Can't really speak for anyone, but since it's been so long since I watched the 2006 episodes, that they didn't really have any impact for me on my opinion of the 2009 airing save for the way they link into episode 00 and Live Alive(which I should probably mention, but I indeed did consider, which positively helps Sigh as I mentioned in Sigh V discussion. ). Though this week, I did start rewatching some episodes for the entire series with a friend that I introduced Haruhi to (including some of EE lol). But if I were to express my opinion about the 2006 airing, I will probably post it in thatthread.

But I hope you can understand how I can rate the entire 28 episodes (series as a whole) differently from what I felt from the 2009 airing. And my reviews are always unfair. Though admittingly it does seem totally insane to have 3 separate numbers for one thing.

Yo ash ketchem, i'm really happy for you and i'mma let you finish but

Haruhi had the most creative implementations of filler episodes of all time.

Let's look at the whole picture: there was 14 episodes in the first run, non-chronological. The second run was 28 episodes. The second run was chronological, though we all know about the Eight-week nose dive.

The main plot line in the first run was Kyon figuring out that Haruhi had the power to manipulate reality (Melancholy I - VI). The other episodes (Someday in the Rain, LIS, Day of Saggitarius) are filler. They are smaller chronicles of their misadventures. By airing the first run the way they did, it was captivating to figure out how the cast got to those points in the plot line. The ending is better viewed as the climax for the first run, as it is relatively close to the middle of the chronologic order of the first run. To make it interesting, they stretched out Melancholy I - VI, shuffled the filler episodes in, did a little dance, and finally watched the audience shit their pants.

Second run.

Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody. Ok, cool.

Then it ultimately turned into the biggest tease. A new relationship was formed between the animation and the audience. We got pissed. Everybody was at least a little angry with the Eight-week nose dive. I was angry a bit at first, but as soon as I convinced myself to be amused by it, the ending to Endless Eight was wonderful. It may have been a waste of budget and time, but it was another way to fool around with filler. They probably had everything planned out from the start. Azns are good at math, so they allocated their budget to decent looking E8 episodes, and they (should) have a pretty penny for the movie. Sighs took a step froward to prepare Haruhi/Kyon relations for the movie. It did everything that it was supposed to do.

Every week on Thursday this summer I commuted into Boston for my full time job, and Haruhi aired right on my lunch break. So I had my Turkey sandwich and the familiar babble from Endless Eight. This show has unconsciously become a part of my life.

tl;dr

10/10 I'M A HUGE LOSER

Personally when the 1st new epi came out(bamboo leaf rhapsody), it was a new refreshment, and thus i didn't care how that episode turned out to be... because i just wanted to see some new haruhi epis.

but then comes E8 and airing of nearly 8 identical episode, which just really dropped this series' enjoyment. if this series ended with E8, i'd give it probably a 4 or 5/10. however at least i enjoyed the sigh arc (eventhough haruhi was really mean to mikuru due to lack of common sense) a lot, and boosted my overall view back to 7/10.

so yeah i'll just give it a 7/10 mostly thanks to the sigh arc. if E8 was done right i'd easily give this a 9/10.

I can say that even with that huge black hole in the series that I'll never bother watching, I enjoyed Sighs enough to have an overall fairly positive opinion of the season as a whole, which would be something above a 7 but not quite a 7.5 so.... I'm rounding down.

I give it a nine.
If I wasn't already familiar with Haruhi I'm sure I would have rated it differently, this is definitely a sequel in that you need to already empathise with the characters.
But from my POV this has been one of the few series this year that I unequivocally enjoyed, and I also liked the amount of controversy it stirred up, which topped the debate over the episode ordering of the first series.
Nevertheless, Haruhi2009 wan't untainted joy. The OP is an acquired taste which I am still acquiring. And the artwork isn't as polished, it looks a bit rough at times (all of KyoAni's work these days seems to have lost the air of visual perfection it had in Air and the first Haruhi series). But in the end, I have to say that I am now looking forward to series 3, and feel confident that there will be one.

