her hands together to ward off the chill. “You’re lucky I left Sweet Song with Iria,” she scolded gently. “Otherwise he’d be having a fit.”

Miyuki shrugged good-naturedly, and Fiasse laughed again; the laughter faded from her eyes as she gazed at Tiore’s tombstone, and she swallowed quietly. “It’s strange,” she said at last. “It’s strange to know I can feel so sad, but at the same time I can feel so happy.”

Miyuki’s eyes softened slightly. “Fiasse.”

Fiasse shook her head, a quick, hard motion. “It’s your fault, you know,” she muttered. “It usually is.” Her breathing hitched slightly. “No matter what, I’m always happy when I’m with you. I can’t figure out if it’s a bad thing or not.”

Saying nothing—mainly because she had nothing to say—Miyuki stepped closer and gently slid her arms around Fiasse’s waist, hugging the songstress from behind. Her unbuttoned jacket spilled over her shoulders so it covered both of them, and she gently rested her chin on Fiasse’s shoulder, nuzzling her neck. After a few minutes, Fiasse sighed and leaned back into Miyuki, closing her eyes.

“Well?” Miyuki’s voice was soft. “Figured it out yet?”

“I’m still working on it.” Fiasse smiled slightly. “So far, it feels pretty good.”

Hayate frowned as she watched Yuuno punch in the code for the closed door before them, resisting the urge to shift from foot to foot. “Are you sure this is okay?” she asked for at least the eighteenth time since the boy had proposed the idea to her. “Shouldn’t we at least give Fate-chan some kind of warning before we just stroll in? She was really upset earlier…”

“If we wait any longer, she’ll just shut us out and put on a fake smile like she’s been doing for the past four years.” Yuuno’s eyes narrowed as the lock-pad flashed up at him, stalling for a moment. “Lindy and Chrono already gave us the go ahead to do this. I just wish Arf was here, too, but she still has to finish her patrol with Zafira and won’t be back until sunrise.”

Hayate grimaced, opened her mouth, then closed it wordlessly as the door slid open to allow them entry. She couldn’t deny Yuuno’s argument in the least, but it still made her nervous to just walk in on one of her closest friends like this. “Remember that if she’s mad at us,” the brown-haired girl muttered before she brushed past his shoulder and stepped into the room.

Having been alerted to the intrusion already, Fate sat up from her place sprawled on her bed but otherwise made no other action to either greet her friends or send them away. She blinked several times, as though to assure herself that what she saw was real as Hayate cheerfully plopped down on her left and Yuuno calmly settled on her right. “How’d you two get in here? I locked the door with a code and everything.”

“You forget.” Hayate grinned. “We all know Yuuno-kun is really planning to become a mad scientist one day.”

The light joke was enough to make Fate crack a slight smile as she glanced at Yuuno, who pointedly looked away and whistled innocently. Hayate studied the blonde for a moment before sighing. “Fate-chan,” she said, “may I be honest?”

“You usually are, anyway, so it doesn’t matter what I say.”

Yuuno smirked. Fate sighed. “Go ahead,” she relented.

For a moment Hayate said nothing at all; finally she sighed and slung her arm along Fate’s shoulder, gently pulling the red-eyed girl into a light embrace. “You look like hell,” she whispered. “You really, really do. Just thought you needed to know that.”

Fate laughed, a soft, anguished sound that sounded more like a sob. She laughed because she knew, deep down, that what Hayate said was true and she needed to believe, desperately, that she could still laugh in the face of such pain.

As the tears began to fall again and her body began to shake, Hayate bit her lip slightly and tightened her hold on Fate, tucking the other girl’s head beneath her chin. As her laughter collapsed into sobs Yuuno leaned over and hugged her gently, so she was cradled between the two of them.

Neither of them said a word. They just held her.

The three of them stayed that way for a long, long time.

A slight chill nipped at Zafira’s fur as he slowly opened his eyes, blinking slightly as his vision solidified. He had been sleeping, but it had been more akin to a nap—the whole time his senses had still been on the alert, and anything out of the ordinary would have awakened him instantly.

A quiet murmur made his ears twitch and he slowly tilted his head down slightly to look down; his eyes softened even as his lips quirked in a smirk. Arf was fast asleep, her cheek resting against his chest, one arm slung along his shoulder while her other hand covered his. Lowering his head just so, he spoke directly into her ear. “You know, if it was anyone else they’d think you were in a deep sleep and having a good dream,” he teased.

Arf’s ear flicked at the sound of his voice and she opened one eye, looking up at him. “Didn’t fool you, did it?”

“Not one bit.” He stretched slightly, grimacing a little at how sore he felt after staying in one place for the night. A part of him almost wished something had happened; it would have given him a good excuse to move around.

“Hmm, it was worth a shot.” Arf opened her other eye and yawned, pulling away from Zafira slightly to look out across the landscape. She narrowed her eyes slightly against the wind. “I wish we didn’t have to stay here all night. I’m worried about Fate.”

Zafira ran a hand through Arf’s hair in an attempt to soothe her nerves. She’d been on edge ever since they’d received the telepathic report from Lindy and Hayate about Nanoha’s return. “She’ll be fine,” he soothed. “Hayate told me she’ll stay with her, and Yuuno’s never far away from those two.”

Arf sighed and nodded, leaning back against Zafira. “I know, but I still worry.” She laughed softly. “We seem to have a lot of worries lately. I can’t wait for a chance to go at these familiars. I’d like to take my some of my frustration out on them, it might make me feel better.”

Zafira chuckled.

“Just leave some for me, okay?”

“Of course.” Tilting her head back slightly, Arf leaned up and kissed Zafira lightly on the lips.

“BLAZE!!”

The lion familiar’s paws twitched at Glory’s call, and with a low rumble he rolled onto his stomach, slowly opening his eyes. “Glory,” he rasped, and paused as he saw Fury right at her heels. “… Fury, what…?”

“You moron!” Feeling her heart ache as she surveyed the wounds covering Blaze’s shoulders, back, and haunches, Glory knelt over him, stroking his mane. “What’d you do? Did you take the blame for Fury?”

Blaze closed his eyes and sighed. “Nothing I’m not used to.”

“Idiot!” Fury’s voice was anguished. “Dammit, Blaze, we all take punishment when one of us messes up! You know that!”

“This is nothing.”

With a flash of gold Blaze reverted back to his human form and slowly sat up, grimacing as Glory slid in to support him, tugging him to his feet; without hesitation Fury went to his other side, their earlier conflict pushed aside. “They aren’t as bad as they look,” he muttered. “I’ll heal quickly. She gave us a new mission.”

“So soon? But—“

“Not an actual mission; more of a testing fight.” Blaze grimaced. “She wants us to strike tomorrow. She needs to know how powerful these TSAB mages are.”

Fury frowned. “Do you think the Crystera bitch will be there?”

“Most likely.”

“Good.” He grinned. “I need to pay her back for what she did to me.”

Listening to the voices of her familiars, the mistress closed her eyes and leaned back in her chair, nodding quietly. She had never doubted they would stay loyal to her; she had no reason to believe they would ever betray her.

Lifting a hand, she gently stroked the key that hung from a golden chain around her neck. The red stone set inside of it, the dark red color of blood, gleamed dimly in the shadows.

“Soon,” she whispered. “Very soon.”

First off, you've finally provided some solid details about just what's got Fiasse so torqued at the TSAB; generic Evil Administrative Government Bureaucrats behind it--indeed, it seems apropos that Al's "superior officers" don't even get names; they're not really people, after all, more like...symptoms of a problem called "power corrupts."

