Before I comment on the ending, I want the translations of Ein's last thoughts. I think that they will affect my final verdict quite a bit. However, no matter what happened, I don't see that Nitro+ "ruined" anything at all. It's the logical consequence on what has been going on till the very ending. It only deprives the viewer of any remaining sugar ^_^;

So Reiji is standing there still swearing the same thing that there is only one promise left that he had to protect out of allll the promises that he broke. Then swearing that he will one day take back Elen's REAL smile. After that short monologue of Reiji's before he got shot, Elen's last thoughts were:

"That alone is enough for me to live on. Just that."

Basically, the feel of the ending is more like "Happy Ending" with a big question mark in the end. Because if Reiji "did" die from that shot, they implied that Elen will eventually follow because her only reason to live will be taken away. Granted, they didn't show anything conclusive and since this is anime, noone's legally dead to me until I see the lifeless body, or the coffin. XD

Reiji survived multiple gunshots for who knows how. If Bee Train wanted Reiji to survive for a new season, they could get away with it with that kind of ambiguous shot.

But if you go ahead and think they all got screwed in the name of "Requiem of the Phantom" then

As soon as? Most likely well before as I've mention in past posts. They are a large organization while Elen and Reiji are only two people. They might have even gotten the information from Scythe Master the first time around as he'd know all of it. Inferno would be pretty silly to not investigate the past of the targets they're tracking. I'm going to stop now. Brick walls are hard to talk to and fairly boring.

Maybe it's because the studio placed too much emphasis on the melodrama for Cal that you were turned off by it. I also prefer the VN over the anime regarding their portrayal of Drei since she was a more well-rounded character and made a much more convincing villian.

They have survived until now only because their only purpose to live was to kill, they were always on guard. But here they got all relexed and completly lost any sences of a killer.

Why are people even discussing this? Cal would have never killed Reiji. Like people pointed out in the last 30 pages, she wanted him to know she was alive, she wanted him to suffer for "abandoning" her. She never planned to kill him, just Elen.

Likewise, Reiji could have killed anyone he wanted to, but he didn't. Ever since Cal's mediocre death, it was like brilliant in one scene then mediocre in the next. BeeTrain fucked things up and dwelled on it and made it even worse.

Now that I think about it, I'm not really angry or anything about the ending, I was at first but I got used to it now. It surprised me, but didn't leave an impact on me, like previous anime's like Gungrave.

Also, for someone who asked about this ending...

Someone said there isn't an ending where Reiji dies in the game. Well, you're wrong =)

It's called The Woman in the High Castle:

Reiji chooses to accept fate and allow Claudia to shoot him, and helps her by pretending to try and shoot her. Reiji ends up dying in Claudia's arms, telling her that she needs to live and get back all the things stolen from her, and to take revenge on Inferno.

One year later, Claudia has hooked up with the new No.2 man of the Gambino family, and is slowly manipulating both him and the family for her own purposes. However, she still keeps the .38 special cartridge form the bullet that she shot Reiji with, and can't seem to get rid of it or forget what she did that morning in the Hangar. As she stands at a window looking down at the city below her, she vows to become stronger or she will lose to someone like her previous, merciless self.

Like I said in my post before, If they were going for an original, I would have wanted something like this...

Reiji and Elen get married, and they also spend the night together, I don't care if they do it in the church.

Reiji meets Cal and have a showdown, not the stupid duel like in the anime. After some struggles, Reiji finally has the advantage and finishes Cal off, while he mourns her death.

Elen finishes off Godoh's men, then Reiji joins her and they have a showdown with the Numbers Sisters. They finally kill them, Elen finally reaches Sycthe and kills him, breaking the chains once and for all.

Elen finally remembers her past, they go to her hometown and just as they were about to start a new life, Reiji gets killed by a passing cart.

Elen mourns Reiji's death and finally the feelings of anger and hatred builds up on her, she storms Inferno's
headquarters looking for McGuire, she kills Inferno's men along the way and finally faces off against McGuire, she shoots him multiple times, and then throws him out the window, falling to his death.

Some time after, Elen discovers she's pregnant and decides to live for Reiji and the child within her. She decides that the nightmare is finally over and that she can live a normal life again.

Timeskip, 5 years later, we see a grown up Elen, visiting the graves of 2 people, Reiji Azuma and Cal Devens, she puts flowers on their graves and with her hands holding together(praying or something), then she gets up, and we see 2 children near her, praying as well. They seem to be twins, 1 boy and 1 girl. Elen grabs their hands and tells them....