---------
Edit:
I've just been reading this thread and realised I misunderstood, for some reason I thought the poll was just about the 2009 series (ie. the new episodes) and not a reflection on all 28 eps. I would have given it a 10 if I was voting on Haruhi overall.

Casting my eye over the other comments, I definitely disagree that half the first series was filler. Just because they didn't form part of the plot of the first novel doesn't make them filler. They are short stories in their own right, culled from later novels, so they are just as much part of the canon as anything else. The fact that they were interspersed into the main plot was just a device to make the series end with a bang not a whimper. Of all the 1st series, only "Someday in the Rain" had filler "vibes" in that I found a large part of it somewhat boring. But AFAIK it is also canon.

It's also presumptios to say "Everybody was at least a little angry with the Eight-week nose dive". I wasn't, and I know many others weren't either, but we learned to take time out because of all the total crap that was being posted including shameless spoilers for upcoming episodes from those who had seen the raws. I myself ended up avoiding all anime forums (or at least the Haruhi threads) until the end of Endless Eight because it was not Haruhi itself that was the problem, it was shithead moaners who kept revealing that the cycle was still continuing and thus spoiling each episode for the rest of us. A large part of the enjoyment of Endless Eight was the tension of the "will they dare string it out another week.... surely it's going to end this time or viewers will revolt". Sadly this was spoiled by revolting viewers!

Anyway, despite some of the episodes being somewhat spoiled for me in this way, I still managed to enjoy them all and didn't begrudge any of the Endless Eight iterations.

Ahhh... Haruhi is so great! But, like most people, Endless Eight did bring it down. Obviously, it was repetitive! Same thing OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER! -_-' I got tired. And it took up most of the "renewed" version's episodes! Imagine how much Haruhi we cudve had without the Endless Eight! Moving away from the Endless Eight, it ended too fast!!!!!! I was expecting more Haruhi!

Well, thats my rant. Wheres yours?

I thought the original series was average. I hated Haruhi's personality, Itsuki and Kyon pissed me off, while Mikuru and Yuki were "ok". After this season, taking endless eight into consideration, and especially after hearing Itsuki and Mikuru's "versions", I hate all the characters alot. So 1/10 from me <3

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Extended First Season

In 2006 Kyoani’s Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya took the anime scene by storm. By 2009 Haruhi was an established name and the relaunch with new season 2 episodes received a mixed reception. What is the score after seeing the two seasons? I marathoned both seasons in chronological order in two evenings in search for an answer .

Impression
The second season is not a standalone series and should really be seen as an expansion of the first season rather than a separate entity. In fairness, the original 2006 season is quite unbalanced. The broadcast order improved the 2006 version by spreading the key Melancholy arc out over the season and ending it on a high note with Melancholy VI. In the chronological order, the story reaches it’s climax too early and there is a sense of missing information for the latter events. For example Haruhi’s surprise turnaround in Live Alive does not make much sense without seeing the events in Sigh.

Adding the two seasons together offers a surprising improvement in the overall flow of the story. The extended first season feels far better balanced. The introduction is clear and solid with the full Melancholy arc which establishes the characters and sets up the plot, then a few episodes that focus on character interaction. Endless Eight kicks of the second part of the season, Sigh builds up the tension between the factions in the SOS-dan, ending with the The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina. Live Alive and Days of Sagittarius show the new, slightly more compasionate Haruhi. Yuki’s character receives more and more attention during the second part of the combined season and I assume that something will happen in the upcoming Disappearance Movie (haven’t read the novels). The story winds down gracefully in Someday in the Rain. Already enjoyed that episode a lot in the 2006 season but it makes far more sense at the end of the extended season. It shows off the character development in both Haruhi and Kyon and their strengthened bond after the events in Sigh without either explicitly acknowledging it.