(I wonder, given everyone's ages, and the fact that more than likely the "implanted core" project blew up in everyone's faces--both through, say, Al and Lindy going off on them and the apparent side effects that Elise is now suffering through, which you highlighted in earlier chapters as well at the end of the motorcycle scene here--if this resulted in more black-budget TSAB funding being directed towards Jail and/or Precia, which in turn would mean that the actions of Lindy and Al in the past are indirectly part of how Fate came to exist?)

It's nice to start getting some answers to all the questions and mysteries posed in earlier chapters, since it appears from the Zarf scene as well as the familiar scene that it's about time for the clash of forces to begin in earnest (I like how Blaze and Fury have distinct personalities, even though they're basically bit players).

Yuuno picking the door lock was the best part of the Fate/Hayate/Yuuno scene, though Hayate recognizing Fate's "fake smile" issue was good too. That reminds me of how Fate would act with Arf in MGLN about Precia; she and Nanoha are very similar in how they both want to hold their pain inside, although they act in very different ways while doing it.

Miyuki cheering up Fiasse seemed a little abrupt; while loved ones can offer comfort without necessarily getting to the point of the problem, Fiasse seemed too happy too quickly without ever getting around to the point of why she was so upset in the first place (meaning that whatever issues had her down didn't get addressed). That's probably the weakest scene in this chapter.

Zafira recognizing that Arf wasn't asleep was one of those cute little touches and feels right. I myself can always tell the point at which my wife goes from "relaxed" to "asleep," so the comment felt "true."

I totally forgot who Iria was, though.

With the announcement of manga S4, me wanting to create a good OC and having a lot of ideas with mythological references...this is the comeback.

Profile: Sigrid It's not needed to read it as the fic will explain it, but it's more of a summary.

Knight of Exodus

Spoiler for Prologue:

Located on a planet called Cancri, the Beskanti society is, or was, a complex system containing nobles, kings and ordinary citizens. While the kings rule, the nobles do as they are told by the kings and move this information on to the citizens, and for years this system had been working flawlessly. While the nobles and kings had better standard than an ordinary citizen, there was not that much of a difference between them. The law ruled over all equally (except for the kings) and they all had a say in political matters.

The Beskanti was divided into four nations, each one operating with different rulings, but holding the same caste system as a whole. The relationships between the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Beskanti had always been bad and close to collapse, due to them being a proud warrior people that wouldn’t let another nation take control of them.

Some hundred years ago, a large spacecraft crashed on Cancri, carrying valuable technology. No one in the crew survived the crash, but Beskanti scientists immediately set forth to excavate it and began to develop upon the technology it carried.
After a few years, the whole Beskanti society entered the Space Age, as they had developed enough technology to enable space flight. After a lot of experimentation, both succeeding and failed ones, they finally develop a spacecraft capable of outer space exploration.

Not only did they develop machines capable of exploring space, they also found something called ‘Devices’, called so according to the extracted information aboard the crashed craft.
It also told them that the ship’s name was ‘Himalaya’ and had been constructed by a society called Belka.

Following this discovery, they made a goal to develop their own devices, based on this Belkan technology. The result was quite staggering and positive. A program was initiated, called ‘Knight of Beskanti’, to train promising youths together with devices and make use of some of their ‘gifts’.

However, during later years the citizens of Beskanti had shown distaste for the kings’ ruling. Taxes were raised, differences increased and it showed throughout their society that the situation was destabilizing…

Spoiler for Chapter 1 The Knight of Exodus:

Part 1

The big landing bridge hit the ground with tremendous force and made a deep cut into the ground. As soon as the gates opened, hundreds of noble families began to make their way over it, children, mothers, fathers and grandparents alike.
Guarding the landing bridge was The Thousands One. A military force consisting of highly skilled nobles, assigned to protect other nobles’ families at any cost. Baroness Clydia was part of this team, she being the leader of them all. And as the leader, she could not abandon her post at any cost.

This didn’t matter to Sigrid who, while being literally dragged by her father onboard the Joermungandr, kept screaming her mother’s name. It couldn’t possibly be heard over the rest, with everyone screaming, running and crawling onboard.

“Sigrid! You know she can’t abandon her duty!” her father screamed at her.

“But Father, she can still make it onboard! Together with us!” Sigrid retorted while continuing to resist.

“You of anyone should know what duty means to a Beskanti!”

“Yes, yes I know! It’s everything, but I don’t care.”

As she finished her sentence, a pitched war cry was heard over the hills beyond. A force consisting of Southern Beskanti soldiers and Northern Beskanti citizens rushed towards them, with swords swinging, screaming at the top of their lungs.

“Close the hangar!” was heard over the panic that ensued.

“Shit, the gate is closing! Come on Sigrid, if you stay here you’ll be crushed!”

Sigrid’s struggle began to cease, realizing the situation was out of control. Ever so slowly she let her be dragged into the mouth of the massive spacecraft. The contour of her mother against the sun showed her prepare for the oncoming force, The Thousands One easily outnumbered one to ten. Perhaps they could delay the enemy long enough to avoid the spacecraft being captured.

Sigrid spotted the rest of the people trying to get onboard. She and her father were far into the ship now, out of harm’s way for the massive metal gate that was still closing. People who had just made it there continued streaming in, the passage getting narrower. Usually, they would stop, knowing they couldn’t make it. But today, panic was overwhelming, the large mass of people pushing from behind. The people closest to the gate, but on the wrong side, tried to get back, as the gate now began to close too far.
Sigrid watched in horror as some of them got stuck between the people pushing and those already inside. Slowly the metal gate began to push them together more closely, breaking some bones in the process. The lucky ones lost an arm or leg and got at least inside of the ship, into safety.
Others were not so lucky. They were in the absolute middle, the metal beginning to push into their sides. People got cut in half, their screaming ceasing slowly as their innards got crushed into pulp.
When the gate finally closed, the screaming continued, but not from those injured. This was of the horror showing itself at the gate. Peoples’ intestines lay sprawled out over the deck, painting it red. Some extremities also lay there, without their owner in sight. By far the most disgusting though, was the half-bodies lying around, their eyes dead as rock, the other half knowingly on the other side. Their faces had a surprised look on them, which was quite a bit ironic considering their death had been so slow.

Sigrid got pulled into a hug by her father. His familiar smell and warmth came over her and she could relax just a small bit.

“Are you alright my dear?” he asked quietly.

“Yes, Father. I don’t think I’m injured anywhere, it doesn’t hurt at least.”

“Good. Now let us see if we can find a way out from this hangar. This way.”

They walked away from the main crowd, children crying and parents trying to sooth them. Some had injuries from before and was lined up against the wall. The inside of the huge ship looked more like a body collector than a savior in shiny armor.

A voice broke through the crying and wailing.

“This is Baron Theodor speaking. I have taken command of this ship together with my selected crew. Do not worry; we will bring you to safety. As we speak, The Thousands One are making their last stand just outside the gate. Thanks to their efforts we got the time to prepare the engines for flight. I cannot thank them enough and I let my thoughts go to them and their families. I salute you, The Thousands One.”

Among the mass, hands were raised into salutes. Child and old alike, everyone saluted the bravery they had witnessed. Sigrid and her father also joined in, silently crying at the same time.

“And with that, I bid them farewell. Let our gods light shine forever upon them,” the Baron finished. He held the silence for a moment before speaking again.

“Now, I cannot promise the take-off will be smooth, but it’s the best we can do. To the stars we go my fellow nobles.”

For a short moment the silence held. Then a slow humming appeared amongst the corridors, the Joermungandr’s engines starting their cycle. The large ship began to shake a little, only to increase in power the more the engines gave.

