You shouldn't compare the anime to the manga at all. The anime ended that way because it decides to recreate an arc in the manga and that's it. The question people usually have is if Lucy dies or lives, and the director wants you to figure that out for yourself/make your own interpretation. What does the clock starting to work mean to you? If Lucy lives, do you think that it's only Nyuu who came back? After all these discussions both sides have good points, so it comes down to if you're optimistic or pessimistic. I like to think of a happy ending for Elfen Lied, so I decided to make Lucy live. Of course we'll never know, but for me the ending's good enough. To tell you the truth if we see Lucy at the end, it wouldn't have as much impact to me as the current ending. If the ending shows Lucy being killed, then people will complain the the ending is Gainax'ed. I support the ending by arguing that it leaves the audience unexpected until the very end, because that's pretty much how the whole series feel to me...unexpected.

Nah I think... well it's confusing. I think she doesn't kill because Kurama told her not to. She says that to... what's his face? The guy who tried to kill her on the beach. But she also DOES say, she doesn't want to kill anyone who's a threat to her.

It seems that she doesn't hear the voice telling her to kill (probably coming from Lucy) like all the other vector virus diclonius so it is easier for her.

I do not think the voice comes from lucy since she fought the thing too in the manga especially that voice is something unnatural

It appears that Lucy was three personalities in the same body since the voice could take over just like Nyu could. And the voice died at the end of 106 so any diclonius born after that would not hear it. I think, had Lucy's mother been able to take her out of the orphanage and raise her as she had planned to do, there would never have been a voice telling Lucy to kill. If anything, she would have had a voice telling her to have a lot of children.

Can anyone explain, why Kurama's daughter was a diclonius(I'm watching the 10th ep. now)? Did they intentionally infect her during her prenatal period, or the virus itself is simply highly contageous.

I thought that it was just somekind of scientific experiment to modify the DNA to create a perfect weapon for military purposes. And like in modern science they just use viruses to inject the given nucleotide chain into particular places of the DNA. So the virus use was controlled and each contagion was intentional.

However, as Kurama was really astounded by horns of his little daughter, it could be that it's some kind of an air- or water- or blood- transmitted desease. But in that case it could be epidemic. Or may be it could be transmitted only by direct contact (immediate contagion), but then Kohta and Yuka are already contaminated...

And may be they just involved Kurama's wife in the experiment without his consent?

May be i just missed something.
Any ideas?

Remember the flashback when the young diclonius girl escaped? Number 3 was it?
In episode 10, well when she stuck her vector into his head, thats when she infected him...

The same reason why after Lucy mangled bando, they wanted to take his testicles, so he can't bear diclonius children in the future
If i remember thats the reason...
They aren't a military experiment, a real explaination to what they are is found later on/ in the manga

That is how they originally realized that Lucy was out there somewhere. (Except for Kakuzawa who always knew about her.) The anime never explained it, but the vector virus diclonius, unlike true diclonius like Lucy, aged at over twice the normal rate. Nana was only 6 and Mariko was not yet 5. Lucy was evidently responsible for all the first generation Vector Virus diclonius.

If you notice, during that ep where one of the diclonius broke out, she said thank you or something and used her vector to pass through Kurama's head, the diclonius virus is transmitted through the vectors as it passes through someone. So basically he was infected by that escaped Diclonius.

It seems that the horned director was a queen. I didn't read the manga, however it looks like he is the one who wants diclonius to be the only race on the Earth... What i couldn't get used to is that after all those murders Kouta managed to forgive Lucy and to fall in love with her (may be in reverse order), despite the fact that she'd slaughtered all his family (by the way, i didn't noticed how she'd killed his mother.. or she hadn't do that?)... And in Mariko case. It looks like they try to persuade that after killing a hundred of people she certainly deserves to be forgiven... as she's just a child.. it's not her fault, just "don't give guns to children". And that makes me feel a bit uncomfortable and the same time, it introduces moral contradictions and makes the anime more intriguing...

The one more unanswered question is what is the origin of the diclonius virus, is it just a mutated flue or may be it's some kind of military research. Who was the first diclonius(i think for now, that it's the horned director.. just forgot what his name is) and where did he come from?

Wow, I am a bit late on watching Elfen Lied. I always wondered why I keep seeing this thread bumped up to the top. So, I actually decided to sit down and watch the first two episodes since it happend to be up on the Comcasts On Demand service for the Anime Network. I was hooked and I bought the Vol. 1 Boxset and I'll eventually get the rest when I get my next paycheck. >_> Awesome anime from the very start and I can't wait to see the conclusion.

The horned director, Kakuzawa, is not a queen or king. He is a decendant of the diclonius race that existed a 1000 years ago. They mated with normal humans until they lost their power. Their decendants who had horns were hunted and killed as demons by the Samaria. He hates normal humans and wants to replace them with the diclonius, which he mistakenly believes is a seperate species. He was responsible for everything. If he had not kidnaped Lucy's mother because all her children would be true diclonius (implying that Lucy might not have been her only child) then she would have taken Lucy out of the orphanage and raised her. There would never have been any murders or vector virus diclonius.

Lucy had nothing to do with Kouta's mother's death. I don't beleive that his mother is ever mentioned.

The vector virus had evidently been around for a long time. They mention that diclonius had been born from time to time in the past, but they died out after a generation because they were sterile. Note that there is no mention of them killing or infecting other people and the ancient diclonius race evidently got along with the normal humans since they lost their powers from mating wth them. I think that the true purpose of the virus was to insure that the diclonius did not lose their power again. To insure that Lucy and her siblings had fully diclonius children even though one parent was not a diclonius. That way, over time, the human race would become diclonius.

It's not Lucy! She would have been 14 when that happened, not to mention the fact that the diclonius who infected Kurama was shot in the head and killed. The only time child Lucy was shown was during her fevered dreams and Kouta's flashback. All of the others (killing the boy with the dog, killing the policeman, infecting Karuma) were vector virus diclonius. Lucy was already 14 or 15 when they realized that she existed and captured her.

Something happened quite recently, that somehow activated the virus. I suppose it was Kakuzawa who made it.

Kakuzawa did not create the virus, but in the Manga during the Mariko arc he sent a rocket full of the virus to explode over the city to spread it. I don't think it was a matter of activating it. I think that it was the desire for revenge for the way that she was treated that caused Lucy to start spreading the virus. And Kakuzawa was at fault since she grew up in the orphanage because he kidnapped her mother. I suspect that the vector virus diclonius tried to spread the virus because they were all tied back to Lucy. If, as I suspect, Lucy had older siblings living with her father in another part of Japan, then they did not infect anyone because all of the vector virus diclonius were born around where Lucy stayed.