Endless Eight

Everything worth saying on the impact of this controversial arc on fans has been done to death in other threads so I will limit to the extent it influences the combined season. E8 is a massive block and it slows down events to allow a focus on details. Story wise it effectively cuts the season in two and starts the slightly darker second half. For those who do not like the idea of watching the eight episodes again, it works perfectly fine as a three part story capturing pretty much all story elements. I’d recommend either the second, fourth or fifth episode for the middle part as these offer the most visually. If you are interested in animation techniques, each episode in E8 seems to emphasize different visual elements and the being able to follow the gradual evolution of the art style is pretty unique. E8 ep2 for example was the first s2 episode where CG light sources were used extensively again, E8 ep4 focused on backgrounds (clouds), E8 ep5 on color use and E8 ep7 on still shots.

Animation
The quality of animation has improved in the 2009 parts, motions are more fluid and the characters take on a wider range of expressions as can be expected from a progression in animation techniques in the time between. There are differences; the color palette, backgrounds, character designs and CG effects have changed. Also the total quality varied a lot per episode in season 2. BLR and Sigh I were the worst of both seasons. Very basic colors, poorly detailed backgrounds and little to no CG effects like the added light sources and Kyoani is known for. Just compare Melancholy III to BLR for the scene at Yuki’s apartment. The colors are not changed in the artificial light in BLR and the background lighting is simplified.

The 2006 version made better use of CG lighting; the colors were changed to reflect artificial light at night and the applied filter added to the atmosphere. I’m tempted to say that BLR and Sigh I were rush jobs as there were some superb S2 episodes as well. E8 episode 5 and Sigh III and Sigh IV were beyond anything seen before in S1. Particuarly the talk between Yuki and Kyon after leaving the restaurant, the compilation of summer events in E8 ep5 and the shrine scene with Kyon and Koizumi comes to memory.

Colors

In general you can say the 2006 episodes had a more subdued colors palette creating a more realistic natural look. The 2009 episodes use more primary, saturated colors quite similar to Clannad and can be called more atmospheric. One exception is at the end of E8 episode 2, the scene at the batting center till the end, they used the same subdued colors as S1 so it suggest a deliberate style choice and not an inability to recreate it.

Character designs

For some reason the character designs for the second season have been altered. Shoko Ikeda is the main character designer for both seasons, she adapted the original designs by Noize Ito for animation. The 2006 designs were long legged with short torsos and relatively wide heads especially on the girls. For the 2009 version the proportions of the faces were altered; the width was reduced and the line art for the jaws no longer consisted of a single curved line, instead receiving an angle change halfway. The eyes were slightly altered as well. To compare:

Furthermore the males received larger eyes and made to look younger and less bulky. The torsos off all characters were heightened, the hips have become more dominant and the legs shortened and finally the feet were reduced in size. There is a resemblance to the K-on! anatomy but Ikeda never worked on K-on!, both the designs for K-on! and Lucky Star were adapted for animation by Yokiko Horiguchi, so it may be just coincidence. I like Haruhi and Kyon slightly better in their 2006 forms, but Mikuru, Koizumi and Yuki’s designs were definitely improved in the 2009 version.

CG effects

A key strength of Kyoani has always been using digital effects to manipulate light and color. If I look at the 2009 episodes it took them three episodes to get back to their normal standard. BLR had only basic effects, E8 ep1 was an improvement, E8 ep2 was very experimental and after that episode, average quality jumped (with Sigh I as exception) and resulting in the previously mentioned gems of E8 ep4 and Sigh III and Sigh IV.

Direction

The directors of the 2006 season used more original camera angles, were more creative with stills and had used background shots more effectively. S2 was more conservative in that respect but having more animation time and a higher pace per episode might result in different choices that I can’t judge. In general I think the 2009 season was lacking in consistency regarding quality but when they got it right, they really got it right as these examples show:

Plot

The real strength of this anime is the basic premises of a world revolving around the life of a single individual, and who must not be allowed to notice this. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is more than just a high school comedy. It’s clever and down to earth sci-fi of the best sort. The anime has a way of hiding upcoming events in plain sight, only to realise this message in hindsight.

