Fall 2012 General Impressions Thread: Post Your Opinion and Grade...

Well, I ended up watching a ton of the new shows so far. I've watched the latest on all my listed shows. Rating posted after show's name.

Ones I'm most excited about so far:
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - 8/10
I don't go for much romcoms but this one's pretty good and wild for me.
Zetsuen no Tempest - 8/10
One of the best premiere epis I've seen this season and the action keeps up.
Btoom! - 7/10
It's still in introductions but it's something I'm likely following. Sucker for survival themes is me.
Shin Sekai Yori - 7/10
Very intriguing stuff. Liking this dystopian setting.
Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankei Nai yo ne - 7/10
Yea, yea, another brocon imouto anime. It's likeable and I'm sorta following Silver Link since the impressive Tasogare Otome x Amnesia.
Ixion Saga DT - 7/10
Funny stuff and a nice surprise find out of all the great stuff this season.
Magi - 8/10
The other best premiere epi this season. I knew nothing of this and this is one of those animes that will have me spoiling myself with print form very soon.

Others undecided on keeping/dropping but will watch a bit more:
Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! - 8/10
It's moe stuff to me, cute but I usually get tired of it and forget about it.
K - 7/10
It still looks visually great, but story seems empty or doesn't draw me in at all. Looks like BL too, nothing against it, but still no story to me.
Psycho Pass - 8/10
Looks interesting, sorta Minority Report arrests, I'm leaning hard on keeping.
Robotics;Notes & Little Busters! - 6/10
Yea, lumped together. Slow starters maybe but it's not keeping my attention compared to all the great stuff.
JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken - 6/10
Code:Breaker - 7/10
Waiting for this is break out some excitement.
Aoi Sekai no Chuunshin de - n/a
Just premiered, it didn't impress and felt like it skipped through a lot throughout the one episode.

Damn... There're just so many things to watch. I'm also following up on continuing series: One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Kingdom, Sword Art Online, Muv Luv Alternative TE, Bakuman, Jormungand, Medaka Box.
Edit in: Forgot to mention Tanken Driland, subbing is behind so it's slow going but still a good series.

A great season, maybe to good witch so many things to watch and so little time... i wonder why they couldn't make seasons more even and not like 8 good or great anime in one season and maybe 1-2 in others

Jormungand 2 3 episodes seen ... 9/10

Was sort of a slow start but ep 3 reminded me why i love season 1, it was just made of pure awsome, the action the emotion the twists, it was all just so good... will miss you R and can't wait to see things even more crazy

Shinsekai Yori 4 episodes seen ... 9/10

Was in love with the past stuff not so crazy with some of the "present" day but it was interesting, full of mystery and made you think, witch is rare... episode 4 finally raveled some things and i get a feeling things are just going to get more interesting, defiantly a breath of fresh air

glad to see this show is getting a lot of hype (at least here) hope it is doing good in Japan too

LOVE the setting and what the director is trying to accomplish, not so sure what the point of ep 2 was tho with all the holo clothes changing, cute holograms and robots... and the MC is down right unlikable, but ep 3 got back on track, can't wait to see more of this world and hope it delivers

another shonen, like the MC but damn that "an eye for and eye" catchphrase is getting real annoying real fast does he have to say it every 5 minutes ?

Here is to hoping we see some good fights and plot twists and that he doesn't get swayed to much by Sakura

Expected more but seeing them animated is better than nothing since lots of gags were taken out

Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! - 7/10
I think it is pretty well executed for it's genre to pass time. Nothing memorable but funny at least

Sword Art Online (ALO) - 7.5/10
Looks alright for now based on the past few episodes but it's doesn't feel that "serious" for now

Hayate no Gotoku: Can't Take My Eyes Off You - 5/10

Terrible Terrible art, only continuing as a long term fan and gags are no longer that funny

Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! - ep5 - 8/10
It's a good show(I like pretty much everything about this show, in fact even more than Sakurasou which I rated higher) but like some others have said, it's not memorable.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo - ep4 - 9/10
I like some of the changes they make to the story. Except 1.So I'm quite satisfied. The jokes are still funny to me even if I read the novel and manga.

