One reason probably is that the art is old school much like Batman Brave and the Bold, which we have the campy looking blue Batman from the 60'-70's design as where in Shin Mazinger sticks to the old school or ORIGINAL designs of Go Nagai, rather than an update on the design of Shin Mazinger Z.

But the plot, story and action pack scenes makes up for it as well as the new and old characters introduced. If there is a series dedicated to the legacy of Nagai and his works as seen there are many references, Energer Z was piloted in the manga by a girl from one of Go Nagai's work called the Abashiri Family, Tsubasa is a character from Violence Jack and other characters which made appearances.

Hi every one, I just want to say that this show will disappoint the fans of the original Toei series.

As well as we know it had no real plot and it was your monster of the week kind of show so basically it was more action oriented rather than a story teller, but that’s alright it was a legend on it is own right because it was the first of it kind and gave inspiration for the others robot shows.

See the real reason why the new show is very different because it try to give us mazinger in a new prospective or should I say go nagai prospective as he have a completely different take on his creations as we know he wasn’t satisfied on how Toei were handling the old series, so all the 70’s shows including grendaizer were not showed how go nagai wanted them to be seen.

And yes this new mazinger may seem a bit strange to non go nagai follower as it has go nagai touches all over it from its character design and story telling so unless you are a real go nagai fan you wont enjoy the show it is as simple as that and you should look for another series to watch. And it is the closest thing you would ever get to nagai vision.

Finally mazinkaiser has no real plot simply because there was no original plot for him he was created in the super robot wars series because banpresto wanted a new modern look for mazinger and that’s how mazinkaiser came to bee. So obviously when they wanted to make a show about him they marketed him as being a powerful robot and of course what better way to do that than doing 7 short OVA’s loaded with action and they really did a great job in doing so in my humble opinion.

I doubt that Nagai is all that involved with the new show really, he's not on the script or direction. Though I will say that the old school style is just spot-on and it does captures his wackiness/insanity very well. I don't know if I can call myself a "real" fan of his (I prefer Ishikawa) but I do like this show a lot.

Even though that go nagai isn’t directly involved the show still takes some ideas from his old mazinger manga and the z mazinger manga so even though it has some new ideas it is still more faithful to nagai vision than the 70’s show.

Of course isn't he the director but what I am saying that he is taking the show in a away that resemble nagai style. Same as you say that lord of the rings has Jackson touch but it still resemble the original book.

As for Shin Mazinger Z it is Go Nagai's art style, but they've have included a dark deep plot on the new origins of Mazinger Z so it won't be the same as the old 70's one. Going back to BatmanBB, we don't see Superman and Wonder woman as much as Sayaka and Boss being focused in Shin Mazinger, it tends to focus on lesser known characters of Nagai and develop them which the series has done well so far. Most especially GamiaQ3 she died in the old series and the Mazinkaiser OVA, glad they let her live here.

Not only is Giant Robo Imagawa's best work, i rate it as one of the best works of all time. A must see for everyone who's enjoying Shin Mazinger Z. I have no trouble believing that you'll love it.

While I am enjoying the show I still think that this manga is more awesome I hope we can get an OVA out of this manga.

episode 4 - Grandpa rides a rocket punch
episode 5 - Kouji goes insane
episode 6 - The only weak episode

I'm not sure how could anyone be bored by those...