“Come on, this way,” Sigrid’s father said and yanked her into a lifepod. The pods were meant to only be used at evacuation, but they were small and cushioned inside to reduce impact. Perfect for such a violent flight.
Inside it, noises from the outside were lower, but the shaking increased. It threw them around inside the pod, but it was still bearable. Sigrid tried not to think about the poor souls still in the hangar, their already injured bodies sustaining more damage with every shake. She wanted to help her fellow nobles, but deep inside she knew she couldn’t. Not while this continued. It had to wait.

The Baron’s voice rang out again.

“The shaking is worse than anticipated, but I guess you figured that out. We are being followed by Injectors at the moment and they are shooting at us. However, our altitude is getting too high for them and they are veering off one after one. We will make it into space.”

Sigrid let out a sigh of relief while her father stroke her head absentmindedly. She was safe here, onboard the Joermungandr.

A few minutes later the shaking seized to almost nothing and Sigrid, together with her father, emerged from the lifepod. The view was not appealing. People from the hangar had been thrown around relentlessly, some even as far as into the corridors Sigrid was now standing in.
Her father sensed her need to help and let go. She rushed off in a hurry to attend to the wounded as soon as he let go, not even looking back.

Her father understood. Even when she was little she always wanted to help wounded; animal, human or enemy alike. She had a bright future in front of her.

The same could not be said about himself, as his thoughts were interrupted by a sudden pain in his gut. He looked down and saw something shiny sticking out with red color dripping from it. He touched it and felt warmth.
Suddenly the claymore that had slashed his innards pulled back, out through the decimeter wide hole in his back. He flinched at the sudden pain and started to turn around to face his demise. He didn’t make it however, and collapsed onto the cold metal floor, his blood silently forming a red pool beneath him.

At this moment someone rounded the corner to the corridor.

“Father, I forgot-“

She stopped in her tracks when she saw it. On the floor her father laid still and silent. His clothes began to soak up the blood beneath, making it change color. Above the body of the former Baron, a man with a claymore drenched in blood stood. His face was a distorted view of lunacy and happiness.

“All of you shall pay for what you have done!” he screamed out. “I am your devil, your enemy! For the glory of the citizens of Beskanti, I shall-“

[GRIPEN] a digital voice suddenly rang out, much too close for comfort.

For anyone knowing the word, stepping out of the way would be the logical choice. But the man, still blabbering about how their gods have given him gifts of power, stood his ground.
The swift and sharp blade of Forseti first hit his right leg, passing skin, hitting the bone. Then it hit again, this time in his other leg. The swift striking continued while Sigrid, her eyes fully opened in pure rage, screamed at the top of her lungs. Not the Knight of Beskanti war cry, but that of a girl who had just lost the last thing she held the closest.

It was amazing the man still stood when Forseti deactivated, the spell duration over and Sigrid empty of all the power she could muster. Blood poured out from hundreds of sword wounds, his eyes stabbed out, his mouth slashed open and his body looking like a broken umbrella. Then, finally, after Sigrid already had fallen to her knees beside her father’s body, the man began to tip backwards. He hit the floor with the sound of water hitting cement.

She could not stop crying as she turned her father over and tried to resuscitate him. Common sense told her he was already a goner, but she ignored it and continued until she couldn’t move her arms anymore. She fell forward, exhausted both mentally and physically, onto her father’s blood drenched chest. She stayed like that, wanting everything to end, while letting her tears fall freely.
The moan of others could be heard again as her senses slowly returned. The people in the corridor had not noticed the battle and went on with their pained business.
She wanted to stay where she was, but from somewhere deep inside her, she mustered the strength to stand up. Albeit a bit shaky on her legs, she stood up and saluted. Yet another noble life gone, this time the second within her own family. Now she was alone on the ship, at least deep inside her mind.

A sudden and mighty powerful lurch threw her off balance. She tried to compensate, but only made it worse. She stumbled backwards into the lifepod, tripped on the hatch and fell backwards. She hit her head hard on the control board, which caused the hatch to slam shut.
Through the fog that now clouded her mind, she heard the Baron’s voice again, distant but noticeable. Before she fell into unconsciousness, she heard him mentioning ‘out of control’ and ‘wormhole’. Then everything went black.

If someone inside the Joermungandr would be able to look at it from outside, the view would probably disturb their minds. The mighty warship of Northern Beskanti, riddled with black scorch marks and holes from the previous aggressors, approached something that would be best described as a hole into nothing. Space was warped around it, distorting the light from the stars behind, and an ever so slight humming sound reached the Joermungandr’s hull. Sound could of course not travel in space, but this was of a more advanced level. Slowly the warship began to sink into the darkness beyond. Looking from the spectacle directly beside it would show the spacecraft disappearing into empty space, cut off perfectly in a straight line.
After a few minutes, the entire five hundred meter length of the almost rectangle shaped spacecraft was swallowed, leaving Beskanti space empty of space traveling vessels.

Part 2

Orbiting in silence above the planet Mid-Childa, the dimension travelling spacecraft Claudia was performing her standard maintenance run. With the engines checked out and her navigation working correctly, as it did every time tests was run, her CO, Admiral Chrono Harlaown, leaned back in his seat with a content smile.

“Everything is fine and checks out Admiral. Do you want to initiate dimension insertion?” one of his navigators asked.

“Please do so,” he responded.

“Wait! Something is happening in our vicinity,” another navigator cried out.

Chrono straightened up in his seat. Happening? What could this possibly be, he wondered.

“What is it?”

“Admiral, an unknown object is emerging from something, ninety degrees to starboard. It’s huge!”

“Bring the cameras on,” he ordered.

Screens flicked to life and showed something rectangular shaped rushing at high speed towards them. Objects were coming of it, probably metal scraps losing their grip.

“What the hell is that thing? It’s bigger than this ship!” Chrono demanded from his subordinates.

“I think it’s a ship, Admiral, but she is heavily damaged.”

“Damaged? I don’t see anything.”

“Here, I’ll bring it into view,” the navigator said and made a few clicks on his panel.

The view that sprang forth was quite magnificent. From the front, the ship looked terrifying and menacing. From the side however, it proved how much of a wreck she really was.
Where there would usually be engines was now replaced by a perfect vertical line, cutting off all of her inner sections. She was wide open, all kinds of objects spewing out of her hangar.

“What are those things?” Chrono asked one of his analyzers.

“I can’t get a good reading…no, wait I got something. It’s…” he said and turned white.

“Yes?” Chrono asked slightly taken aback by the sudden pause.

“Admiral, all those dots we see on the overlay…its all humans. Or at least, living beings.”

“My god,” Chrono said and slumped back in his chair. “How many?”

“I’m counting about…seven hundred and fifty eight.”

Chrono drew his hand across his face and took a deep breath in an attempt to gather his sense. He succeeded, partly.

“Well, it’s too late for them. We don’t know how long they have been out there and it’s too many anyway.” He regretted saying it, but he knew they would understand. His ship was in no order to conduct a rescue operation. “How about the ship itself? Where is it heading?”

“Mid-Childa, Admiral. I’m calculating the impact will be quite close to Cranagan.”

“How close?” he asked and didn’t want to hear.

“Not too close to cause any damage, I’m relieved to say. It will crash in the ocean, a few clicks from the training grounds.”

Chrono drew a sigh of relief. “And what about the aftermath?”

“Not anything damaging. The buildings might get a rigid cleaning, but it won’t hurt it.”

“Glad to hear it,” Chrono said and allowed his breathing to slow a bit.

“However, you might want to warn them of what is coming.”

“I’m already on it, Private,” he said as he punched in the codes for high speed communications.