Haruhi and Kyon are great characters whose respective flaws draw them inevitably together. Haruhi is a caricature of the natural achiever and homo universalis, a person who has the potential to change the world but lacks the focus and morality to make a difference. Kyon is the opposite, the noble, socially gifted slacker with a conscience who is headed for a life of mediocrity and boredom before being rescued by Haruhi and becoming her moral guardian. They save each other from themselves, and reluctantly start to develop feelings without being willing to acknowledge them.

Impact and revised impression

I value anime that after rewatching retain their impact or even improve over time. Haruhi Suzumiya is still a fairly recent anime but definitely found a place among other anime I keep enjoying time and time again like SDF Macross, Urusei Yatsura, Seikai no Senki, Evangelion and films by Oshii and Miyazaki. Haruhi still suffers from the internet hype surrounding it, but I don’t think it will take too long for that to die down. Hopefully this very nice anime will soon be judged on its true merits instead of gimmicks.

As for a final judgment, the combined season is better than its parts, the main storyline has become more consistent and balanced and the characters have gained in depth and development. The varying quality of the second season coupled with a not completely successful change in character design is a slight minus, though Kyoani still has the magic and I am looking forward to seeing the movie. Hopefully a real second (or third depending on pov) season will follow after. For me the show is still the most enjoyable anime of the last 5 years so I rate it 10 out of 10.

ARRRRRGGGGG! I was gone for 5 months with almost no internet so I just got around to watching the new 2009 episodes this week. I tried marathoning this series (which was easy to do with the 1st one) but bogged down by episode 5. After that I only watched 2 episodes a day until the endless Endless 8 arc finished. Oh how painful it was to watch. I wanted to pull my hair out in frustration. I was bored to tears. It might have been better watching this as it came out 1episode/week, but I seriously doubt it would have helped. Oh how I came to hate this series and its ever repeating loop. I wanted to shot Kyon so many times by the end; Care enough already that you've repeated the last 2weeks 15K times and be bothered to do something. But it wasn't really Kyon's fault and he only was a scapegoat for my wrath as it was the series director that I really wanted to burn at the stake. As he is the only one involved in this series that caused it to fail in any way. The animators did their job as did the VAs.

And its a real shame as reading the novel on this arc was enjoyable The few episodes not related to E8 were excellent and E8 would have been also if they'd have kept it at 2-3 episodes total. The animation quality was good and consistant as was the voice acting. Sure each episode was a little different which I'm sure took some work, but the differences were not enough to keep repeating the same story interesting. You NEVER make something that makes people feel bored or even hate the end product, but that is exactly what the studio did this time around for me by dragging out E8 for that many episodes. Usually the complaint is a studio rushes through something too fast, but this is the first time I've seen them go to the opposite extreme like this. Did they only license certain books and couldn't be bothered to spend more money on licensing a few more this time around or something?

I challenge anyone to marathon the entire E8 arc through in one sitting and not feel bored or frustrated and still want to give the new episodes a 10; actually I challenge them to stay awake that long assuming they are actually watching it with their full attention. I'd give the non E8 episodes a 8 or 9 and the E8 episodes a 1 which gives an average of like 4 for the new episodes, however the extreme pain of E8 makes me want to give it an even lower score. However, if I consider the 1st series along with this, I'd give everything 7 even though I thought the 1st series on its on was a solid 9. And that's a shame considering what an excellent story they have to work with.

I "marathoned" it each week(except the first one, obviously). Because I wanted to. Can't do the 10 thing, though, as BLR is an utterly boring story.

So, you kept watching episodes of something you did not like, to the point of hating the whole series. Of which most can be skipped without any effect on the total storyline. Not to mention you at least had the option to skip, compared to people who watched when it was broadcasted. That's rather impressive.

The animation quality wasn't consistant at all, it varied a lot, did you really watch it or just read a review? Nothing personal but this post just reads like a random Sankaku E8 hate comment. The S2 episodes just fill the gaps in the continuity before Disappearance.

Already did, just check back one post. It's no problem to watch if you like it. E8 is about 3 hours in length, that's no more then a long movie or an average football or baseball match. Both of which can be more repetative and boring.

