I have the same problem. For some reason, Media Player Classic won't display the subtitles. And it's not the only show where I've had that problem.

What I've been doing is:

1) Demux the file
2) Convert the H264 video track to DivX
3) Convert the .ass subtitle track to .ssa
4) Convert the Vorbis audio track to mp3
5) Put everything back together using VirtualDubMod

A bit cumbersome, but it works.

Now that's what I call a roundabout way of getting past the problem. Do you embed the subs into an .avi or I got it wrong?
If you can play h264 encoded files, the subs should be viewable with VSFilter (previously known as DirectVobSub) which is part of the CCCP. Have you tried another player (like Zoom Player)? Or demuxing the sub, turning it into .srt sub with the same name as the video file?

Heh. I've never been one for shortcuts.

I've never tried Zoom Player. I'll have to look that up.

Hey guys,

Do Hauu~ release .avi versions? Because all I've ever been able to find to download are .mkv files, and this is what they look like when I try to play them (in VLC obviously):

The person who is uploading the most recent episodes on CrunchyRoll appears to be using Hauu~, at least the OP is translated exactly the same, but it looks much more sophisticated. Is that the .avi version? Does Hauu~ have a website? I just got a friend into Higurashi and I'm going to need to burn these episodes for her eventually, and I want ones that look good and are translated well too (I like Hauu~'s translations a lot ...)

Don't use VLC. Use MPC with CCCP.

The person at crunchyroll does convert the file to avi.

Okay, thanks! I'm downloading CCCP now.

EDIT: Oh hurray, it's perfect now.

This is probably the wrong place to put this comment, but i'm not sure where to put it. If it's the wrong place, i apologize...

Apparantly translators Ayu are releasing the DVD versions of Kai. What differences are there between the broadcast and DVD versions?

What I know of

- Better video quality (obviously)

- Next episode previews are at the end of each episode and their quality are dramatically better than the web previews Hauu uses.

Just curious.. have there been any attempts to 'Tarot-ize' the Higurashi characters to date? Just a bit of testing I did...

I heard some uncensoring occurred, but I can't verify that myself.

Sadly I've seen nothing comparing the TV and DVD versions.

I got the DVD for Volume 1 and the only real difference is that it's higher quality

Do you think that the others can see Hanyuu's horns?

They can. In the game that's what causes Hanyuu to remember about Takano.

Special edition airs December 24th?

It airs after the final episode too.

What would that be about? Isn't it finishing on the final episode?

My guess is that it's a Christmas special since the 24th is Christmas eve.

So it's not part of the current plot?