"Let's go...Reiji...Cal..."

Tragic and happy at the same time.

Exactly, it is the only reason why he lived till now. Cal cared for him no matter how hurt she was. But if she really wanted him dead, he would be dead back then and show would be far shorter and you could say that we would have exactly same ending.

But instead of some dude in carriage, we would have some chick on motobike. This ending might have looked a bit better only because he was killed by some hotty on bike instead of some old geezer on carriage.

I thought it came out of nowhere, but there was the comment of the head of the organization, as he watched the bubbles in his glass, that there was something for them yet to do. Can Elen live on with her memories of Reiji, as she said was enough for her? Maybe. And maybe she will be eliminated, too.

I sympathize with the idea that the cart would have been hard to set up so quickly. But perhaps there was someone on the bus with them. Then at the next town he was able to arrange a cart and come back. I think there was in fact more time of them standing in that field than was shown. But in any case, it is a bit of a stretch.

Nevertheless, the music should have been a clue: pretty down music through that whole scene.

However, that cavil aside, the feeling of the whole last sequence worked for me.

And Takagaki Ayahi's acting, in both the rooftop scene and in the final scene, was outstanding. Definitely prizeworthy, in my opinion. Top "newcomer seiyuu" of the year.

I cant help but to think through all this you've completely missed the message of the series and only focused on the killing and death. There is more much more to the circumstances surrounding Reiji then what you have made it out to be. If you hate the guy hate him after all he did do terrible things. But dont oversimplify and cheapen his story nor that of Cal's. Try looking beyond what has been presented to you and im not sure where the rant about god came from but this is just an anime a work of fiction call down a little. Its a lot easier to die for your sins then to spend your life atoning for them. Well at least you liked the end.

Not only did Mashimo get his “bloddy Kirika”, but he also managed to pull off a real film noir ending this time. I thought they went for a Cerulean Sky-like ending because they didn’t have any guts. Well, they did. I’d be happy if they had gone for the Cal ending, but this “Requiem” ending is fine with me, too. It perfectly embodies the dark and wrongful setting of the story.

....If Reiji really had to die, couldn't they at least let him and Elen (assuming that she was killed) die a cooler death? They go and kill everyone in their path and finally manage to get to Elen's hometown....... and then they get killed by a passing cart. I mean c'mon, even Scythe had a cooler death than that. At least extend the death by a few minutes, and instead of a cart, have 20-30 assasins come out and shoot at them. Then let them have a gun battle for about a minute or two and then have one of them get shot and die in the other's arms. Then the other goes beserk and kills about half of the men before getting shot and dying looking at the others face on the floor. Now THATS a real ending. Who cares if it's more realistic having them die like that. SINCE WHEN WAS BEING SHOT 7 TIMES AND STILL SURVIVING REALISTIC? SINCE WHEN WAS A GIRL DODGING MACHINE GUN BULLETS REALISTIC? AND PLEASE TELL ME SINCE WHEN WAS A 14 YEAR OLD BECOMING THE UNDERWORLDS GREATEST ASSASIN REALISTIC AT ALL???!!!! IF YOUR GOING TO BE UNREALISTIC BEETRAIN, BE UNREALISTIC TILL THE END. ok so, so far all we have is pure speculation on the ending, correct? does anyone know for sure that the flower pedals were poisonous? someone on a different forum also suggested that ein might've shot reiji, i initially eyed the comment with skepticism, but then i remembered what she whispered when she killed scythe.. "i will soon follow", something along those lines, whether that counts as a hint from a narrative standpoint that it was a planned suicide, i don't know. i know a good portion of people use this forum to vent, but i rather not indulge in another's person's emotional interpretation since i have my own, and listening to wild rant based purely on emotion simply degrades and dilutes my own. so, there's been no official interpretation of this except rumors and speculations so far, yes?

by the way i think there is a manga version currently coming out if i'm right, and maybe that will give more detail to the ending scene.

Elen would have had to ingested dozens of those petals before they would kill her, and that's IF they were toxic to begin with. They look like pansies, corn-cockles, gentians (which are very common in Mongolia), or geraniums (also common in Mongolia) to me, and those are far from being poisonous.

If Reiji can survive multiple gun-shot wounds, then I can't believe that a single petal of a common flower could kill Elen.
