Very surprised there were no instances of Annani Issho Dattanoni(Gundam SEED's first ending theme, and used as a general theme through it and Destiny).
It's a very beautiful song that captures the atmosphere so wonderfully. It's steps above most anime music, IMO. |

& Evangelion's musical score wins so much for having Beethoven & Johann Pachelbel music.

I'm not sure if it counts as anime music, but in La Corda D'Oro 'Chaconne' by (perhaps) Vitali was played and it's wonderful, along with Reger's 'Romanze in G major' and Weinaiwski's 'Polonaise Brilliante.' And if you've ever enjoyed watching 'Beyond the Clouds' I'd recommend aquiring the soundtrack, especially for 'Sayuuri's Melody.' |

Unfortunately I cannot limit it to 10... So, I will use honorable mentions to list all...
(???) - (???) (I have downloaded it as Kurapica character song Inori, but it is not, it is slow, voice is different, and lyrics seem to be different, so currently an unknown for me, but a definitely good unknown) Mashou no Tenshi - Hunter X Hunter I've Got a Feeling - Beck Chain of Mind - Prince of Tennis Shoot - Gundam Seed Meteor - Gundam Seed Gluhen - Weiss Kreuz Open Up Your Mind - Saiyuki Nostalgia - Air Aozora - Air Honorable mentions, though, not different from the ones above, for me... Kokoro no Chikara - Konjiki no Gash Bell Signal of Solitude - Serial Experiments Lain Forces - Berserk Nothing Can Be Explained - Bleach Grand Slam - Prince of Tennis Follow Me - Beck Stone Roses - Weiss Kreuz Shadows and Light - Weiss Kreuz |

Exclude Op & ED. Hmmm, here is my list in more or less chronological order.
1. Ai, Oboete Imasuka? ( Love, Remember : Macross the Movie ) : The song that created the whole anime music industry. Anime song was never the same after this. 2. Kaze no Lullaby ( Wind's Lullaby : Megazone 23 Part 1 ) : The song that created the cyber idol frenzy in Asia. It is a song you just can't forget. 3. Himitsu Kudasai ( Keep the secret : Megazone 23 Part 2 ) : The song that created the Anime Music Video fad. Its effect is still felt in many music videos in Asia. 4. Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4, "Inextinguishable" ( Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars (movie) (1988) ) : The first time an European orchestra ( Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra ) is heard in its full glory in anime. 5. Various music heard in the movie v-Gundam: Char's Counterattack : perhaps the longest original orchestra pieces in anime history played by Tokyo Philharmonic, I think. This movie probably holds record for most money spent on music performance for an anime production. 6. God Knows and Lost my Music ( Suzumiya Haruhi ) : New standard for music performance scene in anime 7. Dies Irae ( Gregorian Chant, various anime series ) : The running joke among music major is in order to pass music history exam, you must be able to name 5 important works composed in 19th century Europe, that doesn't have Dies Irae motive in it. The starting 8 note series of FEFDECDD, is used so often, many music history text book has the full score of this song in it at the first chapter. 8. Beethoven's 9th Symphony ( R.O.D., Nodame Cantabile, many other anime episodes ) : It is the Beethoven's Choral Symphony! This is the work that is played to commemorate Falling of Berlin Wall and so many other historical occasions! 9. Ano Sora? ( AIR , at the Misuzu's last scene ) : I have to mention something from AIR 10. Bach/Gounod's Ave Maria with additions by the voice actor Rino (Maria-sama ga Miteru ) : I thought that earlier operatic aria performance by Kanina Shizuka was a hired vocal major filling in for short while. Then I hear this wonderful performance of Ave Maria by the same operatic soprano, with many additional decorations not found in any recordings I heard ( and I believe I heard more than 50 different singers sing this Ave Maria ) and they tell me the voice actor herself sung it!!! Either that Voice Actor originally entered college as classical vocal major ( likely mezzo-soprano ), or she has received some serious classical voice lessons. 11. The many songs in Honey and Clover series : Those were plain good songs by simply competent singers. 12. The interlude music for Azu Manga Daioh : G C DE C AG CCC Simple 10 note melody. So effective. 13. Shostakovich's 7th Symphony ' Leningrad ' ( Suzumiya Haruhi, the Day of Sagittarius Game BGM ) : I also liked the use of Tchaikovshy's 4th symphony's 4th movement in this episode. My avatar, Evegeny Mravinsky is recognized as the best conductor for these works. After all, his orchestra is the Leningrad Philhramonic ( now called St. Petersburg Philharmonic ) which is recognized as on same level as Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic for most works and the authority for Russian composers. 14. Pablo de Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen (1878) ( School rumble, when Tenma or Harima is falling into a black hole ) : Very effective 15. Pazu's Trumpet Solo ( Castle in the Sky, Laputa ) : Such Crisp and uplifting piece, fitting for the dawn and flight of the bird. I also liked the music for the clouds here. 16. Athena's song in Aria: The animation ( the episode which showed Alicia, Akira, and Athena as Singles and the first time Alicia and Akira hears Athena's song ) : The impact of the song was such, that I closed my eyes to hear the song, the first time I saw the scene. That was a show stopper, worthy of one minute of silence followed by ten minute standing ovation. Aria series has many other good music as well, and Athena sings real well. 17. The piano work's in Koi Kaze : It just lifted the whole anime series into another level.

In no particular order:
Fleet Battle (Zeta Gundam) The First Advent (Turn A Gundam) Masquerade (Tekkaman Blade) Dog Fighter (Super Dimensional Fortress Macross) Dog Fight (Macross Plus) White V Gundam (Victory Gundam) (Special mention as probably knows this one but its absolutely incredible, and just when you think its done building strength it keeps building and building and you think your going to explode and this is like 30 seconds before the end of a 3 minute song that has been adding layer upon layer) Dance of The Curse (Tenkuu No Escaflowne) Get It By Your Hands (Eureka 7) Totsugeki Love Heart (Macross 7) Rock Cafe (Megazone 23) |
