Episode 56 was simply perfect!

I was waiting with baited breath for Allen to smack Tikki a good one. His arm charges up ... then the Innocence fades and the slap never comes. I was a bit disappointed, but figured there was a reason why they changed it.

And then we get an extra bit of Tikki taunting Allen with reminders of the deceased -- and when General Yeeger is mentioned, accompanied by a flash of painful memories, Allen finally gives Tikki the slap he deserves (with the scene seguing perfectly into Tikki destroying Allen's arm and Innocence).

I must say that that was a well-thought out change. I think it emphasizes Allen's peaceful and gentle nature, in that it takes some serious provoking to make him lash out like that.

yea it is unusual to see him this pissed off...just goes to show how much this whole event has effected him mentally.

and it kinda wasnt fair for tyki to be jumping onto allen when he wasnt on his top form

Yeah I can't blame Allen for being that pissed off. Probably would've torn Tyki, limb from limb if he had any strength left in his arm to use. Far from the Allen that couldn't shoot Road when she was leaving the scene. The whole situation affected him deeply. Not surprising since he saw Suman's memories, understood his feelings, and desperately wanted to save him. All leading to failure and the final blow from Tyki.

Well the episode hasn't been subbed yet from my observation. Right now just basing discussion off the raw.

Having watched thru 55, I'm struck by just how dark this story is willing to go when it goes dark. Allen has seemingly endless resources of compassion, yet he's almost never rewarded (karmically speaking). One wonders how much more he can take, honestly - as I haven't read the manga I don't know the answer to that, though I suspect the answer is a helluva lot. This series doesn't pull any punches.

This was one of many episodes that I was patiently waiting to arrive, and thanks to Shinsen-subs I enjoyed every moment of it.

As you can see, the episode marked the conclusion of the sixth manga volume in the story with bloody, desparing, and ghastly finish. Things look so unfair, bleak, and gloom for the Exorcists because the Noah possess such overwhelming powers, as if they are untouchable.

Every piece of dialogue that Mikki told to Allen from the Tease up to the last moment when he crushed Allen's heart was exactly the same as in the manga.

The atmosphere got more ghastly and haunting than ever, as the conclusion bursted into the climax. Like the previous episodes recently this one as well enjoyed much high production and cinema values: still shots and shots phasing from one frame to another instantly.

They were substantial additions in order to stretch the episode, but those additions did a well job to let the audience dive deeper into the hopelessness that Allen experienced.

Spoiler:

1. Allen futilely attempts to brush off the tease from Suman's leftovers, as all clustered together to eat the latter's remains. When the tease got fed up at Allen for interrupting their meal they tried to attack him, and that's when Tykki stepped in and call them off.
That scene never happened in the manga. I speculate that in the manga Tykki was in a hurry on his quest to delete his target so right after the tease bursted out from Suman he called them off as Allen watched.
In the anime is more likely that Tykki wanted to make Allen watch the gory spectacle to add misery on the boy. Tykki was in no hurry to go after his target, so I think he let the Tease hang around some free time to let them eat all of Suman.

2. Lenalee goes in a frantic search all throughout the mountainscape and the forest to search for Allen.
For the manga Lenalee arrives back at the port just a little later after Lavi and the others cleared the ship off Akuma, and she look distressed seeking for help. That same shot of Allen also happened in the anime.

I theorize that the manga implied that Lenalee, indeed, went to search for Allen off-screen but couldn't find him.
They decide to include Lenalee's search for Allen to serve as a warning sign that Allen was about to get killed by Tykki and further expand Lenalee's nature to worry stressfully for the sake and welfare of her comrade.

3. The most dramatic change ocurred when Allen slapped Tykki through the face.
In the manga Allen slapped Tykki right after the latter met with the boy the second time. Allen exploded right away because he felt rage on Tykki for killing Suman, and as a hopeless means to avenge Suman.

The anime displays a different facet of Allen's personality regarding the tragedy. The anime has Allen as a peaceful and optimistic boy who neither wants to look for fights nor wants to prove anything for pride or satisfaction. Allen only bursts when he's imperially provoked. and that's what Tykki did mocking how easily Yeegar and the others died when he used his space manipulation on them.

