Is it a straight continuation? Because I'm having bad memories of what happened to Minami-ke.

They become the rare anime that the second season has green-lit while they air the last episode two weeks later.

While this is good news, it's somewhat worrying that the second season might get a budget cut because Mitsudomoe isn't selling too well as far as I'm aware of.

The Mitsudomoe manga wasn't too popular to begin with. I'm surprised they're making an S2, I thought it was b/c the S1 DVDs were selling well?

Well, Mitsudomoe is definitely not as popular as K-ON! so I doubt something like that happening unfortunately.

This type of anime series (whose second season starts one cour after its first season ends) is called a split two cour long anime. It's one season in terms of production. So nothing changes.

Simply put, production time is consistency, and budget is framerate.
Even poor animation is costlier than a high-quality still shot.

So it would just continue? then why called it a second season then?

Because of the one-cour break between seasons - it can't be called one series if it's not continuously broadcast. A good recent anology would be Natsu no Arashi, which took a one-cour break. Major is another example, as that's currently on episode 152 but has always taken a one or two-cour break between seasons. Thus, the current run is generally referred to as "Season 6".

Koihime musou is also the same? I had the feeling that the 2nd and 3rd season connect directly but I didn't get that much feeling from it being like the same situation as this.

Yes, the two seasons of Koihime Musou are in the same situation as this one.

Out of all the new animes this season, this I thought was the least likely to get a new season. But, still, I'm kinda happy.
