Emotion arousing anime recommendations.
Hello~ I've recently been having trouble finding a decent anime since 90% of google links seem to be opinions of mainstream newbies. I'm looking for anime that envokes emotions and/or anime that may not have a well developed plot, but still happens to arouse emotions, or atleast some good anime series. Like Clannad,Toradora, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, School Days, Higurashi no Naku koro ni, Great Teacher Onizuka, Cenceroll, Welcome to the N.H.K, Toki no Kakeru Shoujo, Summer Wars, Grave of the Fireflies, Durarara, Angel Beats, Bokurano ( manga ), Saikano, and ect.
Please, when giving your list, try not to list any mainstream anime like DBZ,BLEACH,ONE PIECE, ELFEN LIED, COWBOY BEBOP, ASTROBOY,GUNDAM, DRAGON BALL, CODE GEASS, DARKER THAN BLACK, ERGO PROXY, CASE CLOSED, RANMA, RAOURNI KENSHIN ( YES I SPELLED IT WRONG ), OR ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN TURNED INTO A DUB, UNLESSS IT IS GOOD. Please try to list more original things like Hayate no Gotoku, Sankrea, Dennou Coil. Also please think whether what you listed or not would really appeal to others. Im an all around kind of person, but please list good anime... preferably heartwarming anime. When listing, if possible, try to put a short description and tell me why you liked it please. Note: Yes ive read other similar threads, if possible please let me keep this thread. More examples of good anime: Higashi no Eden, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, School Rumble, berserk ( manga ) ect...

Simply dubs are inferior to subs.
1. Many anime have content that reflect Japanese culture, dubs cannot copy that 2. Im sure many people know majority of dubs are just horribly voice acted, the remaining that are decent are still inferior, Japanese voice actors are more experienced and convey emotion properly. 3. Like i said, japanese voice actors aot of the time truly put their heart into the acting, like clannad and toradora. Dubs also cannot input honorifics in many cases. And honorifics have great meaning in anime. English dub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wLF3eDH7y8 watch starting at 21:35 Japanese Subbed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qbCQ...eature=related start at 10:35 Look at the beauty of Tomoya's voice acting compared to the dub, pretty obvious. The original voice acting is better. 4. Quality: Many times meanings can be distorted by lenth of speech, japanese culture, conveyance of idea, and the very sound of the words each language is trying to say. Also audio is sometimes changed, including added or removed content. Examples: Digimon: our war game, compare the audio during the fight of the enemy of the dubs and subs, the audio is changed, both music and sounds like explosions and stomps. Code Geass: Panting was added during cornelia's final hour, personally i like the real story. I hate watching altered content ( me being nitpicky ). And watch Angel beats when it becomes english dubbed, I can garantee the ending of both the sub and english dub will be very different in terms of experience. 5. This reason is for manga: Official translated volumes in alot of cases are also the same. Altered Drawings, changed meaning altogether, in this case is worse than anime being dubbed, and even removed pages sometimes. Examples: Cross game, during a part where one of the characters throwing speed was measured in MPH on a machine, the official dub changed the drawing to fit the american system. in full metal alchemist, they censored winries body a bit more when she was about to take off her shirt in front of Ed, Tenjou Tenge: removed some pages that bordered on pornagraphy. -------------------- Experience: All the other reasons altogether cause a significant different in experience. Rather than making this a battle between subs and dubs ( When subs are obviously better, cant be argued.) contribute to the thread In short, English dubs cannot properly convey meaning, and are incompetent. Another example: Dub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5DG3LzqfW4 Sub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s057eriPEI8&fmt=18 Now this example is unargueable. Truely. I have to give the american dub some credit, he tries. However look at the true beauty of the sub, his voice acting is god. BTW its the boys speech im talking about. ( btw doesnt make a difference that the sub is from the movie, I couldnt find a link on youtube of simon's speech subbed from the anime. however the movie is basically the same as the anime, as you can see the speech is the same, and i dont think the movies have been dubbed yet ) ---------------- Quote:

If you have and found that that it doesn't evoke any emotion in you, great, and by all means ignore me then. But it SOUNDS like you're just ruling it out because some American company happened to dub it, which is ridiculous.