……………

A number of hours went past before the Joermungandr broke the atmosphere of Mid-Childa. The calculated crash area and its surroundings had been evacuated just in case and some of the people informed of what would happen had gathered on a few rooftops.
When it broke through the clouds, the spectating crowd went silent. The view was too much for them to react to.

As it wasn’t everyday a huge spacecraft fell through the sky, it was even more impressive due to the condition it was in. Fires had broken out along its hull, the dive-in into the atmosphere quite steep and the following heat setting loose parts on fire. Metal scraps continued to fall of it, getting higher speed than the mass it came from. It fell for what seemed minutes before its tip reached the water’s surface. Cascades of water got thrown into the air, putting out some of the fires that still raged about and the ground shook violently as its massive mass dug deeper and deeper into it. It was on the equivalent of a minor earthquake.
Slowly but surely its descent stopped until it couldn’t go down any further. Then, it began to tilt to one side. The analyzers aboard the Claudia had prepared for this, as its length couldn’t support the angle it had landed.
However, opposed to what was expected to happen, a metal shrieking sound was heard and the tilting stopped. After that, everything fell silent.
Now, a new object joined the horizon from the view of the city. The sun shone upon the spacecraft, reflected off the water and onto the buildings around it. The ship was no longer a ship, but a part of Mid-Childa.

………….

“Admiral, we are trying to track all of the remaining objects, but there is one standing out,” one of the analyzers said and worked quickly across his panel.

“Show me.”

A strange object popped into view, not a living being or metallic scrap. It was egg shaped with its own working thrusters trying to stabilize it, but not with much success.

“Could be an evacuation vessel,” Chrono concluded. “Any sign of life inside it?”

“The analyzer tool can’t get a lock. It’s moving too fast.”

“Even if there is nothing, I can’t let this chance slide by,” Chrono said and called up another monitor. “Captain Takamachi, take a few air mages with you and recover that object. Do not let it fall into the ocean.”

“Yes, Admiral,” the brown haired girl said and cut off.

Eyeing the monitor, he saw several dots of light approach the object, closing in fast. When they reached it they gathered around it and managed to get a hold of it. Its descent slowed a great bit, they managed to steer it off its course, until they finally landed on an empty field close to the training ground. From there a salvager and, if needed, a medical team was on stand-by.
Chrono flicked off the monitor and focused his crew on collecting more data on the pieces raining down through the Mid-Childa evening sky.

"Vivio, what are you doing?" asked Nanoha Takamachi after watching Vivio, her daughter, chew the same piece of pancake for the past three minutes.

Vivio raised her hand to silence her mother and did not answer. Nanoha sighed. She should be used to Vivio's strange habits by now...

"Morning, everyone!" came a cheery voice from behind Nanoha. Without even bothering to turn around, Nanoha said, "Morning, Fate..."

"Right back, atcha'!" answered Fate, pouring herself a cup of coffee. She grabbed her newspaper and, after seeing Nanoha giving her the 'look', she asked, "What?"

"Oh, nothing. Scored another idiot?"

"Yup and that stupid psychiatrist was out of town so it was fierce!"

Nanoha shook her head. "I bet..."

Fate was about to open the newspaper but stopped when she noticed what Vivio was doing. Fate looked at Nanoha who shrugged.

"Vivio, why are you chewing that sausage lik-"

Vivio suddenly stood up and slammed her hands on the table, glaring at Fate who, after enduring Satan's stare (AKA. Mom) all throughout her life, was not easily intimidated.

"Look what you made me do!" She yelled.

Fate blinked. "What did I do?"

"Fate, just ignore her..."

Vivio crossed her arms across her chest and sat back down.

"Mou, you made me forget my number..."

Nanoha and Fate both stared at her, not knowing what to say. After a moment of silence, Nanoha spoke.

"Um, why were you counting?"

"I read in a magazine that you must masticate 67 times before swallowing."

Fate burst into laughter while Nanoha raised an eyebrow.

"Mas...ti...cate?"

Vivio looked at her mother, smiling broadly.

"Don't worry. It's not what you think."

"What I think?"

Vivio gave a sly smile and said slowly, "You know..."

Ignoring Fate, who was now on the floor laughing even louder after that response from Vivio, Nanoha said, "Well, I know what I know but..." She stopped to look at Vivio who seemed to be enjoying herself. "But...what do you know?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Fine, what do I know?"

Vivio gave her mother a confuse look. "How should I know? I can't read minds."

Nanoha sighed and took Fate's cup of coffee who now regained her composure. Fate wiped the tears of laughter from the corner of her eyes and said hoarsly, "That was priceless. Anyway, before I forget. Guess what, Vivio? You get to bunk with your mom tonight."

"Wanna' bet?"

"It's only for one day. A friend of mine is coming over to stay and you have the only spare bedroom," said Nanoha, returning Fate's cup of coffee to her after finding out it was cold.

"But I need my privacy!"

Once again, both Nanoha and Fate stared at the 11 year-old girl who made rocks seem smart.

"Why do you need your privacy?"

"You know..."

After going over Fate's bills for the twentieth time that morning to make sure what she saw was right and paying them accordingly (how can she spend $8,000 in one week on sex and booze!?), Nanoha Takamachi yawned and stretched, happy to escape Fate's bondage of irresponsibility.

"Oh, this feels GOOD!" she said and at that moment, the doorbell rang.

She spoke too soon...

"Who could that be?" wondered Nanoha, standing up from the chair. After almost tripping over Vivio's skateboard (Fate bought it for her much to Nanoha's dismay), she arrived at the door. She said a silent prayer (She never knew what kind of piss off husband or wife would do to her if she opened the door...) and very, very slowly opened the door.

God did not answer her prayer.

"Fate! Death is here to collect our souls!"

"Hi, mom!" came Fate's voice from upstairs.

“Love you, too,” muttered Precia, rolling her eyes.

Got the name from singing in the shower. Before I started posting on FF.N, I needed a penname. I didn’t want to be xXxKawaiiShinkuxLuvUlongtime2008XxX. It was too long… and already taken. So I thought about it in my small undersea kingdom, while singing random songs of which I only know a few phrases. Then, Fate visited my shower. No, not the blond beauty who I wouldn’t mind seeing in my shower, but then again I would be hallucinating and/or high. Oh no, the Fate of DESTINY! I found that my shower resonates to the long “a” in “all.” Thus, I started rhyming the word “all.” Yes, I did sing “Mall fall balls call tall walls,” and, yes, I did giggle like a madwoman. Then, I made nonsense words like “Zall” (I’ve decided that if I ever have a child, I shall name it "Zall".).

“Quall”
“Quaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllll!”

The shower rumbled as if touched by the mighty hammer of Thor! I had a name! Thus, garbed in an infant identity and an old towel, I marched to the computer to register my name! But lo! “Quall” had only five letters and was deemed too short for approval. I quickly attached the original word of power, of resonance, of…DESTINY and emerged in triumphant glory.

But I digress, back to the task at hand.

The Set-up and Choices

“Mmm…Fate…” moaned Nanoha as the copier continued to pump out page after page sending the woman on top of it into ecstasy. Fate’s impatient lips and trembling hands pushed the woman further back against the top of the copier machine.

“Baby…yes…OW!” Nanoha winced as she pushed Fate away from her.

“What’s wrong?” the blond panted as she tried not to lose the moment.

“You pushed me against the feeder, idiot!” Nanoha grunted and rubbed her lower back.

“Here!” Fate shouted and she quickly lifted up the feeder top to expose the thick, clear yet greenish glass of the copier’s face. With a slight hesitation, she pushed Nanoha’s bare bottom onto the glass and let her slender fingers dance while the copier continued to purr in its work.

