My-HiME. Pretty much everything you described, with a great plot as well. Starts off seemingly shaky, but gets EPIC in the second half. Controversial ending, though
All of the Full Metal Panic series, but particularly The Second Raid. Chidori Kaname is simply one of the strongest female characters in anime. Some great drama and dialogue, particularly in the second series, but the romance leaves a little bit to be desired.

I'll second Mai-HiME and Shakugan no Shana.
Blood+ - This is sort of lacking on the romance part, but you can still try it. Action/Adventure/Fantasy Fate/Stay night fits the bill nicely. This is more on the comedy side, but Inukami is worth a shot. Just try to survive the first two episodes

^ Kaname is surely strong specially when she's holding that huge fan...
just adding... Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime on the list... EDIT: beaten on Fate >_< ok I second that

Juuni Kokuki (The Twelve Kingdoms) - you have to wait for the first episodes to pass before the main female character becomes strong, though.
If romance is not a must or yuri subtext is good enough for you, you can try Noir or Madlax, there are lots of strong, gunslinging female main characters. R.O.D. The TV

Depends on what you mean by strong, but characters like Louise I don't actually consider strong women.... But anyway, my favorite of the moment is Seirei no Moribito. Balsa (the lead) is an extremely mentally and physically strong adult woman. There is no emo, or overly bitchiness, or whining from her. She just just overall determined to achieve the things she has promised to do. Though the romance is lacking, but still I think Tanda/Balsa are pretty subtly cute.
Another you might have seen is Eureka Seven. The lead is a guy and the lead female isn't the strongest character in the world (She starts out strong, but ends up pretty useless throughout most of the anime). But female side characters like Talho and Hilda are both extremely strong willed and keep things together. You also have other side female characters who bring a lot to the plot. It has tons of romance. In fact nearly everyone is coupled up with someone. Last edited by Teletha; 2007-09-07 at 14:55. Reason: another rec 4 u |
