I think the part covered by anime this time would not include detailed story about main enemy force. It's a secret organization called 'Phantom Task'
(literal translation from original Japanese words was 'Fallen Nation Corporation,' but he introduced an official English name for them in Vol.6 of novel)

Its influence would be shown in the anime part, but agents of Phantom Task only begins to appear in person at Vol.5 of novel, which is probably not covered by 12 episodes anime. So my guess is that people watching the anime would have vague hint of major enemy faction, but not know about it in detail.

There is not much you can expect from a 12 episode series. But IS is an interesting read. Hopefully there will be more seasons.

Just getting the thought that this was going to turn out as a harem anime with the fact there is a guy with a special ability to pilot a new mech only girls seem to be able to use. Then was forced to go to an All "Girl" Academy where everyone around him is a girl. It was bound to happen in my mind. But 12 episodes... Seems like it will be rushed in some points, I do hope for more seasons.

only 6 volumes out so its not enough material to make anything more than 12 or 13.

Didn't To Aru's first season cover only the first five light novels, yet it got 24-26 eps?

First six novels in fact, and they had to resort to quite a few cuts to even fit all that in.

It really depends on how much contents there are in a single volume of the series.

Some stories like it thick and heavy, others have it light with sugar and cream.

Like what Chaos said, it really depends on the content of the light novel.

But typically, an average length light novel volume deserves 5-6 episodes.

4 episodes is for most parts, is good and acceptable.