Meanwhile in another part of town…

“Oooo…these cards are really pretty,” Vivio cooed as she held up two strange-looking tarot cards.

“Only you would find them pretty, Vivio,” Vita chuckled, “They look like you drew them.”

“Humph!” the young blond frowned, “I can draw pretty too!”

“Quit picking on the kindergartner, Vita,” Signum signed as she pulled open the refrigerator door and took out a cold can of juice. She pulled the small tab and drank the contents in a few large and noisy gulps, “Ahhh, nice. So that’s where Mistress Hayate’s suka cards went.”

“Suka cards?” asked Vita.

Signum nodded while taking another deep drink of juice and tossed the can into the recycling bin, “She got them made by some street mage in Ostia as a souvenir on her last diplomatic mission.”

“What are they supposed to do?” asked Vita.

“Nothing,” Signum replied, “Of course the guy claimed that they were magic cards and would create a moment of merriment for those they were dedicated to, and of course Mistress Hayate thought of her two best friends.”

“They look like Nanoha-mama and Fate-mama,” Vivio said studying the scribbled cards.

Signum gave a slight smile at the curious six year old and stiffly patted her head, “He said that they would send happiness to them if you said a magic word.”

“What’s the magic word?” asked Vivio in wonder.

“He never said,” answered Signum.

Vivio looked at the two cards in her small hands and gazed on them intently, “Tell me the magic word, magic cards. I want mamas to be happy.”

Vita’s face matched her hair at the small girl’s intense wishing causing Signum to smirk at the pint-sized knight’s reaction, “Admit it, Vita. You think it’s adorable.”

The redhead only folded her arms in stubborn silence.

“PACTIO!” squealed Vivio suddenly with a wild smile on her face, “PACTIO!”

The two older knights jump in shock.

Back at the office…

“Hmmm…Fate, deeper…”

Low moans and deep breathing came from the small office workroom.

“Fate…please, deeper….I’m close…” Nanoha’s voice pleaded, “Baby? Why are you stopping?”

“Nanoha!” Fate’s voice suddenly became higher in panic.

“Fate?! What’s happening!?” Nanoha screamed as she saw her lover’s shape shift.

“You too!” gasped Fate.

“Huh?”

Nanoha screamed in horror as she looked down at her familiar hands only to watch helplessly as her fingers merged together and her toned arms slowly melted into a large flipper.

“Fate! Help!”

“Quack!” cried the chibi-duck-Fate who rolled on the floor.

“Oh Fate! Er…” suddenly Nanoha started to snicker.

“Why are you laughing?” pouted Fate as she curled into a blubbery ball.

“Because you’re cute!” Nanoha bounced off the copier and with a cartoonish splat landed on her newly formed chibi bottom.

Fate laughed at the sight of chibi-penguin-Nanoha, “You’re pretty cute too! Quack! Hey, why am I quacking and you aren’t?”

“Probably because Allquall has no idea what a penguin squawk sounds like.”

“That uneducated bitch!” Fate wailed while pointing her wing at the ceiling, “Does she even realize how humiliating this is?”

“Shhhh! She does!” Nanoha hushed her adorable lover with a look of terror in her eyes, “Baby, she liable to do something worse!”

“How can it get worse??”

“Nanoha, are you done with the A81304 forms yet?” whined Hayate as she lumbered into the workroom,” Oh holy hell! What the fuck is going on!?”

Nanoha slumped in defeat, “See, Fate…”

“It’s not my fault!” Fate protested as she waddled toward the chibi-penguin next to her, “Quack!”

Blood gushed from Hayate’s nose, and she tackled her friends, “YOU ARE SO CUTE!”

“QUACK! QUACK! QUACK!” shouted Fate as she tried to breathe while Hayate squeezed her.

“MOOOOO!”

Hayate and Fate turned to the embarrassed Nanoha.

“Moo?” Hayate asked the chibi-penguin while trying to stop herself from laughing, “Since when do penguins ‘moo?’”

“Quack! Probably when stupid Allquall found it hilarious.”

“Hee hee!” Hayate giggled while hugging her friends, “At least I’m safe. She likes me.”

“SHUT UP!!” yelled Nanoha and Fate as they waited for something worse to happen.

“Oh, ho ho ho,” a deep voice from somewhere in a dark corner laughed.

At the TSAB Budget debates…

“Gentlemen,” Hayate stated with authority to the room of grizzled old men, “Riot Force Six has more than paid for itself over this short term of existence. All we ask is that you keep this productive joint venture together.”

“Yagami, as much as I want to support you, I do not see evidence of allocative efficiency in your training sector,” the old general said while scratching his long beard, “It seems that unregulated overuse of the training simulator is not only fiscally irresponsible but also causing your current budget to hemorrhage.”

“Valid point, Gen. Yoder,” Hayate replied respectfully while reaching for a large folder in her briefcase, “Let me direct your attention to A81304 section twelve, sir, to answer that.”

The room became quiet except for the sound of flipping pages as the crowded room studied the large folder in their hands. Hayate turned the endless pages of black and white forms till….

She paled.

A few gasps could be heard from the back of the room, and the sounds of shock and nervous laughter soon filled the room.

Hayate prayed that she was mistaken but looked down again at where form A81304 should have been. There was no mistake. There was a blurred copy of a female’s genitals and three fingers in position. Hayate flipped to the next page and saw the same parts but in a different position. The rest of her budget request was like a erotic flipbook.

“Ahem, Yagami?” Gen. Yoder said with a bright red face, “you’ve proved my point. Budget increase denied for Riot Force Six.”

Hayate nodded in embarrassment.

“And keep control over that Lesbian Army of yours!”

“How?” Hayate whined in defeat.

Vivio suddenly became aware of the fact she was still in her sweats. Whoever had made her magically appear in a strange blue room should have at least had the decency to change her outfit. She crossed her arms across the Saint Church written on her chest. “Er... Thanks?” Vivio raised an eyebrow, the elf man watched her curiously.

He laughed, if it could be called a laugh, waving a hand in the air. “It's been a while since I've a guest of such interesting fortune.” His voice was lyrical, as if every word merely flowed off his tongue.

“Fortune?” Was he some kind of whack job physic? That's when it hit Vivio, it was all a dream. Of course it was, that made everything make more sense, she'd merely stayed up too late too many nights and now she was dreaming about very strange things.

“All people have within them a... path so to speak and yours is quite unique,” He motioned around the room, “But I apologize my manners have slipped away. I... am Igor. I'm please to welcome you. This is a please beyond time and space, beyond reason, and beyond reality itself. Only those bound by a contract may venture here.”

“Well I don't have one of those,” Vivio shrugged, “Guess I'll have to go back.” The sooner the weird dream ended the better.

“No need,” He waved his hand, a paper formed in front of Vivio, a pen just beside it. “Just sign.”

Vivio took the pen, she hesitated, it was all too real but... it was just a dream after all. She signed quickly and sloppily, “Vi-vi-o Ta-ka-ma-chi.” The second she finished the document disappeared as quickly as it had come.

“The coming year will be the turning point for you. I,” he paused possibly for drama before continuing, “Will provide you with assistance granted you stick to the contract.” Vivio didn't even read the contract so she was pretty sure that wasn't going to happen.

“Yeah yeah whatever

“... It's time for you to return to where you came. Here,” again he waved his hand and a small blue key popped into his hand which he then tossed to Vivio. “You'll know when to use that.”

Vivio flipped the key around in her hand, “What am I supposed to do wit-”

The room started to blur, the blue all ran together until there was nothing but Igor's voice echoing in her mind. “Until we meet again.”

Vivio woke up.

*skips off to school.

