Fate: *From inside* Don't trip, Vivio-dear!
((We just got about 9 inches of snow here! that's like a freak storm, because before this, the most snow I've ever seen was like 2 inches and I thought the world was ending ))

You aren't going to write anything. I absolutely forbid it! under no circumstances will you open up Mircrosoft word on your computer (or whatever you use). That's final, and will brook no argument. You just can't write any fanfics. At all.

RB, you can just write one sentence. Really, it's not a big deal, right? Then, you know, you might as well finish that paragraph.....then just finish that idea, don't want to lose the flow....then just that scene there, no rush.....and look, you're nearly at the end of that chapter, who knew?

Home Life: Heart of Gold
Spoiler for Heart of Gold:
Kyouya ended the last set, twisting his torso around his movement fluid and fast and with the last strike at the imaginary enemy he ended the forms. He looked to the side sensing eyes on him and was surprised to find not Miyuki nor Nanoha but Nanoha’s best friend, Fate. It occurred to Kyouya Fate was a foreigner in every sense of the word, not only was Fate not Japanese, she wasn’t from Earth.
“Good evening, Fate-san.”
“Good evening,” she returned politely, “Excuse the intrusion.”
“I don’t mind. I think Nanoha’s still out doing the grocery with mother.”
Fate took this in with a nod and a frown and Kyouya saw Fate’s red colored eyes wander to the shinai. “You use two swords?”
“It’s the signature style of the Fuwa-ryu,” he answered with a nod. Nanoha mentioned Fate also uses a sword in combat. Even before Nanoha's revelation Kyouya already suspected Fate was an athlete or a martial artist, it was in the way she moved, but Kyouya never suspected his sister’s nine year old friend was a trained warrior too. Come to think of it, he never thought his sister would become a warrior. She was always so clumsy in sports and declined learning kendo. “Nanoha told us you also use a sword?”
“Yes, although its a little different from the swords in this world.”
“How so?”
“Would you like to see?”
Kyouya nodded, “If it’s no trouble.”
“It’s no trouble,” Fate assured and took out a gold metal triangle from her pocket.
“Get Set.” A robotic voice announced. Kyouya registered his surprise with only an eye blink and nothing else. Nanoha already showed Raising Heart to him once. There was a flash of light, a brief sound of machine parts fitting together and suddenly Fate held a black staff with a formidable looking axe head.
“Zamber mode,” Fate commanded. Again there was another flash off light and this time the sound of metal gears shifting and in place of the axe was a—
“Big sword,” Kyouya remarked.
Fate smiled, “It is, yes.”
“Doesn’t it hamper your movement?” Kyouya asked, one professional swordsman to another.
“At first but I got used to it and… I’m a little stronger than I look.”
Kyouya suspected Fate was understating even though the blade was made of light, the hilt and the handle were not. Still… “In the long run a sword that big would be detrimental in a long fight.”
“You’re right,” Fate acknowledged. “I’m trying to work around the limitations of this mode but I’m still figuring it out. How does your two sword style work?”
“Would you like to learn?”
Fate jerked in surprise and looked over her shoulder. Kyouya hid a smile, Fate might be a warrior mage but his father still had a trick or ten up his sleeves.
“Shiro-san,” she acknowledged. The Sword-Staff thing vanished into a small triangle. “Good evening.”
“Good evening, Fate-san. I apologize for startling you.”
“It’s alright, Shiro-san,” assured Fate.
His father entered the dojo and Fate vacated her position by the door. “Would you like to learn?”
Fate looked uncertain. Kyouya kept silent curious how this will go.
"I won't mind telling you the basics of the Fuwa-ryu's twin kodachi style," his father continued.
There was a moment of silence and then, "Kodachi?"
"Its what we call the short sword," explained his father. He walked across the dojo and pulled the kodachi bokken from Kyouya. "We're not the only school that specializes in the twin kodachi style but it is what we're most known for."
"Why do you call the style Fuwa-ryu?"
Kyouya slipped away, he knew the story and he saw the look on Fate's face and knew she was hooked. He left to change and when he finished he went to the living room just in time to hear Nanoha's voice.
"Hey," he greeted. Kyouya watched Nanoha looked around, her brow furrowed. He took moved to the kitchen to get a drink and returned to see she was still standing there looking puzzled. It was just about time to leave for Midori-ya for his shift.
"Uh... Onii-chan," Nanoha began. "Is Fate around? She mailed me--"
"Yep," he answered.
Nanoha looked at him. He drank his juice. After fifteen seconds Nanoha pursed her lips and Kyouya finished his juice. "Mou..." She stamped her foot on the floor, Kyouya noted the slight dent on the wood. In a couple of years, if she kept up with her mage training she'd be able to crack concrete, that was the Takamachi strength right there. "Onii-chan, where is Fate-chan?"
"In the dojo."
"Thanks, onii-chan," Nanoha said then ran off in the direction of the dojo.
Kyouya shook his head, then called out, "Don't run inside the house!"
Nanoha turned her head briefly and stuck out her tongue at him.
*
The sounds of fighting reached Nanoha's ears, instinct born of a year worth of battles made Nanoha clutch Raising Heart when she reached the dojo Nanoha stopped short. It wasn't everyday Nanoha witnessed her father crossing swords with Fate.
There was a beat then Fate jumped back and with narrowed eyes rushed her father, her father met Fate's attack with a strike, which Fate easily blocked but then Nanoha saw her father's second bokken appear slicing through the air Nanoha gasped but at the last second Fate twisted around and the bokken sang above Fate's head. If Fate had been slower the bokken would have left a nasty bruise on Fate's forehead. Fate raised her right hand and Nanoha's eyes widened, she knew that move, it was Fate preparing to unleash a spell before Nanoha could say anything Fate flexed her fingers and instead of a spell she balled her hand into a fist and struck. Her father dodged the blow and leapt away.
They stood apart, watching each other with hard, serious expressions. There was a look in her father's eyes Nanoha had never seen before, not even when he and onii-chan fought and just as sudden his demeanor changed and he dropped his arms to his sides and smiled. "That was very good, Fate-san."
As quickly as her father's demeanor changed, so did Fate except now she turned red at the compliment, "Thank you, Shiro-san."
"Hello, Nanoha," her father said, greeting her with a smile.
Fate turned her head and smiled."Nanoha."
"Hi," she returned. "Dad, Fate-chan. I'm sorry for interrupting."
"It's alright, we're finished, " her father answered. "I only wanted to see how Fate was with a sword."
"She's very good with a sword, you should see her battles with Signum-san!"
"Nanoha!" Fate exclaimed, sounding mortified. Nanoha only grinned.
"I'd like to see that someday," her father remarked. He crossed his arms and frowned at Fate, "Because I had a strong feeling you were holding back on me, Fate-san."
"Wh-what? No--"
Her father merely raised his eyebrows.
If it were possible Fate turned even more red, as red as her eye color even; not for the first time Nanoha mused how easily Fate blushed. Nanoha's grin widened. "You can't pull a fast one on dad. He used to be a ninja!"
"Bodyguard," her father corrected.
"Sure you were, dad."