A minor complain is that I imagined Cell Roron's voice somewhat howling and diseased sounding instead of the squeaky noise he makes uttering 'delete' several times on Mikki.

The episode playing out the ending before it completely finished remarked that the current arc has concluded, and now the story moves on with the seventh volume.

4. The last addition was the newly-introduced, mysterious character who tripped on Allen's body by chance. That event first came in the manga as a flashback, but I won't be telling in which volume occured due to spoiler reasons.

Well I cling to the standard belief that the main character can't die or at least stay that way for long. Either they will find some way to save him (which is slightly doubtful since he's been pronounced dead). Or he is going to rise from the grave or be ressurected somehow. With all the religious connection to the series it isn't out of the question.

When Allen is back and I will just assume this not having manga knowledge. He will have to deal with what happened during this stretch. The failure to save Suman, the destruction of his innocene and arm, and simply how he is going to move forward. Failing like that after giving everything you possibly can is hard to handle.

Right now can only hope Timcampy will be alright. Chaos was right. Allen is going to make Lenalee shed some more tears that's a definite.

It was quite grisely though-sort of the "Lets watch Allen suffer and die" episode. (The fact that I know what happens next sorta helps)

Everybody more or less assumed that Allen would somehow survive... But how ?

P.S - If I'm right about the preview of 57, two big (Or at least, they're big to me) revelation would occur.

After watching the Raw its nice to get some dialog. Besides the obvious with Allen (there is no point in mentioning it again) one of the things that shined a ounce of light in this episode in a few words Allen spoke even when faced with death.

Make no mistake Allen is soldier and beyond his compassion he is willing to fight and die if need be for his friends and his belief. Allen stated that as long as everyone is there there is still hope. Thats Allen having enough faith in his friends to carry on with out him if need be. Allen's character really shines through here even though this episode was meant to be dark even if the blackest of night if you look hard enough you will find light.

Many viewers have expressed how Allen is never rewarded. I beg to differ from that opinion. There are many types of rewards and for Allen his friends and general public safety is reward enough from him. But I will also say Allen has built up enough good Karma for 10 life times. Self sacrifice has its own rewards and if god truly exists in the world D Gray man he wont let one of his most loyal and needed warriors go with the battles is so far from being won.

Sumans innocence was recovered and i think that it is sign. Its going to be a long week i cant wait to see what 2 revelations are reveled. Poor Lenalee i hope to god she does not get to see Allen in that condition i think she will mentally break for good. Im think Allen might be back sooner than expected given that the name of the next episode is Loss Reunion.

Yeah I've got one of those rare skills of remembering things that most wouldn't see as too important. Or maybe the lasting memory you've left to the world is trouble for girls.

No clue how Allen is going to survive or come back from death if he actually dies. The rules of the main character dying before the series is over not withstanding. Even the OP helped out with showing Allen losing his arm and showing up with a shiny new one. Unless the series decides to throw us for a loop and make Kanda the main character .

Do wonder if Suman's innocence will link up with Allen down the road. Would be something to carry what drained Suman and tried to kill him into the future battles. But it would be carrying another reminder. Though it will all depend on him not being dead.

Well, that was just...wow. Tyki has been incredibly badass since his first appearance, but in 56 we get to see him in full glory. And Allen? Enough good karma for 10 lifetimes indeed - there seems no end to his suffering, but he never lost his courage or his dignity. Even Tyki recognized a fellow warrior when he saw one.

WHich is why i like Allen so much forgive my language but hes not a bitch or a coward. Anyone who fights to the death for what they believe and in the process still has dignity to worry about his friends even while death is knocking on his door is a comrad i would want to fight beside.

I'm gonna stick with my thought that it might have something to do with Suman's innocence --- both being the same type and all, though i'm don't know how it would come about the two joining.

As for ep 56. One of the best manga to anime adaptations episodes I've seen so far. Perfectly animated; voiced; the atmosphere. Not to mention the added scenes(anime original) that didn't destroy the mood/story of the manga.

Some LenaleeXLavi moment huh? Now im even more excited about future events, I know the manga has portyed Allen and Lenalee's relationship a little bit different in the anime but i always thought there might be some type of love triangle going on between the the 3 though its more implied than actually shown.