It's (something akin to) Swedish. Sigrid herself has an accent coming from norwegian/swedish, I have not determined that.

Seeing how Beskanti is a world unknown to the rest of Mid and even Earth, I can't "define" their languages by existing ones, but I made some sort of hybrid of what I wanted.

Why is Chrono's ship called the Arc-en-Ciel? Did you change any of the history we know of MGLN, or other than your Obviously Invented Society^TM, everything's what we know and love?

A rather big human error. I mistook Arc-en-Ciel for the Arthra and didn't know Chrono even commanded another ship.

This is my first angst I ever written so please give me some pointers if I made some errors. Anyway, the reason I wrote this instead of a humor fic was because I read Enraptured's fanfic, 'Blind', and let me tell you, it's AWESOME! (Wow...so mature of me to use that word...) It made me cry. Yeah, I'm a sucker for a good story so sue me! That story made me depressed (yet strangely...content...) but it also inspired me to write this fic. Since in Season 1 in MGLN, Fate asked if she can say Nanoha's name again (or was it Fate...oh, whatever, it happened), I decided to use it. I took a fluffy moment and turned it angsty. Perfect...

Knight of Exodus

Located on a planet called Cancri, the Beskanti society is, or was, a complex system containing nobles, kings and ordinary citizens. While the kings rule, the nobles do as they are told by the kings and move this information on to the citizens, and for years this system had been working flawlessly. While the nobles and kings had better standard than an ordinary citizen, there was not that much of a difference between them. The law ruled over all equally (except for the kings) and they all had a say in political matters.

The Beskanti was divided into four nations, each one operating with different rulings, but holding the same caste system as a whole. The relationships between the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Beskanti had always been bad and close to collapse, due to them being a proud warrior people that wouldn’t let another nation take control of them.

Some hundred years ago, a large spacecraft crashed on Cancri, carrying valuable technology. No one in the crew survived the crash, but Beskanti scientists immediately set forth to excavate it and began to develop upon the technology it carried.
After a few years, the whole Beskanti society entered the Space Age, as they had developed enough technology to enable space flight. After a lot of experimentation, both succeeding and failed ones, they finally develop a spacecraft capable of outer space exploration.

Not only did they develop machines capable of exploring space, they also found something called ‘Devices’, called so according to the extracted information aboard the crashed craft.
It also told them that the ship’s name was ‘Himalaya’ and had been constructed by a society called Belka.

Following this discovery, they made a goal to develop their own devices, based on this Belkan technology. The result was quite staggering and positive. A program was initiated, called ‘Knight of Beskanti’, to train promising youths together with devices and make use of some of their ‘gifts’.

However, during later years the citizens of Beskanti had shown distaste for the kings’ ruling. Taxes were raised, differences increased and it showed throughout their society that the situation was destabilizing…

Spoiler for Arc 1 - Under The Sign Of The Sword:

Part 1

The big landing bridge hit the ground with tremendous force and made a deep cut into the ground. As soon as the gates opened, hundreds of noble families began to make their way over it, children, mothers, fathers and grandparents alike.
Guarding the landing bridge was The Thousands One. A military force consisting of highly skilled nobles, assigned to protect other nobles’ families at any cost. Baroness Clydia was part of this team, she being the leader of them all. And as the leader, she could not abandon her post at any cost.

This didn’t matter to Sigrid who, while being literally dragged by her father onboard the Joermungandr, kept screaming her mother’s name. It couldn’t possibly be heard over the rest, with everyone screaming, running and crawling onboard.

“Sigrid! You know she can’t abandon her duty!” her father screamed at her.

“But Father, she can still make it onboard! Together with us!” Sigrid retorted while continuing to resist.

“You of anyone should know what duty means to a Beskanti!”

“Yes, yes I know! It’s everything, but I don’t care.”

As she finished her sentence, a pitched war cry was heard over the hills beyond. A force consisting of Southern Beskanti soldiers and Northern Beskanti citizens rushed towards them, with swords swinging, screaming at the top of their lungs.

“Close the hangar!” was heard over the panic that ensued.

“Shit, the gate is closing! Come on Sigrid, if you stay here you’ll be crushed!”

Sigrid’s struggle began to cease, realizing the situation was out of control. Ever so slowly she let her be dragged into the mouth of the massive spacecraft. The contour of her mother against the sun showed her prepare for the oncoming force, The Thousands One easily outnumbered one to ten. Perhaps they could delay the enemy long enough to avoid the spacecraft being captured.

Sigrid spotted the rest of the people trying to get onboard. She and her father were far into the ship now, out of harm’s way for the massive metal gate that was still closing. People who had just made it there continued streaming in, the passage getting narrower. Usually, they would stop, knowing they couldn’t make it. But today, panic was overwhelming, the large mass of people pushing from behind. The people closest to the gate, but on the wrong side, tried to get back, as the gate now began to close too far.
Sigrid watched in horror as some of them got stuck between the people pushing and those already inside. Slowly the metal gate began to push them together more closely, breaking some bones in the process. The lucky ones lost an arm or leg and got at least inside of the ship, into safety.
Others were not so lucky. They were in the absolute middle, the metal beginning to push into their sides. People got cut in half, their screaming ceasing slowly as their innards got crushed into pulp.
When the gate finally closed, the screaming continued, but not from those injured. This was of the horror showing itself at the gate. Peoples’ intestines lay sprawled out over the deck, painting it red. Some extremities also lay there, without their owner in sight. By far the most disgusting though, was the half-bodies lying around, their eyes dead as rock, the other half knowingly on the other side. Their faces had a surprised look on them, which was quite a bit ironic considering their death had been so slow.

Sigrid got pulled into a hug by her father. His familiar smell and warmth came over her and she could relax just a small bit.

“Are you alright my dear?” he asked quietly.

“Yes, Father. I don’t think I’m injured anywhere, it doesn’t hurt at least.”

“Good. Now let us see if we can find a way out from this hangar. This way.”

They walked away from the main crowd, children crying and parents trying to sooth them. Some had injuries from before and was lined up against the wall. The inside of the huge ship looked more like a body collector than a savior in shiny armor.

A voice broke through the crying and wailing.

“This is Baron Theodor speaking. I have taken command of this ship together with my selected crew. Do not worry; we will bring you to safety. As we speak, The Thousands One are making their last stand just outside the gate. Thanks to their efforts we got the time to prepare the engines for flight. I cannot thank them enough and I let my thoughts go to them and their families. I salute you, The Thousands One.”

Among the mass, hands were raised into salutes. Child and old alike, everyone saluted the bravery they had witnessed. Sigrid and her father also joined in, silently crying at the same time.

“And with that, I bid them farewell. Let our gods light shine forever upon them,” the Baron finished. He held the silence for a moment before speaking again.

“Now, I cannot promise the take-off will be smooth, but it’s the best we can do. To the stars we go my fellow nobles.”

For a short moment the silence held. Then a slow humming appeared amongst the corridors, the Joermungandr’s engines starting their cycle. The large ship began to shake a little, only to increase in power the more the engines gave.

“Come on, this way,” Sigrid’s father said and yanked her into a lifepod. The pods were meant to only be used at evacuation, but they were small and cushioned inside to reduce impact. Perfect for such a violent flight.
Inside it, noises from the outside were lower, but the shaking increased. It threw them around inside the pod, but it was still bearable. Sigrid tried not to think about the poor souls still in the hangar, their already injured bodies sustaining more damage with every shake. She wanted to help her fellow nobles, but deep inside she knew she couldn’t. Not while this continued. It had to wait.

The Baron’s voice rang out again.