Chiisai Oyaji Nikki - ep2 - 7.5/10
Adorable. Even though there isn't really anything going on since it's only 35seconds per episode.
Bakuman3 - ep1 - 6/10
The only thing I like from ep1 is Eiji.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - 6/10
I like the first few episodes more than what I've read from the first few chapters.
I didn't like the manga even after I read 10volumes even though I tend to like this type of show. The anime didn't successful make me bother about the main couple either.
I won't be dropping since I am watching for Sasayan, Natsume and Yamaken.

K - ep3 - 6/10
So far dropped. I can't even remember the name of the characters.

Robotics;Notes - ep3 - 8/10
Early on I find the main girl a bit too energetic(but I don't dislike her).
So far I'm liking it.

Little Busters! - ep4 - 8/10
I didn't play the game but I did read some spoilers. I'm probably weird, because I do like what I've watched so far.

Kamisama Hajimemashita - ep4 - 7/10
I like the story. But I don't really laugh at the parts that are suppose to be funny. Shoujo manga need large panels to get the doki doki feeling, but it doesn't really work well for shoujo anime(or for this series). But so far I do like the characters.

Below are the assessments I made at the beginning of the season.

A List:

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (I really like the sense of humor, the characters, the story and the animation - reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes. An absolute winner for me so far.)

Shinseki Yori (Wow - what an amazing example of storytelling. Really good stuff and I am enjoying it a lot.)

Sukitto Iinayo (I enjoy the manga quite a bit and thus far I have been quite impressed by the anime adaptation as well. So much of the story just plain "works" for me. Having such a lovely OP is also a plus.)

B List:

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (Another excellent manga adaptation - in some ways for me more successful in terms of total impact than the manga, though I still personally prefer Sukiito Iinayo.)

Little Busters! (Like Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! the storyline and characters and humor in this one just "work" for me, and on so many levels.)

Girls and Panzer (To be honest this one is the surprise of the season for me thus far - I was really disappointed with Upotte! and was expecting this one to be more of the same stuff, but it has unexpectedly been a very breezy and enjoyable ride for me so far.)

Magi (This one had a lot of hype before the season, and I am happy to see that this bizarre hodge podge of "Arabic folklore stories" actually was way more enjoyable for me than I expected it to be. I find myself especially liking the three main characters.)

C List:

K (Still not quite sure what to think of this series - as others have pointed out it has a lot going for it but I am still not sure what in the world is going on. )

Kamisama Hajimemashita (To be honest this was a little of a disappointment for me - I am a big fan of the manga and for me the material here was too scrunched together and presented too fast for my taste - I prefer the pace of the manga proper, but that aside it is a fairly good job, I guess.)

Busou Shinki (I really enjoyed the OVA's that were released some time back and the series has proved to be unexpectedly ... well ... cute I guess would be the right word. At least so far.)

Aikatsu! (Another unexpected surprise for me - although the series seems to me to be squarely aimed at a younger audience and has a disconcerting art style similar to Akb0048 [which did not work as a total "package" for me unfortunately] I kinda found myself enjoying the story thus far. We will see how it fares, but for now I am enjoying it.)

Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb (I have a sort of love/hate relationship with all the Hidamari series - I like the story and the characters and the pace of the series, but the art style absolutely irritates me and drives me up the wall, constantly and almost forcefully yanking me out of the medium proper and making me say "Gah! Why?!" But for now I guess I will keep trying with this season. )

Carryovers: Sword Art Online, Joshiraku (slow subbing), Kuromajo-san ga Tooru

Still on Trial List:

Sakurasou no Pet no Kanojo (Another strange collection of elements that normally would have me headdesk'ing hard, but somehow manages to come off as unexpectedly charming ... erm ... somehow.)

Robotics; Notes (There's a lot here that doesn't really do much for me - never been a big mecha fan, for example - but there is a something to the story that has a certain charm thus far and am curious to see if it will grow.)

