noitaminA wanted a big hit,
Fuji wants ratings,
aniplex wants profits

Sadly, yeah the 1 hour isn't really goin well (both ratings and sales) being beaten by the TBS block

I wish noitaminA wasn't on break for several weeks until the fall shows start. I wanted my WAIT FOR xx.xx trailer today.

Two reasons, I'd guess:

1. Because ratings don't even matter that much anymore. At this point, I'm not even sure the current ratings should even be considered as placing noitaminA in 'danger' - sure, they still do count as Fuji TV still places "normal" advertising during the broadcast and nothing too anime-related, so some profit's still made there. But it's most likely turned into a small share of the money compared to disc sales, which is what noitaminA has come to bank on like your average anime production, and which hasn't worked out too badly for the past few seasons (leaving this summer aside, I suppose). Even though a major hit like AnoHana has yet to be recreated, Aniplex must certainly still be trying (noitaminA does maintain better visibility than your other average slot, in spite of the dwindling ratings), and as long as there'll be producer demand for the second timeslot, it'll be maintained. We might have to start getting worried the day Aniplex has a streak of 4 Natsuyuki Rendez-vous-level sales.

2. I think they're aware that going back to a half-hour timeslot wouldn't even work to bring the ratings back at this point. They've tried going back to "noitaminA-like" shows for a bit, which didn't work out at all, in the sense that ratings haven't moved one bit. Going the "otaku-pandering" way (sorry for the ugly shortcuts, but they get the point across) even for a bit was an irreversible choice, it would seem. Maybe it'd work if they announced huge adaptations such as, say... Sangatsu no Lion, or Gin no Saji - but then creating a new timeslot to start afresh might just work better.

Beaten by the TBS block? It's doing far worse than noitaminA these days. NakaImo, KoiChoco, KMB, Acchi Kocchi, all flops. Maybe you meant MBS's Animeism block?

Great post. It's basically a case of how once you commit to one path, it's very hard to go backwards. While it might be better if the decision was never made to begin with, once it was made, that was it.

Yeah, but MBS wouldn't be a good comparison at all, since they're completely different territories.

So far for that slot and region, noitaminA is still the strongest. Even though it has slipped sooooo much.

All good points. I guess I was thinking more, why didn't Fuji try switching back immediately after the change caused a rating crash for the Tatami/Five Leaves block. Of course it's too late to do anything about that now. I wonder exactly how things degenerated from the clear vision noitaminA seemed to have for a number of years to the flailing about it's done since 2010. I suppose losing touch with what originally made something special is an ever-greater danger the longer something lasts.

Of course, the only reason I'm really concerned about ratings, and sales to a lesser extent, is because I'd like to continue to see the kind of josei/seinen adaptations noitaminA has traditionally supported. Even if this timeslot goes away or gives up on them, hopefully there'll be somewhere else that carries them in the future.

At best, after selling rights to other parts of the world, it might have made its money back, but it's not a profitable investment.
Kids on the slope flopped.. Japan wasn't ready for it yet I guess. How the hell can someone so good flop? That's why I strongly doubt that this will make it either. This genre/type of anime isn't really what's selling nowadays. Hopefully Psycho Pass will bring change in this.

Yeah, there is no doubt that any of those would prove to be a massive success ... for that given season anyways, and then it will be up in the air to what will happen with the next programing.

That's really the issue, they could make and bring out as many shows as they want, be them adaptations of huge titles or Originals with A-list staffs, but they can't really guaranty that the same people from the past seasons will still be watching when they bring it out due to how diverse the viewership of the slot is. Sometimes I can't help but think that is noitaminA's greatest strength is also it's worst weakness.

For starting a new time slot, I honestly think that wouldn't work as well at all. Anime no Chikara got the axe only 3 shows in when none of them managed to be a hit, so I would imagine that the pressure for success with a new time slot, where it has no history, brand power or record of past hits, would be far greater than with noitaminA, which even though it's struggling, is a proven quantity and can justify, even to a little extent, putting in enough faith and effort to try different things.