“The shaking is worse than anticipated, but I guess you figured that out. We are being followed by Injectors at the moment and they are shooting at us. However, our altitude is getting too high for them and they are veering off one after one. We will make it into space.”

Sigrid let out a sigh of relief while her father stroke her head absentmindedly. She was safe here, onboard the Joermungandr.

A few minutes later the shaking seized to almost nothing and Sigrid, together with her father, emerged from the lifepod. The view was not appealing. People from the hangar had been thrown around relentlessly, some even as far as into the corridors Sigrid was now standing in.
Her father sensed her need to help and let go. She rushed off in a hurry to attend to the wounded as soon as he let go, not even looking back.

Her father understood. Even when she was little she always wanted to help wounded; animal, human or enemy alike. She had a bright future in front of her.

The same could not be said about himself, as his thoughts were interrupted by a sudden pain in his gut. He looked down and saw something shiny sticking out with red color dripping from it. He touched it and felt warmth.
Suddenly the claymore that had slashed his innards pulled back, out through the decimeter wide hole in his back. He flinched at the sudden pain and started to turn around to face his demise. He didn’t make it however, and collapsed onto the cold metal floor, his blood silently forming a red pool beneath him.

At this moment someone rounded the corner to the corridor.

“Father, I forgot-“

She stopped in her tracks when she saw it. On the floor her father laid still and silent. His clothes began to soak up the blood beneath, making it change color. Above the body of the former Baron, a man with a claymore drenched in blood stood. His face was a distorted view of lunacy and happiness.

“All of you shall pay for what you have done!” he screamed out. “I am your devil, your enemy! For the glory of the citizens of Beskanti, I shall-“

[GRIPEN] a digital voice suddenly rang out, much too close for comfort.

For anyone knowing the word, stepping out of the way would be the logical choice. But the man, still blabbering about how their gods have given him gifts of power, stood his ground.
The swift and sharp blade of Forseti first hit his right leg, passing skin, hitting the bone. Then it hit again, this time in his other leg. The swift striking continued while Sigrid, her eyes fully opened in pure rage, screamed at the top of her lungs. Not the Knight of Beskanti war cry, but that of a girl who had just lost the last thing she held the closest.

It was amazing the man still stood when Forseti deactivated, the spell duration over and Sigrid empty of all the power she could muster. Blood poured out from hundreds of sword wounds, his eyes stabbed out, his mouth slashed open and his body looking like a broken umbrella. Then, finally, after Sigrid already had fallen to her knees beside her father’s body, the man began to tip backwards. He hit the floor with the sound of water hitting cement.

She could not stop crying as she turned her father over and tried to resuscitate him. Common sense told her he was already a goner, but she ignored it and continued until she couldn’t move her arms anymore. She fell forward, exhausted both mentally and physically, onto her father’s blood drenched chest. She stayed like that, wanting everything to end, while letting her tears fall freely.
The moan of others could be heard again as her senses slowly returned. The people in the corridor had not noticed the battle and went on with their pained business.
She wanted to stay where she was, but from somewhere deep inside her, she mustered the strength to stand up. Albeit a bit shaky on her legs, she stood up and saluted. Yet another noble life gone, this time the second within her own family. Now she was alone on the ship, at least deep inside her mind.

A sudden and mighty powerful lurch threw her off balance. She tried to compensate, but only made it worse. She stumbled backwards into the lifepod, tripped on the hatch and fell backwards. She hit her head hard on the control board, which caused the hatch to slam shut.
Through the fog that now clouded her mind, she heard the Baron’s voice again, distant but noticeable. Before she fell into unconsciousness, she heard him mentioning ‘out of control’ and ‘wormhole’. Then everything went black.

If someone inside the Joermungandr would be able to look at it from outside, the view would probably disturb their minds. The mighty warship of Northern Beskanti, riddled with black scorch marks and holes from the previous aggressors, approached something that would be best described as a hole into nothing. Space was warped around it, distorting the light from the stars behind, and an ever so slight humming sound reached the Joermungandr’s hull. Sound could of course not travel in space, but this was of a more advanced level. Slowly the warship began to sink into the darkness beyond. Looking from the spectacle directly beside it would show the spacecraft disappearing into empty space, cut off perfectly in a straight line.
After a few minutes, the entire five hundred meter length of the almost rectangle shaped spacecraft was swallowed, leaving Beskanti space empty of space traveling vessels.

Part 2

Orbiting in silence above the planet Mid-Childa, the dimension travelling spacecraft Claudia was performing her standard maintenance run. With the engines checked out and her navigation working correctly, as it did every time tests was run, her CO, Admiral Chrono Harlaown, leaned back in his seat with a content smile.

“Everything is fine and checks out Admiral. Do you want to initiate dimension insertion?” one of his navigators asked.

“Please do so,” he responded.

“Wait! Something is happening in our vicinity,” another navigator cried out.

Chrono straightened up in his seat. Happening? What could this possibly be, he wondered.

“What is it?”

“Admiral, an unknown object is emerging from something, ninety degrees to starboard. It’s huge!”

“Bring the cameras on,” he ordered.

Screens flicked to life and showed something rectangular shaped rushing at high speed towards them. Objects were coming of it, probably metal scraps losing their grip.

“What the hell is that thing? It’s bigger than this ship!” Chrono demanded from his subordinates.

“I think it’s a ship, Admiral, but she is heavily damaged.”

“Damaged? I don’t see anything.”

“Here, I’ll bring it into view,” the navigator said and made a few clicks on his panel.

The view that sprang forth was quite magnificent. From the front, the ship looked terrifying and menacing. From the side however, it proved how much of a wreck she really was.
Where there would usually be engines was now replaced by a perfect vertical line, cutting off all of her inner sections. She was wide open, all kinds of objects spewing out of her hangar.

“What are those things?” Chrono asked one of his analyzers.

“I can’t get a good reading…no, wait I got something. It’s…” he said and turned white.

“Yes?” Chrono asked slightly taken aback by the sudden pause.

“Admiral, all those dots we see on the overlay…its all humans. Or at least, living beings.”

“My god,” Chrono said and slumped back in his chair. “How many?”

“I’m counting about…seven hundred and fifty eight.”

Chrono drew his hand across his face and took a deep breath in an attempt to gather his sense. He succeeded, partly.

“Well, it’s too late for them. We don’t know how long they have been out there and it’s too many anyway.” He regretted saying it, but he knew they would understand. His ship was in no order to conduct a rescue operation. “How about the ship itself? Where is it heading?”

“Mid-Childa, Admiral. I’m calculating the impact will be quite close to Cranagan.”

“How close?” he asked and didn’t want to hear.

“Not too close to cause any damage, I’m relieved to say. It will crash in the ocean, a few clicks from the training grounds.”

Chrono drew a sigh of relief. “And what about the aftermath?”

“Not anything damaging. The buildings might get a rigid cleaning, but it won’t hurt it.”

“Glad to hear it,” Chrono said and allowed his breathing to slow a bit.

“However, you might want to warn them of what is coming.”

“I’m already on it, Private,” he said as he punched in the codes for high speed communications.

A number of hours went past before the Joermungandr broke the atmosphere of Mid-Childa. The calculated crash area and its surroundings had been evacuated just in case and some of the people informed of what would happen had gathered on a few rooftops.
When it broke through the clouds, the spectating crowd went silent. The view was too much for them to react to.

