Great Makoto episode!
In fact, it's so Makoto-centered, they didn't even have time for even a cameo of Ayu and Shiori, which may not bode well with their respective fans.
Hm, KyoAni isn't shy about dropping hints (or answers for that matter), are they.
Was Mishio (great voice acting by the lovely Sakamoto Maaya, by the way) that talkative in the game and the previous anime adaptation?

So it looks like they will indeed wrap the Makoto arc in the next episode, so the other girls will probably get the same attention in terms of episodes.

They won't wrap it up in the next episode just yet judging from the preview, as the "process" looks to be just beginning to get serious.....

Right form the start of the episode, we cut straight into the christening of Piro. Kyuichi's 'glow' was funny to behold.
It's funny how that Mai actually points him to Amano. I wasn't expecting this at all. And now the secret to the name of Makoto finally comes out.
(seriously, where'd Haruhi go? Kyuichi...)
Good cost-saving measure on the part of KyoAni with those stills. Very dramatic at that too.
People are going to go crazy trying to identify the manga. I can be sure of this. Marry huh...
Right after this... chopsticks... oy.
So, he sleeps with her, and now this entire story finally blown itself out in the open. That fox... looks so much like Kuon from Triangle Hearts somehow.
Now I finally reflect on this. Life and memory, what price to pay for a miracle huh...

I wonder how Akiko will feel... come conclusion of Makoto's story...

I was expecting more of a decline in Makoto's health in this episode but they are slowly doing it rather than all at once.

Yeah trying to figure out the manga sure will be funny it looks 70's style sort of.

Makoto's route made me feel empty when I finished it in the game, and now it's doing it again. The killer is how she gets sweeter and more dere towards Yuuichi as she becomes weaker...

Some of Mishio's advising roles were taken over by Mai in the anime, actually. And she's really just mysterious and quiet, not silent.

At this rate, 3~4 episodes will probably be the number for each heroine's route. I don't think Makoto's route will end next episode, but it probably will on episode 10.

The melodrama starts in episode 8. Yuuichi pretty much lost control of his surrounding and starts to be swayed by events happening all around him. He has now change from the initiator (of all troubles) to the responder (respond to events).

KyoAni showed quite a few original stuff, namely-
1. Yuuichi's first love!
2. Makoto's fox form
3. A very very sterotypical view of shoujo manga
( Who drew that manga! That is such an unbalance, unfair, subjective portrayal based solely on extreme prejudice...yes I am kidding ^_^;;

I never thought of this when I played the game, but seeing how small Makoto is compared to Yuuichi when they are on the bed, I cannot help but think "Yuuichi don't you dare to make a move on that innocent sweet little girl! It's a crime!"


When Nayuki was busy molesting the cat's head, I was actually thinking what happened if she accidentally snap the neck bone into half ^_^;;

KyoAni used some interesting camara work in this episode, from false preception focus to abrupt scene changes, you get a feeling that the end/tragady (for Makoto at least) is near.

And yes, not only does no one does snow like KyoAni, no one does grass field like KyoAni. The wind+grass effect was fabulous.

And here it comes, what started the internet meme "Sad girls in snow". I chuckled 1 time when Yuuichi realized she wanted him to read Shoujo manga but it's hardly a laugh. Makoto Makoto Makoto. I love how 2 girls aren't in this episode at all and Mai and Nayuki are relegated to cameo roles.

I almost cried when I saw her looking at the wedding dresses and again when she started remembering or at least felt that something important happened to her in the woods. And we finally see and know the Makoto spoiler of spoilers.

Yay for Foxy Makopi! I can't wait to share pictures of her now once people have watched the subs.

And this is why Kyoani's older looking Yuuichi and Sugita's voice acting does wonders in bringing the Kanon story to life which I (and others) keep emphasising that this choice is sound. Recall the whole interview with the director how he said Yuuichi is like a fatherly figure looking over the girls? This episode is a great example of that. For no moment did I feel that Yuuichi was going to make a move on Makoto, instead in every single instance he felt like a guardian protecting something so fragile, even though things is slowly getting away from his control. Yuuichi's physique and his tone just much further enhances this theme in Kanon. And this whole thing all ties into the one of Key's trademark writing style - that of "family" and "bonding". And this is what makes Kanon not your standard harem story. Now for the veterans that had seen Toei Kanon, try substituting Toei Yuuichi in a situation like this and it's painfully obivous that it simply won't work. Toei Yuuichi does not convey the maturity that is needed to correctly portray the real essence of Kanon.

I repeat again, they didn't bring Sugita because he is "Kyon" and that they want to use that as a sales point in Kanon, but because Yuuichi is this type of character from the get go and Sugita is the right man for the right job.

Total agreement. This episode really, really worked. I didn't recognize Maaya's voice, but I sure noticed how good it was.

The subs are coming out really slowly tonight...one can only imagine how it's getting harder and harder for our valiant subbers to find an untainted RAW to work their magic on.

<- of course, Makoto here, being the brat that she is, is screaming "Where's my SS-Eclipse sub!!!!!!!!!!!"

That's one of the reasons, thanksgiving vacation is the second, but the most important one is that there was alot of _tough_ typesetting work to do. I know that our typesetter blew 6 hours on AFXing and Photoshopping this episode, and that he had to interrupt his work for a few hours of sleep.

The first encode-worthy raw popped up after 12 hours too, so there wasn't too much time left, for all the rest (you can't typeset with AFX/Photoshop unless you have the final workraw, or all colors will be off).

Anyway, we're out. And still in the 24h timeframe.

What a satisfying episode. It just felt that Kanon was overall good before it, but its real theme is now being shown and it gets a lot more interesting. Bring on the sad girls in snow.

I really wonder how Makoto's possible vanishing would be explainable to Nayuki and Akiko. Maybe if Yuuichi was generally more serious, they might believe the fox story, but right now it would hardly make sense. Time will tell (not so soon, I hope... although it's just as Mishio says, we're getting more and more attached to her and it'll just hurt more in a few episodes).

There were also some nice extras in the episode, like the cuteness overload from Piro and a certain fox. Getting to hear Maaya Sakamoto was also great. Will it get even better, I wonder...

Finally, the "naki(cry) game" factor cames out.

Props yet again on KyoAni to turn the classic game into a classic anime.