For better or for worse, I think what they are trying to do here and sticking with noitaminA is the best course of action, even if the decisions themselves end up not being correct.

If there is one particular reason, it would have to be that the business model the slot was running on wasn't very practical:
Quote:
The income from the TV ads is insufficient to pay the high production cost of anime. Moreover, the economic recession demands a short-term recovery of the investments. "The ratings of Noitamina anime are pretty high, but the drop in the DVD sales was worse than we expected."

...

[Fuji TV producer Yamamoto Kouji] admitted they are still repeating trial and error for the establishment of the business model.
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=79794

I do think that some of it has to do with the idea that the idea that the slot had been ''contaminated'' by slipping into more typical anime shows (or to be more exact, including elements from popular anime into their shows and programing, since outside of maybe BRS and GC, I think that they had been at least trying to balance things between both components) had made it lose a bit of it's brand power, but from the looks of it they really didn't have much choice in the matter. They needed the money to balance things, otherwise it wouldn't have made much sense or been practical to continue the block any longer if they were running a loss with it. In some ways, the decision for the 1hr increase could be seen as an alternative solution to them going into catering to otaku's, but when that didn't pan out (and in fact made things worse) they ended up having to swallow the bitter pill and try and go down that road further.

I also want to see the slot survive for that reason as well, but even if it didn't I don't think that there is going to be much worry about seeing josei/seinen adaptations in the future. They will still be made, but the unique thing about noitaminA was that it gave them a place to air on. Even if it goes away, there will still some who will attempt to keep the idea going.

Personally though, I don't think that it's as bleak as it looks. At the moment, the producers look like they are grasping at straws and trying their best to make sure the slot survives, but even then I think that there is a lot more life in noitaminA to see it go away anytime soon.

The lengthening of the block more or less coincides with the addition of Aniplex (whose main concern is the DVD/BD market) as a major stakeholder. Besides, reliance on TV ratings proved to be unfeasible.

noitaminA is currently split into two halves - one primarily backed by Fuji TV and the other (typically the better funded one) primarily backed by Aniplex. There's crossover in terms of planning and financing, but it seems that each partner generally aims for a dedicated half-hour.

I don't really know maybe it was MBS... but that's not kanto...Oh well
the main stockholder of TBS(and tv tokyo) is MBS if I'm not mistaken?

Yeah, it seems noitaminA is indeed divided into 2 parts... One normal and one aniplex show...

I guess fuji tv is to blame since they're not being "nationalistic" or anime is just not profitable nowadays. Being beaten by Asahi and NTV...

I think.building a new block.is not a good idea... i mean look what happened to Noise...

After seeing these sheets I can say that I don't think we need to worry much about the anime character designs not carrying Amano's style. It looks much better than any of the magazine spreads.

The talk segments of the Psycho-Pass premiere screening event held on Sept. 29 will be streamed on Niconico: http://live.nicovideo.jp/gate/lv109195092 - the people who'll be there are Motohiro Katsuyuki, Shiotani Naoyoshi, Urobuchi Gen, Seki Tomokazu and Hanazawa Kana.

I'm kinda torn as to whether I want to stream the event or not. Urobuchi also tweeted that he's also kinda conflicted on how he's going to handle the talk event due to this announcement. The people who attend the event will be watching the first two episodes before the Q&A, so they'll expect questions to be answered about things in those episodes. But anything they talk about would be spoilers for the people tuning in on the stream, since the episodes themselves won't be broadcast.

Hmmm.... might have to give it a miss if they're going to be spoiling stuff.

at least he doesn't look so much like Kiritsugu now, unlike when the first concept art was released :P

(seriously, crazy hair, dead eyes, suit, gun, and most importantly Urobuchi. I had major Kiritsugu mother's day flash back when i saw it)
