One thing I'm wondering about, was Marika flying a real yacht or a simulator at the start of the ep?

^A real one... But she's controlling it via remote, like U.S. combat drones.

It seemed like it was the real deal remember her and yacht club work on a satellite station orbiting the planet so they need to get there some how and I don't they have many if any commercial space flights going there.

And how about start learning the language already? Mini-skirt Space Pirates and other novels from Asahi Shimbun are not the ones to enjoy sales like Haganai, OreImo, IS, Horizon and the likes that come under Kadokawa Groups. I doubt it even with the anime the novel sales will be any different. Not to mention if the anime even sells in the first place.
Heck. Sasamoto's longest novel, ARIEL, was published under the Sonorama labels, who became bankrupt and saved by Asahi Shimbun.

That aside.
Spoiler for BD Vol 1:

Umm ... well, to be honest I am ... shocked.

I really, REALLY liked ep 1

Umm ... so much so that it might take the #2 spot of the season behind Natsume Yuuchinjou S4 for me.

I can honestly say that I had rather low expectations for this one. But it was very enjoyable....

I enjoyed the slow pace in building up the story and the background of the main characters, and thought the comedic moments were well done too. There is obviously a lot more going on behind the scenes too (or ... erm ... so it seems to me)

8/10 vote from me on ep 1.....

(BTW, is it just me or has Satellite Studio been on a roll lately?)

Parfaits are to school girls like how burgers and bacon are to Americans.

Also, this:

Marika's "pirate outfit" always seemed a bit odd to me. But it was only when I paid attention to the ED and saw the shot of her in both her school uniform and pirate outfit that I figured out why. She's just wearing a coat and cape over her school uniform!

She's supposedly from the Uzumasa star system. I don't think that is a real one.

If people are interested, there is another space pirate novel by Sasamoto: 星のダンスを見においで (Sasamoto gave the English title "Come See the Dancing Stars!"). Yuika in 2005 reprint version looks like a prototype anime Marika

Spoiler for Novel covers:

If something that doesn't interest me is a big part of the show then I will like the show less.

Another example is - I am not a big fan of harem, so if you have a space opera where 40% of the screen time is spent on harem antics then I probably won't watch it.

Ahahaha.... NO! Maybe not until I get my scholarship so I can study in Japan. I'm too busy to study so I usually have to depend on rips and translations...

Call it piracy, but I AM living in the pirate capital of the world....

And besides, this show IS about a schoolgirl learning to pirate.

Arggg...

I think that's just Japanese people and sweets in general. They're known to love their sweets, even if it is a bit stereotypical to say that. I remember I met this girl straight out of Japan, swearing to god she wasn't a huge fan of sweets as she scarfs down like an entire ice cream cake by herself. It's all about perspective :P