As it wasn’t everyday a huge spacecraft fell through the sky, it was even more impressive due to the condition it was in. Fires had broken out along its hull, the dive-in into the atmosphere quite steep and the following heat setting loose parts on fire. Metal scraps continued to fall of it, getting higher speed than the mass it came from. It fell for what seemed minutes before its tip reached the water’s surface. Cascades of water got thrown into the air, putting out some of the fires that still raged about and the ground shook violently as its massive mass dug deeper and deeper into it. It was on the equivalent of a minor earthquake.
Slowly but surely its descent stopped until it couldn’t go down any further. Then, it began to tilt to one side. The analyzers aboard the Claudia had prepared for this, as its length couldn’t support the angle it had landed.
However, opposed to what was expected to happen, a metal shrieking sound was heard and the tilting stopped. After that, everything fell silent.
Now, a new object joined the horizon from the view of the city. The sun shone upon the spacecraft, reflected off the water and onto the buildings around it. The ship was no longer a ship, but a part of Mid-Childa.

“Admiral, we are trying to track all of the remaining objects, but there is one standing out,” one of the analyzers said and worked quickly across his panel.

“Show me.”

A strange object popped into view, not a living being or metallic scrap. It was egg shaped with its own working thrusters trying to stabilize it, but not with much success.

“Could be an evacuation vessel,” Chrono concluded. “Any sign of life inside it?”

“The analyzer tool can’t get a lock. It’s moving too fast.”

“Even if there is nothing, I can’t let this chance slide by,” Chrono said and called up another monitor. “Captain Takamachi, take a few air mages with you and recover that object. Do not let it fall into the ocean.”

“Yes, Admiral,” the brown haired girl said and cut off.

Eyeing the monitor, he saw several dots of light approach the object, closing in fast. When they reached it they gathered around it and managed to get a hold of it. Its descent slowed a great bit, they managed to steer it off its course, until they finally landed on an empty field close to the training ground. From there a salvager and, if needed, a medical team was on stand-by.
Chrono flicked off the monitor and focused his crew on collecting more data on the pieces raining down through the Mid-Childa evening sky.

This is getting pretty intense! I really wish that 7arcs could do something like this.
We need more information about Mid-Childa's past.

This is my first angst I ever written so please give me some pointers if I made some errors. Anyway, the reason I wrote this instead of a humor fic was because I read Enraptured's fanfic, 'Blind', and let me tell you, it's AWESOME! (Wow...so mature of me to use that word...) It made me cry. Yeah, I'm a sucker for a good story so sue me! That story made me depressed (yet strangely...content...) but it also inspired me to write this fic. Since in Season 1 in MGLN, Fate asked if she can say Nanoha's name again (or was it Fate...oh, whatever, it happened), I decided to use it. I took a fluffy moment and turned it angsty. Perfect...

Looks fine to me, but it's a bit short and I feel like I have read this same scene a pair of times before.

Ack, gotta work on that landing. Anyways, sorry, but this is pretty much a repost of my prospectus from over in the Relationships thread...which is presently going through another floog storm, so I figured I'd try to shop it here.

Here's the idea:

Laguna and Vice, 'cause I honestly wanna hear some theories about those two. Best of my knowledge, there was nothing about Vice's parents or family mentioned at all in the show. Shoot, Laguna practically came out of left field, so there is a lot you could do with the two characters leading up to the Sniping Incident.

For starters, I don't think there's any concrete info on Vice's background, so it wouldn't be stretch at all to make him a "bad boy" from birth (the voice actor helps). Being an orphan only spurned this further, and seeing how he'd never be able to quite fit in as a model citizen (getting told this by a pissed off, zealous preacher didn't help either -- hence "Vice"), he figured being a hotshot in the Bureau was a good way as any to get out of the slums and make a name for himself. Getting into the sniping program only helped to enhance his image per say.

Now, years down the line later, here comes the kicker, which brings us into Jousei / Clannad territory, that is the single bachelor raising up a kid by himself: Laguna enters the picture.

I guess, it's assumed she's blood related, but it doesn't hurt either, if she isn't. She could have been some waif in some failed state, a warzone, or just out in the streets, with her own circumstances, picked up by his folks as a surrogate daughter. But can you imagine what this little tornado is going to do to Bad Boy Vice? In fact, the fact she exists at all is a hint that his folks were still alive up to a point (or could still be). I'll leave it to you all to extrapolate.

Bottom line, there is a lot of fun and drama to be had here. Is he going to do the right thing and clean up his image into something of a sorta role model? Or is he going to need a kick to the pants before he gets his priorities straight? Plus, there is Laguna's side of the story too.

Thus, it makes the inevitable tragedy all the more dramatic.

As far as resolution goes, well, you could take the easy way out and go by cannon, which somehow the situation was resolved offscreen, I believe. On the other hand, there is potential to turn this into some pretty GAR / RAG / Metal Gear Solid / Tista / Black Lagoon messed up, epic stuff.

That's pretty much my pitch. Let's see what you all got or what is cannon for that matter.

Since I'd already written some crack this morning, I'm posting it instead of responding to Shiny's challenge. At least it has Zaffy...

This was inspired by the fact that my wife and I did some heavy spring cleaning in our apartment this past weekend. Well, mostly her, honestly, but to be fair it was almost entirely her stuff being sorted, moved, repacked, and put away. I was...the mule.

"What I don't understand is, how does a three-person family, one of whom spends three-fourths of the year away from home and another who's a seven-year old child, accumulate all this stuff?"

"Nyahaha...eh...er..."

"Nanoha-mama is a pack rat with Maximum Power, Aunt Hayate!" Vivio piped up excitedly.

"Yes, that I believe," Hayate said, staring at the small mountain of boxes that filled the Takamachi attic.

"Why didn't you warn us about this, Yuuno?" Chrono said. Yuuno just grinned back and let Chrono's wife answer for him.

"Because he's bright enough to know you'd weasel out of it if you knew how big the job was, dear," Amy pointed out.

"Yeah, true. And trust ferret-boy to know all about weaseling."

"I'm just amazed it didn't all get blown up or something, being around Nanoha this long," Vita joked.

"It's one of Fate-mama's rules: no shooting magic in the house," Vivio contributed, then pouted. "She can be kinda strict sometimes."

Nanoha looked oddly at her daughter, the back at Hayate.

"Are you sure that Scaglietti didn't use any of your DNA when he made her, Hayate-chan?"

Shamal giggled.

"That timing does seem kind of familiar."

"Can we get started here? The game is on tonight and I've got fifty riding on the Corsairs."

Amy cuffed Chrono on the back of the head, but his point was well-taken.

"Okay, so we need to go through all this stuff, repack what's going to be kept, sort out what's going to be donated to charity, and throw out the trash," Nanoha instructed. "Let's get to work."

"Yay!" cheered Vivio, while everyone else let out a rousing groan.

"Actually, Vivio, why don't you go off and play? We're going to be doing a lot of heavy lifting and I don't want you to get hurt up here."

"Aw, but mama--"


"No buts." Vivio knew that tone and fell silent. "Zafira-san, would you mind looking after her?"

"I'd be glad to," he replied. It was only after he'd taken the girl back downstairs that it dawned on anyone else that "babysitting" meant "no heavy lifting."

"Chrono, don't you think blue would be a nice color for a new fireplace rug?"

"No way, bridge bunny," Vita snapped. "Zafira is a Wolkenritter and that means he's going to be our rug."

Yuuno adjusted his glasses.

"Offhand," he suggested, "I think Zafira will receive his own punishment."

"Ehhhhh?" everyone chorused.

"Okay, Zaffy, since I can't help with Nanoha-mama's spring cleaning, I can at least do my own!" Vivio announced, then dumped out a box of kid-model makeup accessories onto the sofa. "Paw?"

"Because I can't choose which nail polishes to keep unless I see what they look like on someone's toenails! And these sparkling butterflies are cute, but I'm not sure they really look good on nails, and..."