Since it was the weekend and they had no missions Fate had permission to sleepover. After cleaning up she and Fate met up with Suzuka and Arisa, Hayate and her Wolkenritter had a mission for the Ground Forces. Arisa declared the next outing it would be Hayate's turn to treat all of them, they laughed knowing Hayate would take this in good humor and somehow turn the tables on Arisa eventually as the night wound down she and Fate returned home and found that her mother made them hot chocolate.
Eventually she and Fate turned in for sleep they held a few idyll conversations that eventually petered into a comfortable silence. Fate slept on the cot on the floor, Nanoha had insisted they share the bed but Fate assured her that sleeping on the floor was no trouble it left Nanoha uneasy but Fate did seem comfortable she supposed after sleeping on trees and on the ground a cot and a wooden floor seemed downright comfortable. Nanoha glanced at her friend and saw Fate was still awake and staring up at the ceiling seemingly deep in thought, Nanoha caught on to her friend's mood and kept silent she knew Fate would talk when she was ready.
She heard Fate stir, Nanoha rolled to the side and looked at Fate. Fate's red eyes glinted in the dark. "Fate-chan?"
"Nanoha." She liked how Fate sounded out her name. It was like the first time Fate tried saying her name, a mixture of wonder and a catch of hope, like she still couldn't believe that when she called Nanoha would answer. It sent a warm feeling through her and made her want to reach down and hug Fate. "What's it like to have a father?"
Nanoha blinked, taken aback by the question. It wasn't something she thought about although she did almost lose her father at one point but in the whole Nanoha never really thought about it. Her father was her father, but she should have known Fate would ask. She's had mothers (one incredibly bad one and one very good one) but she never had a father. Fate looked at her expectantly and once again Nanoha was reminded about the way Fate looked up to her. Nanoha hoped she won't ever let Fate down or be crushed by the weight of Fate's expectations.
She closed her eyes and tried to put it to words. "It's like... its like having a solid wall to support you. He's firm but gentle and I know even if we don't talk as much, I know he'd always support and love me. Back when I was smaller dad was badly injured and all that time I only knew him as a man on a hospital bed. I knew he was my father but nothing more than that."
"What changed?"
"It was the week after he returned home from the hospital, I didn't know him all that well and I guess I was a little afraid of him but... I remember the most is that one day I was running around and mom was telling me to stop. I guess I was having too much fun to stop and then suddenly I crashed into--" she paused then continued. "I can't really remember what it was but I knew I was terrified but just like that, even though he was in bandages and limped when he walked dad was there. He came between me and the object and even though he was in pain he didn't look it instead he asked me if I was alright. I was so ashamed I burst into tears right then and all he did was hug me."
There was a silence and in the dark she could see Fate's eyes flicker back to the ceiling, Nanoha scratched her cheek and let out an embarrassed chuckle, "I'm sorry, I guess I really didn't answer your question."
"No, you answered really well," Fate replied, rushing in as if she were mortified that she made Nanoha think she did anything less. "I was just... I was trying to remember my father-- or, well, Alicia's father but. I can't remember all my earliest memories were about mother and Linith and Arf but nothing about my, Alicia's father."
Nanoha went still at the mention of Precia.
"I guess, maybe that's why mother--"
"No!" Nanoha turned fully and balanced herself on her elbows, looking down at Fate's startled but troubled eyes. "No! Just because you don't know or remember who Alicia's father was doesn't mean your less than Alicia. You're your own person, Fate-chan and just because you didn't have those memories it didn't give that woman any right to treat you as she did."
"Nanoha..."
"I like you the way you are, Fate-chan, don't let other people tell you other wise."
Fate reached up and touched her hand, "I won't, thank you, Nanoha."
Fate's hand was warm in hers, she squeezed Fate's hand in return. It occurred to Nanoha again that all the battles and pain she went through was all worth it if it ended up helping and protecting people like she did with Fate.

