A few unlicensed series to consider:
Peter Pan no Bouken (four episodes so far) Mama Is a Fourth-Grader (only four episides were ever fansubbed, which is a shame) Ribon no Kishi (only one episode is available thus far, and there may be only four, but I hope someone picks up and completes the whole series) Kaiketsu Zorori (only one episode was ever fansubbed, which is a dirty rotten shame) and perhaps: Keroro Gunsou Mahou Shoujo Tai Sugar Sugar Rune And there's always Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon And some R1 DVDs: Grrl Power Probably most of Galaxy Angel Jubei-Chan I Someday's Dreamers Magical Project S Kamichu! ***** Rozen Maiden isn't really suitable for children, even if most of the characters are dolls. If your niece does watch Traumend, expect her to be devastated by the tenth episode. |

Yup, I'm sure she'd like Sugar Sugar Rune and Mahô Shôjo Tai. I'm not sure about Keroro or Ichigo Mashimaro though, or Kare Kano. The "rythm" of those isn't made for children I'd say...
Then of course, any Ghibli will be perfect ( except Mononoke, which can be scary...).

A couple of series that no one has suggested thus far:
Another series worth looking into is Gakuen Alice. However, of the 26 episodes in this series the last to be subbed was #15, and that was several months ago. |

Scrapped Princess. Nice mix of plot, comedy, adventure, family and (somewhat) moral themes, combat, and touching moments. I'm sure she'll be able to handle it. Its basically set in a post-apocalyptic medieval world, and features a 15+ year old girl wandering the countryside (with her brother and sister) as an unwanted princess, as a prophecy states that she will destroy the world when she turns 16. Interesting?
Its licensed, but I'm sure you can buy it. |

I strongly second Twin Spica. Twin Spica is very good even for someone of my age and teaches a lot of values without getting preachy.
Akazukin Chacha is good, too. It's a magical girl show and an overall pleasant one. Haibane Renmei would also be nice. Even if it gets a bit dark at times, everything goes well in the end. I'd also like to recommend Alien Nine and Narutaru. Just kidding, you wouldn't want to traumatize your niece. |
