I don't know about Itsuki as Toto. Talking animal familiars for magical girls (which, if Wizard of Oz was transliterated into Japanese, is what Toto would effectively be) are always played as dirty old men. Better for them to be in place to conveniently appear between the camera and their mistress's naked body for the fanservice scenes. Maybe if Kyon was Dorothy...
*shudders*

I actually think the roles of Kyon and Koizumi needs to be switched. Koizumi is definitely the scarecrow and Kyon is the dog (I actually referenced this crossover in my fic). Mikuru (big) this the good witch, Tsuruya is the wicked witch, and Taniguchi anf Kunikida are flying ape men.

And Koizumi would make a rather suave Scarecrow. An alternate possibility, though... Kyon as the Wizard (unreliable narrator, only one who "Dorothy" truly respects the opinion of, hides behind a pretentious facade at times ), and replacing Toto with Shamisen, might be good too.

I can see Tsuruya as the wicked witch. Though she'd be pretty happy most of the time. I can also see her break character in the final scenes as the cowardly lion tries to act...and then later bust out laughing uncontrollably after being splashed with water. "Psst, you're suppose to be melting"

I'd personally go with:
Kyon - Dorothy Shamisen - Toto Koizumi - Scarecrow Nagato - Tin Woodman Asahina-san - Cowardly Lion Haruhi - the Wizard of Oz Taniguchi+Kunikida+CCP - Flying Monkeys/Munchkins/Citizens of Oz/extras I like the suggestions of Tsuruya-san as the Wicked Witch (just for the lulz), and Asahina-san (big) as Glinda. I'm a little iffy as to whether Kyon's and Haruhi's roles should be switched -- remember, the Wizard of Oz wasn't actually a wizard and had no particular powers, outside of being something of a con-artist who was handy with smoke and mirrors (literally and metaphorically). Kyon could fill this role pretty well, being both normal and the Brigade's go-to man for decidedly un-speshul solutions to problems. Haruhi as Dorothy is a little less fitting, mostly because Dorothy wanted desperately to get back to Kansas -- "normalcy" -- while Haruhi proclaims that she wants anything but normal. "Following the Yellow Brick Road" would probably get derailed pretty quickly with her in the lead. |

Of the core five, Haruhi is easily the most transparent character. That's not to say that she doesn't have depth as a character - she most certainly does in my view - but it is to say that you don't have to sift through pretension or unreliable narrating or a reserved demeanor when it comes to evaluating her character. Haruhi is typically very open with her personality and feelings. She's a very honest character, really.
That makes her a lot easier to understand, and hence... to run out of points of discussion over her, really. The outstanding debates, as I see them, are... 1) Haruhi is a tsundere vs. Haruhi is not a tsundere (this is my position personally). 2) How strong are Haruhi's feelings for Kyon? (there's no question that she has a major attachment to him, but there's probably some room for debate here) 3) Is Haruhi completely out of control and heartless, or does she have a softer side that would make a relationship with her manageable (this is my position)? All three have been debated a fair bit already on this thread, with out many (if any) opinions changing, so...
