Yeah. That one was volume two. I read it yesterday... or earlier today, and read that part.

Q: Has the novel ever explained why Nagato takes all of Kyon's orders and asks him for permission and whatnot?

Q: Has the novel ever explained why Nagato takes all of Kyon's orders and asks him for permission and whatnot?
Simple answer: Kyon understand Yuki enough to have a reasonable relationship.

Longer answer: Both Mikurus (both young and adult versions) are too scared to talk to her. Itsuki's rarely talked to her at all. Haruhi shout out orders without caring if anyone agrees or not. Only Kyon actually cares about Yuki's feelings (and yes, she does have feelings, quite strong ones too; to realise that and to be able to interpret Yuki's subtle body language is part of Kyon's recently discovered talents.)

We actually have a whole thread devoted to that question:

The Order of Haruhi Suzumiya (In what order should this be watched?)

EP 9(Kyon's order), chronologically EP14. I dont understand the long scence where Yuki was sitting in the club room reading the book with all those phrases from movies, etc. Infact at normal volume you cant even hear anything other than yuki turning the pages of the book. I cant figure out what that scence is for....it seemed to have no purpose.

Go to this thread: Suzumiya Haruhi Episode 9 Discussion / Poll and read what everyone else has said about that scene (and the episode itself).

Why is Koizumi an esper? I thought ESP like powers would be...well to start off things like bending a fork, reheating a cup of coffee, predicting future events, etc. Koizumi's powers seem more in the realm of....well...."closed space caretakers", and would be more accurately described as "magic".

ESP covers a very large area, not just the few you mentioned. I would say that his abilities fall into that area. Haruhi and Yuki's abilities would seem more like magic.

Yuki and Haruhi have the ability to manipulate the attributes of reality down to the quantum level - in other words, they can step outside of the game we call "reality" and hack it (Haruhi much more thoroughly than Yuki though the former is unconscious of doing it). This is a science fiction riff on an area of physics related to information theory - in which the universe is expressed as an information ("data") field.
Basically, hacking reality *is* magic, since magic usually is defined as manipulating reality outside of the natural rules.

If you wiki/google on ESP, it is a term used to cover virtually any paranormal activity, including the telekinetic powers Itsuki demonstrates --- in his people's case, the powers can only manifest within the "closed space" universes --- according to some physics theories, new universes are springing up all the time from the quantum froth.... most of the time they're squelched but once in a while they balloon - when that happens most people call it a Big Bang There's a variety of detail differences depending on which theory you like to play with.

Because Haruhi really did sorta step over the line with Mikuru in volume 2 while filming the movie. Although to be fair, Tsuruya helped. >.>

Chapter 4 of the second novel should have that scene.

wikipedia style text and LOONG chapters. pretty much word for word translation and for the most part stories jumbled up as expected for this particular series
