Macbeth but with Haruhi characters would be so much better than the movie version my class watched last year. One of the witches had a southern accent, and everyone had a mullet. The only theatre version of it that I've seen involved vampires and dance numbers set to eightiesish music out of nowhere.

I also saw that theatre group do A Midsummer Night's Dream. There were aliens everywhere and sometimes Puck alternated between being a gay sailor and an olden-timesy journalist.

At least the book versions were marginally more sane.

And the reason for that is because there is no one else badass and long-winded enough to play Ross.

I'm American and more than likely uncultured, I don't really remember reading anything Shakespeare, but I've been exposed to the Bard's writings enough through different media...

Though, it is sometimes more interesting (and amusing) to see things made to appear as if the Bard wrote them himself...

I was under the impression most American high school students would get exposed to at least one work of Shakespeare in their English classes. I'm pretty sure I was exposed to at least two via reading assignments.

It's one of those thing that vary depending on the state and school system. I read four Shakespeare plays (Othello, Hamlet, Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet), saw one play turned into an opera (Othello), watched several movie adaptations of the plays (King Lear, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet (x3), A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, and Taming of the Shrew), and read one derivative work (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead). I've also seen updated versions of two of his plays (West Side Story and 10 Things I Hate About You) and read the original work that one was adapted from (Pyramus and Thisbe.) Hell, in elementary school I played Oberon in a cut-down version of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

But I'm somewhat unusual in that respect... Outside of people studying theater, most American school students I've come across don't have nearly that much of an exposure to Shakespeare, if any.

You mean Shakespeare isn't a national reading requirement in English? I...I'm...*speechless* This is truly a travesty. Honestly, if they complain about the unreadability of his plays, just start pointing out all the insults and bawdy jokes. That should grab their attention. Also, Shakespearean insults. 'Nuff said. Thou odiferous motley-minded fustilarian!

Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is one of my favorite plays (I nearly died of awesome in that scene of Live Alive). I love the movie as well (though the most boring parts are lifted straight from Hamlet. I hated Hamlet, he just wouldn't shut up.)

In my case, Romeo and Juliet was read aloud in freshman year rather unenthusiastically, and we saw the 1968 Zeffirelli film. Othello is required reading in sophomore year, and it's required for kids who want to be in AP English-IV to have read Hamlet and watched the Zeffirelli movie. They're also doing a modernized rendition of Julius Caesar this year. So, yeah, it depends.

As far as I'm aware, a big issue is that there aren't national standards for education in America. Everyone complains about it, but changing it is as hard as getting the left and the right to agree.