If you want emotion-arousing anime, then watch these anime!
AnoHana The Dog of Flanders (1997 anime movie. PM me to know where to watch it) A Little Princess Sara Les Miserables: Shoujo Cosette (DO NOT be fooled by it's somewhat cutesy artwork. It's MUCH MUCH better than most people perceive it to be!) Wandering Son Toward The Terra Kino's Journey |

Shows that encourage emotional attachments to their characters:
Kurenai Seirei no Moribito Kemono no Sou-ja Erin Natsume Yuujinchou Saiunkoku Monogatari - tough finding this at a reasonable price now that Funimation is no longer distributing it for Geneon Hikaru no Go Shion no Ou Hataraki Man - search Google for this; you'll find it Bartender is episodic but most episodes pack a solid emotional punch.

Hayate no Gotoku... original??? It's pretty mainstream, plus it's Ranma 1/2 with Ojous instead of martial arts... not that Hayate isn't good, I enjoyed it and think it's well done, but I wouldn't call it original or non-mainstream.
Elfin Lied... mainstream??? That's just crazy. (And I didn't care for Elfin Lied, but it's hardly mainstream. Unless murdering cuties is considered mainstream and someone forgot to tell me.) Also... if you don't like dubs... just turn off the dub and watch it subbed. The fact that a show is dubbed doesn't mean you have to watch it dubbed. For example, I can't stand the Ranma dub, so I watch it subbed. All dubbed DVDs nowadays still have the Japanese soundtrack with subs available on the DVD. I mean, I tend to prefer the subs myself, but I've never thought to refuse to watch something subbed just because someone dubbed it. Not sure I understand your criteria, but I'll do my best to give some emotion arousing anime: Cross Game - first episode definitely pulls at the heart strings. No dub. Honey and Clover - very emotionally powerful, I think rather unique. Don't know about dub availability, but I watched it subbed and that was the first thing I found, so I'm guess the sub is more common. Chrono Crusade, most agree the ending is heart breaking. I watched the sub, the dub draws mixed reviews. It's pretty decent, but they decided to use actual 1920's American slang (since it is set in 1920 America) so some people don't like it. I think because of this the sub is usually readily available. Madoka Magica Talk about a gut punch. Emotionally shocking rollercoaster from episode 3 on. Very unique. No dub yet, although I expect there will be. Ano Hana The new Clannad/Cross Game, currently airing so no dub. Katanagatari has a few emotionally shocking episodes. Episode 4 was bone chilling. Some people found the first 3 episodes boring (heavy on the dialog). No dub as of yet Shiki was a very good horror show from last year. Certainly made you feel scared for characters. Anyone could die. Chrome Shelled Regios I found it emotionally appealing, although I can't rank it as better then mediocre to decent. No dub, but some very funny Engrish. (They actually got the grammar right, just the pronunciation is terrible.) Neon Genesis Evangelion The mainstream recommendation of emotionally arousing. And it is. There is a reason it is so heavily recommended. I prefer the sub, although most people think the dub is rather good. I don't hate the dub myself, I just tend to prefer the sub. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Another "mainstream" anime, but I really think you ought to consider it, even if you have seen the first FMA anime. This version follows the manga and starts off slower, but finishes much stronger. Dub and sub are equal in my opinion, though I watched it first in subs.

I'll just ignore whether a dub exists for these or not since you can always opt for the subtitled version.
Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999. Two great movies from the Galaxy Express 999 anime. It's from the late 70s-early 80s so it may not be on the "mainstream" lists. Visions of Escaflowne. Series with Yoko Kanno's music always invoke emotion. Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Yes, it's mainstream, but it's a classic and available in unedited subtitled version. The movie Do You Remember Love is also a classic. Project A-ko Very well done, crazy comedy from the 80s. Whisper of the Heart Studio Ghibli not directed by Miyazaki. Romantic, heartwarming film. |