Dropped:

A List: In Order of Enjoyment...

Hiiro no Kakera -Second Chapter-
Episodes Watched : 6/13
Rating : 8
Comments : The story's quality gets slightly worse than season 1 and Tamaki gets even more annoying as well, but I only watched it to see character development from side characters and the ending as a way to see which guy Tamaki will end up with. Other than that, it was beautiful visually and the fight scenes, despite being so short that it hurts, looks great as well.

Comments : This offers one of the most beautifully enticing animations of the season, alongside the elegant visuals and fluid fight scenes. The story, despite having interesting ideas, was pretty weak and slow to begin with.

Comments : An imouto incest romance with lacking story, but the great visuals and fanservice are the core behind this anime. The jokes are pretty decent in my opinion. It's a little different than most incest harems, but offers some outsanding ideas.

Comments : Has astoundingly unique visuals that makes up for a lot of sparklingly shiny animation, the story is a little slow but serves as a great tool to progress character development for various relationships. Plus I found Mashiro to be cute.

Medaka Box Abnormal

Comments : It's better than season 1 due to slowly shifting into a flashy action shounen. The fight scenes are still good to look, the wordy dialogues are still here. I never grow tired of them, and I can't wait to see some more mysterious hints they slowly reveal later on.

Psycho-Pass

Comments : I loved Madoka Magica, so Gen Urobuchi's latest masterpiece happens to be one of my top shows of the season. Everything about it are great, ranging from the endearing visuals and neat backgrounds to the intriguing sci-fi plot and the mystery behind the dystopia the cops are supposed to live in. Plus the astounding music fits it perfectly, and despite having some plotholes, I'm expecting to see many mysterious things to slowly hit the wall later on.

Aoi Sekai no Chuusin de

Comments : It's nothing special, but has charming retro atmosphere to it. While the characters' personalities have nothing to do with their original counterparts, I simply enjoyed it for silly entertainment and pretty visuals, alongside the flashy fight scenes. Clearly the shining hidden gem of the season for me.

Comments : The visuals are unique, the setting was great, but I do have a few issues with the storyline, which was pretty slow and confusing to begin with. Maybe I'll expect "the shit hits the fan" to happen later on.

Comments : I like those charming visuals and the adolescent delusions are portrayed in a masterfully silly manner. The voice acting was pretty great as well.

Comments : It's nice to see mecha musume dolls appearing in a healing action story, and the visuals are greater than I thought. I greatly enjoyed the fun conversations between the heroines and how they have to fight against the other Shinki, and I thought it was endled for the sake of showing fun things. By the way, it happens to be a moe hidden gem of the season.

Comments : It was better than I thought, and everything are beyond great. The only questionable thing is how the story will offer something outstanding later on though.

Comments : I feel like I'm watching Fist of the North Star, which gives me a good old 80's vibes with charming visuals and a great story. Part 1 looks pretty weak, but the fast pacing clearly makes things right.

Comments : The premise was nothing original but good, the visuals are enticing, the music was brilliant, and it has the feeling of a modern shounen show. I don't know if things gets better or worse, but I'll judge it for later.

Comments : The anime industry rarely offers Middle Eastern settings, but this one turns to be very outstanding. The visuals are good, not to mention the fight scenes which were above decent. I already know the story to get better later on from what I heard, but let's see if Yoshino can play the card here.

Comments : A fun shounen adventure involving MMORPG undertones. I never was expecting the main character to use perverted attacks towards the antagonist, and it was nice. Everything looks great, and it was a perfect fun ride we need in a semi-cold season.

Comments : I wasn't really a fan of tanks, but the "cute girls doing cute things" turns out to be a delectable cake I'm going to expect watching it. At least the military moe trend was still here and it's nice to see them using such military idea playing a major role here.

Comments : Visuals are pretty good despite being nothing special, and despite hearing many bad things about the VN, it doesn't look as terrible as I thought. The pacing seemed a little slower as well, but the robot sequences are fun to watch.

Anyways, it turn out to be a great fall season for me, so I want to see how things improves much later on.