Quick comment: It's "idle", not "idyll" .
Anyways, onto more important stuff....always glad to read about the Takamachi family ! I loved Nanoha's interaction with Shiro, and her recollection of Shiro as a kind-of stranger is a very interesting perspective! I like the new angle you took with it, opens up lots of new interpretations of Nanoha's interaction with her family .
It does seem to explain where Fate got the idea for Riot Zamber, eh?
Fate's changing her words from "my" to "Alicia's" father was really heartbreaking....on the one hand, she's making a distinction between herself and Alicia, which is good, but on the other hand, she's also kind of putting herself down (which Nanoha was good to catch her on! ).
*facepalm* I knew that! I knew I shouldn't have done just given this one quick pass before posting. I'll make sure to fix that when I archive it
I do love writing about the Takamachi family I find them very interesting and how Nanoha's family keep her grounded. Sure, she's the Ace of Aces in Mid-childa, but to her family she'll always be Nanoha and I kind of think they also adopt everyone Nanoha brings home

Heh. I thought it was interesting that now Fate's a dual wielder and the specialty of the Takamachi is dual wielding as well. It's not far off to think she got the idea from interacting with other members of the Takamachi family.

Ever since Precia revealed the truth about her identity, Fate has always been accepting that she is not Alicia. It's interesting that she never claims to be Alicia but at the same time she's established her own identity and as you noted, it also does seem she's putting herself down which Nanoha is all: 'Oh, no, you don't!'
