My dad's late best friend died in a matter of two weeks after taking it up again after quitting for decades. Quite a scary tale ! It's still not enough to scare me into complete quit (in fact, it had a relatively opposite effect) Granted, I'm much, MUCH better these days. Back in the day you'd be dumbfounded as to why I still haven't died out of my past smoking frequency.

Inversely, Indonesia is a country where cigarettes are candy cheap. A dollar a pack in average. You can even simply buy them in singulars in street vendors. Very conducive to create wide spread smoking culture where the lower income stratum predominates. That, and kretek. Thus we're the world's Smoking Capital.
Check your non-smoker privilege

I hate seeing youngster smoke ( elementary and high school ages). They smoke out of ignorance and just to show off (as if it works).
Obviously you don't get skin, bone, and cervical cancer by smoking. Smoking happens to increase your chances to have cancer like lung and laryngeal cancer. It can also cause brain damage (makes you dumb in the long process) due to stroke and hypertension as well as heart diseases ( infarctions etc). It also affect pregnancy causing birth defects leading to abortion, preterm labor, retarded infants and missing organs and limbs at birth. Summing it up, it has more risks and than benefits. If you're willing to sacrifice your life, your sexual performance in bed and wants to have a retarded, mutant descendants, then do it. |

People develop cancer mainly for reasons other than smoking. Smoking itself is more dangerous for other health conditions related to respiratory and circulatory systems, that scare less the general populace but are much more prevalent.
As for second hand smoking, consider what you people are breathing, drinking and eating that is way more dangerous to your health, that equally unnecessary, like factory waste, private vehicle exhaust gases, and so on. |

You don't "get" cancer from something. It's not a virus or bacterial infection. Cancer is a cell mutation triggered when the body takes damage and attempts to repair itself. The more frequently this occurs, the greater the chance one or more of your cells will "go bad" and replicate out of control. This creates clumps of cells known as tumors or "growths" that can damage the body and cause the immune system to go haywire, which invites further complications.
Cancer shares a lot of parallels with how the aging process works. Also: Quote:
I enjoyed the habit of smoking, but there's no sense spending precious money on killing yourself. Quit.

Not to mention the social health benefit a lot of people are getting over here (about 2.6 million of them) paid for by taxes collected solely from tobacco ... for gods sake, think about those people!

^ So I should thank them for my health benefits? Well, if one is under such benefits. Think of the others who doesn't share the benefits but got affected due to second hand smoke.
If possible, taxes from tabacco should go to patients who got conditions not due to smoking. Sick smokers related to smoking should never enjoy such benefits. It's to make learn a lesson and to discourage potential users knowing the government insurances with not cover such cases cause by smoking. |

What many medical stats ignore is the percentage of smokers (active and passive), that don't get develop cancer. Also let's not forget that a statistical correlation is not implying causality. In other words, statistics should not replace medicine and definitely not justify vengeful policies against minorities.
To be clear, smoking is a harmful habit, as are drinking alcohol, cola, etc, as is most of our contemporary diet and so on. Maybe some of them are more harmful to some than others. |
