What an utterly brilliant series. The philosophy, the music, the characters, the artwork. Everything was perfect.

If they did, wouldn't that itself be the announcement?

In any case it seems no one reported what the supposed announcement was.

From a tumblr site (I can't find a more direct source yet):

Quote:
1. The anime site got changed. (Masaoka’s picture leads to the latest manga chapter in case anyone’s interested)

2. The spin-off novel Inspector Nobuchika Ginoza will be released in September. Thanks to Nitrokun’s twitter we know it’ll take part before episode one.

3. Drama CD adaptation of Namae no nai kaibutsu will be released in September as well. The jacket had Kougami and Sasayama (you can see Kougami on the website). The (additional) cast will be announced soon.

4. Shiotani Naoyoshi’s original collection will be released at Comiket (art, comments etc).

5. On 6th September, there will be a new Psycho-Pass event, the ticket is included in DVD/BD 8. ETA: There will be some big (?) announcement at the event (taken from various Japanese twitters, because I personally missed that part).

It ain't a rumor any more.

Production I.G President & CEO Mitsuhisa Ishikawa acknowledged in his Anime Expo panel on Saturday that a second season of the Psycho-Pass anime is in the works. According to Ishikawa, script development and production are underway.

The psychological action series debuted in Japan last October. Funimation streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and confirmed in March that it will release the anime on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in Spring 2014.

The official website for the television anime series announced on Friday that an all-night screening event will include an "important project announcement." The event will screen the entire 22-episode series in select theaters in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo on September 6 starting at 9:00 p.m.

The announcement will be made at the Tokyo site, while the remaining screening locations will have live streaming of the announcement. The series' main cast and staff will also attend.

The anime's eighth Blu-ray Disc and DVD volumes will ship on July 26. Each disc will include an application for a random drawing that will give away free tickets to the screening event. Winners will be notified at the end of August.

What a pleasant surprise. The BD sales must be doing very well for it to warrant a second season.

Guess Urobutcher has become a benchmark for success nowadays. Here's hoping Gargantia would get a sequel treatment as well.

Will Kogami finally give Akane the Dominator?

Will moe still be not allowed?

Will Spookie Boogie be reborn?

Will the profits of this season go towards maintenance of the talking brains' cerebrospinal fluid tanks?

This is actually good news. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in thinking that the first season left way too many themes that it hinted at but didn't manage to explore.

I read that the manga sold 380,000 copies in three volumes which sounds quite good for a seinen and adaptation. Also, the novels are even more violent than the tv series. There is also a CD drama and judging by the cover it's a prequel set around the time Kogami was an Inspector alongside Sasayama just like the novel. But still no news about the second season or movie? Nevertheless, happy new year and may the hyper oats be with you!

I've just found out the last Bluray/DVD had an audio drama set after the finale. It's short but it helps to explain more how are Kogami and Akane feeling:
Spoiler for summary:

The novel also has a far sadder ending
Spoiler for summary:
