Episode 3:
Spoiler:

I have to admit that the fan service is kind of putting me off, so hopefully the story doesn't end up disappointing--it's been a bit slow to start but it seems like things will start to pick up next episode. Does anyone know how many episodes there are going to be?

She can also be a rather normal girl when she's not fighting.
This reminded me of the unknown but still great Japanese action movie called Re: born. Where there is a moment that the protagonist uses this weapon to kill several mercenaries. I remember the action scenes were so good that many people thought the film was Korean or Chinese rather than Japanese.

Profusion of large bosoms and strangely large, flat eyes a bit distracting, also evil stuffed toys are apparently standard Mahou Shoujo fare now. Somebody blast that familiar goblin.

Actually this seems like a very decent show, with a thoughtful take on the effects of war, and respectable female characters. It certainly isn't as dark or camp as Magical Girl Site. The nurse magical girl does seem to be using emotionally blackmail on Asuka, a nice jab at the Magical BFF trope common in these shows. Can't wait for the next ep.

It's Asuka's own fault in a way. She's just trying to get Asuka to owe up to her own words.

It's called a karambit.

Funnily enough the guy in the movie clip you linked to doesn't even use it in the scenes shown. He just holds one in the preview thumbnail. ^^

my intention was to create the desire to see this film in people, but I think I was misinterpreted, as well as Nissin and the commercial with Naomi Osaka

The Karambit use scene begins at 4:10.

Nozomi looks she definitely gonna have her own set of trauma coming her way. The next preview seemed to imply that she at least loses a limb. I just hope she survives.

Have seen enough yandere to sense that Kurumi certainly has signs of being one. I won't name all the situations but.. just mentioneing she is the "best" friend when faced by the two other girls is a clear sign.

The man killed by being boxed somehow reminds me of Fear in Cube. ><

I think Asuka has already kept her promise to protect Kurumi, by fighting to the point that she's suffering flashbacks and her parents have been horribly murdered. She's done all that can be expected of flesh and blood, to the point where the government should be looking into creating new magical girls, and Kurumi should be accepting that...except that her dependence on Asuka may be the only think keeping her from breakdown herself. I can foresee Asuka losing a limb or three, and a Yandere Kurumi attempting to strangle her friend because 'you broke your promise to protect me'. I'm speculating, but that would be a decent jab at the conflict between invulnerably heroic and idealistic Mahou Shoujo, and real combat where mental stress necessitates strict turnover.

Just the way her eyes darken when those two other girls call themselves Asuka's friends as she whispers "friends?" is enough to lead me to believe that she's a yandere.

It sucks for Asuka but the message of the show is that war never ends and you never stop being a magical girl. Asuka is just running away from reality. Asuka says she stopped being a magic girl so she wouldn't lose any more people close to her but it's the other way around: you fight to protect those people.

It's just like Kurumi said at the end of the episode. If you want to protect those close to you, you have to fight. You can't protect anything if you don't fight. Reality keeps moving forward. If you don't move on along with it, you get crushed.

In any case, a reality check is coming for Asuka next episode, whether she likes it or not.

You can say it is the other way around...but that is straight up wrong. It was fighting in the first place that caused Asuka to lose people close to her. Heck that message is being revived in the present situation. The kidnapped girl's father doing the work he does is exactly what just caused that kidnapping to happen. She's not kidnapped because she knows Asuka, but because of the work her father is doing. If he was an office clerk his daughter would be safe and sound.

The only reality check is a reminder that other people's actions can hurt Asuka. Whether Asuka fights or not, someone else choosing to fight can impact her world and the people around her. She's now got to make the choice to take action to clean up another person's mess.

And people are allowed to retire. Especially in a situation like this one it is perfectly justified for Asuka to be done. If they are going to treat magical girls as soldiers then they should be able to retire when they reach their limit and someone else can take up the job.

Not sure we should be taking life lessons from the yandere. Kurumi is the one who needs a reality check. The war ended and she had a choice of continuing on or retiring herself. Asuka had a responsibility for pulling her in to look after her during that conflict. But what came after was Kurumi's own responsibility.

What Kurumi said is the reality of that world. It's a violent world and people around Asuka are gonna get in trouble whether she likes it or not, like what happened with Sayako in episode 1. Sayako would be dead if Asuka didn't fight. And that's the point. Is Asuka just gonna watch and do nothing when the people close to her are in danger? If Asuka doesn't want to fight, that's up her. But she's deluding herself if she thinks people around her are gonna be safer that way.

Sure but it doesn't change the fact that Asuka knows her. She's close to her. She's one of those people she says she would protect by not being a magical girl. Yet, just like Kurumi said, you can't protect anyone if you don't fight.

Kurumi is not blaming Asuka. She's not saying "these people are in danger because of you." All she's saying is that if Asuka really means it when she says she wants to protect those close to her, she has to fight. All Asuka protects by not fighting is herself, not those around her.

This series fellas just this chapter was straight to the point with politics and terrorism, mahou shojou just make that problem worse..and the villains plans shudder as that is basic but very real.

poor nozomi she was just a girl in the wrong place and that will hurt a lot....forever...poor girl

Abigail you deserved that

This chapter signature scene was not the torture...was the mascot giving explanation like any precure or other mahou shojou i laught at that, was so dissonant yet something is expected

this anime rocks

Asuka Ep 4 was far more disturbing than any Goblin Slayer episode. That was pretty gruesome.

We got a little more back story and a little more world building.

Damn, they kept it pretty violent for the torture scenes. Poor Nozomi, she doesn't deserve that at all.

Very good and faithfull adaption, the animation studio did a great job here, action scenes were also great. Asuka is indeed not a popular and very original serie but is a little masterpiece in the sea of dark magical girls shows. 9/10

Watched episode 4:

Torture seems to be a normal thing for this anime. Well, that surprise shot by Kurumi on Abegail allow them to escape the room. Did not expect that her syringe can fire it's needle like a dart gun. Maybe Kurumi can make Nozomi's arm grow again?

Asuka vs two creepy russian guys next episode. Can't wait for next week, this show is getting hot.