Yo. Did the E8 marathon. Found it enjoyable. Certainly a bit more enjoyable than watching super-deformed Kyon and Loli Haruhi BLR. Much of the E8 enjoyment comes from Sugita's acting. Every episode, he turns in a fresh performance and he carries the whole arc. It will be fascinating to see how the English ADR people choose to handle Endless Eight (assuming that Haruhi will be dubbed. Given the present direction of Western anime distribution, this is a huge assumption.)

And, as has been pointed out, if you choose to marathon the 28 episode proper first season; Endless Eight works well if you watch the first and last episodes of it, plus one or two from the middle. If you want the short story turned up to 11, watch the last episode of E8.

Otherwise, it does very well in its intended role of spacing out the two major plot arcs of the 28 episode season. The 28 episode first uber-season also gives us the proper context for the upcoming Disappearance movie.

BakaRanger - Just so you know, dude, there are people here who agree with you. Your own views are very close to my own, and I do think that watching (and enjoying) all of E8 in one sitting would be a challenge to your average anime fan.

KyoAni's presentation of E8 was excessively repetitive, in my view.

Let's hope that the Movie makes up for it.

I haven't quite marathoned the whole series as of yet but when I have time and motivation, I will. I did enjoy seeing the differences in each iteration of E8 week by week. I've tried to marathon E8 but gave up partially because of the episode plot similarity.

I admit I marathoned though it this week not quite in one sitting, and enjoyed the vast majority of it thanks to the small changes that were amusing at some points, and only being a little bored with it in the middle, but not terribly since I watched 5/8 of it then had to break to eat, and then watched remaining 3 and the arc did caused me to give the series overall including that a 9 rather 10 since I thought the original series, time travel episode, and sigh arc more than made up for it to still receive a high score.

actually, i already did. it's not that boring, and it's just like rewatching your favorite episode again and again, only it's not your favorite episode. besides, it's kinda... interesting? to see the small changes in details, so i'd say i spent most of the time watching focusing on those.

I found the random changes in mikuru's hair style, and the different yukatas that Haruhi picked out the most amusing xD.

Have watched only 1st season and here is my impression... HORRIBLE!
Shout and hit me as much as you want but this was probably the worst show I have seen! Although I think Onegai Twins were worse... I didn't finish those series...
Anyway back to Haruhi! The characters are plain and boring, only main guy had some actual brains out of all. Without all those time travelers, alliens and so on it might have been much better!
The only part that I liked was the detective part on the island. Everything else is not worth to be mentioned... seriousely what do you all like here?

The anime is basicly about a spoiled brat which everyone spoils even more! Atleast Kyou had guts and brains to put that idiot on place from time to time!
The end of the world will come if she is not pleased? Are you seriouse? And if she will decide to start a war out of boredom?! They also will follow?

She did have some positive moments but over all she is nothing more but a spoiled kid who needs a good punch on the head!

Here, I've said it. Do with me whatver you want, I don't care.

The only reason why I might take a look at season 2 is because of the part where Kyou finally lost it and was about to knock her! Wonder if that had helped her... doubt it...

I have to sort of agree. I don't hate The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. And I can understand why people would love it. And I've also studied enough philosophy to know what's going on. But seriously these types just aren't for me. Comedies with no actual plot or anything are never gonna enter my favourites, even if they do make my sides hurt, because that's just not what I'm looking for. In any case, i didn't think it was that funny anyway. The first six episodes were boring really. I didn't know whether or not I was meant to laugh or take it seriously. The episodes after that were way better, but I've seen funnier.

Yeah the characters weren't that great. Haruhi was unbearable. Koizumi was Blandy McBland the Blandest man in Blandland. Nagato was okay. In fact I actually kind of liked her. Mikuru, not so much. Yeah I can understand why she was so weak, but eh...So to be honest, the only character I actually liked was Kyon. But the group had none of the cohesiveness of an actual gang of friends like in Toradora! for example. Koizumi for example, barely interacted with Haruhi at all.

No, I haven't watched season 2 yet. Is it actually any better?
