Which fan? the Heatsink fan on your CPU, Case Fan or Videocard fan?

We've got a decent sample so far of PC's and it seems that the "average" PC specs is CPU is a high end P4 (3.0ghz up) or a low end dual core processor. 1 gig ram seems to be fairly standard and XP is o/s of choice. Put's my rigs right about on average at stock. What does surprise me is the people posting their PC specs have some very very nice high end gear, and what seems to be a very very high proportion of laptops

1280x720 doesn't look to be a major issue but 1920x1080 really limits people viewing to about 40%-50% of the pc's.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like the same fan that turns on for a few seconds whenever I turn on the computer or whenever my cpu usage goes up for an extended period of time.

Then that's usually the HSF (Heat Sink Fan) that sits on top of your CPU usually with most recent motherboards and BIOS once your CPU hits a certain temperature, the fan will kick in to high speed.

Ran a free 3D Mark thing.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 2.0 GHZ - thought I had it overclocked to 2.4. Must've set it back at some point.

2 EVGA GeForce 7950GT SLI overclocked to 600MHZ Core.

Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS. I only use headphones though.

2 GB OCZ DDR 2 667 Ram.

ASUS P5N SLI

WDC WD1600JB
WDC WD2500JB - I thought I had two of these.

HANNS-G 19" Widescreen @ 1440/900

Coolmax CXI 500W

Cooler Master Cavalier Black

Oh and XP and 2K3 server dualboot.

I can't do jack about this computer's specs until basket comes back (..someday) because I'm hopeless at meddling with the innards of the CPU... or rather, I'm dead scared to because I have nobody to guide me and don't dare to damage a single thing because I won't have the money to get more new parts

This was a preassembled computer actually (blame my stupid dad for insisting we had to get one because the previous one, which basket assembled, died but of natural causes, not because he assembled it!) - had a much better fan than the other one but came with only 256MB of RAM which was hopeless if I wanted to work on large pieces in Photoshop... or watch even 1280x720 videos at all. Programs were running very slowly and even my mum was fed up with it, so basket finally decided to hell with the warranty and threw in 1 extra GB of RAM He also installed the HD from the old computer (120GB compared to the 70GB this came with, so now a total of 190GB, which still isn't that much)

And now stuff is a lot better. 1280x720 vids are still kinda jerky but 1024x576 is completely smooth. However, perhaps due to overuse or lack of cleaning or insufficient ventilation, it overheats quite fast nowadays, I've had it crash on me while encoding stuff and recording drawing processes in Photoshop using CamStudio have to be done carefully

I don't know if having a Pentium 4 has anything to do with it though. But that's not worth answering here so I'll just stop rambling and vainly wish I had more RAM anyway (and an A5 tablet, instead of A6...)

I can play 1080p video perfectly fine, without a second of lag in Quicktime,
there is a slight pause when it first loads up when playing with VLC or Mplayer,
but after that it works perfectly fine also.

Main rig:
Aspire (now called Apevia) X-Plorer case
Forton Source (FSP) Saga 450W PSU
EVGA NF47 nForce4 SLix16 Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice
1GB Dual Channel PC3200 Corsair XMS TwinX RAM
2x EVGA e-GeForce 7600GT CO in SLi
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS
250GB WD Caviar SE16 SATA300 HDD
80GB Samsung ATA133 HDD
Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM
Lite-On 16x DVD-/+RW
Acer AL1917 19" LCD
Dell M991 19" CRT
ViewSonic OptiQuest Q95 19" CRT
(Triple Monitor Setup)

Laptop:
Compaq Presario C551NR
Intel Celeron 440 (1.86GHz)
Intel 945G Chipset/Integrated Video
1.5GB DDR2 667 RAM
80GB Toshiba HDD
Conexant Audio

TV Rig (Soon to be retired):
Generic Case
MGE 400W PSU
Albatron KX400 Mobo (oddly enough it has the VIA KT333 chipset)
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
768MB PC2100 RAM
EVGA e-GeForce 6600GT
40GB WD Caviar ATA100 HDD
500GB LaCie External USB2.0 HDD (take a wild guess at this drive contains)
Radius PrecisionView17 17" CRT
Sanyo 27" Flatscreen CRT TV

I watch my anime on the TV rig but it can't handle HD .mkv's so I download both them and either a lower res .mkv or a high res .avi. It can still handle 1280x720 .avi's just fine. I plan to replace either the TV or main rig soon. If I replace the main rig then the current one will lose a few parts to the new (like video cards until I can afford to go 8-series) but for the most part will remain intact and will become the TV rig. Otherwise I'll use my old laptop's processor (Sempron 2800+) and order a socket 754 barebone and build a new TV rig. Before that laptop fried, it handled HD .mkv's perfectly so I know the Sempron has enough power to handle HD fine.

Planned Main Rig replacement:
Apevia X-Jupiter Jr. G-Type Case
Probably stick with the 450W Forton PSU at first then maybe upgrade to a 600W or better later
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe nForce 590 SLi mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor
2GB DDR2800 PC6400 Corsair XMS RAM
Stick with the 7600's for now then upgrade to an 8600-8800 later
Stick with the Audigy2 ZS for now then upgrade to an X-Fi later
probably another 250GB HDD or larger
swap the Samsung in since it's My Documents.
same monitors

Home computer:
Dell Dimension 8100
P4 1.3Ghz
256MB RAM
32MB Geforce2
Win XP Professional

Work computer:
anonymously built
P2 333Mhz
128MB RAM
S3 Trident 4MB
Win 2000

My colleagues get Core Duos, but that's because they're artists. I only use email, Firefox, excel and Word.

I don't watch HD, since watching MS Igloo I realized I'm reaching my limit. I used to be on the cutting edge though when watching Kodocha VHS rips on Real media.

Yet another way to brag abo-, ehem; I mean, display my hardware.

Gaming/1080p PC
Antec Performance One P182
Functional 550W PSU whose name is forgotten
Abit AB9 Pro
Core 2 Duo E6600
2GB Dual-Channel pqi PC2-4300 (big mistake, I know)
250GB SATA-II Western Digital Caviar
XFX 7600GS 256MB Passive Cooling PCIe x16 (OC'd 535/460)
Windows Vista Ultimate x64, Ubuntu 7.10 x64
En Route
BFG 8800GT OC 512MB PCIe 2.0

I just found out today that I had a 50GB ext3 partition just sitting there with Ubuntu on it, but I forgot that I re-installed Vista's bootloader long ago because of GRUB's ineptness of booting Vista. I lol'd hard. Also, this is the only computer in the house that can play 1080p h264/multichannel AAC.

Network Storage/720p HDTV PC
Emachines T3065 (YEAR 2000 BABY. WOO!)
AMD Athlon XP +3200
1GB Stock RAM
160GB ATA Hard Drive
GeForce 4 MX Integrated (unused, VGA)
Radeon x700 Pro 265MB AGP (primary, DVI)
Windows XP

I tried doing Ubuntu on this machine, but an HDTV as the primary monitor just won't cut it.

Parental "Bills and Internet" PC
AMD Athlon 64 +3800 (?)
MSI Something.
2GB Kingston Value PC-3200
Radeon 9250 128MB AGP
Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Should switch the last two computers, eh? Well, my parents want pretty Vista. So that's out of the question.

Since I have entirely too many computers (consequently, PG&E (or if I'm in Sacramento, SMUD) just lurrrrrvs me), I'll just list the assets I have which I actively use to play anime (including storage machines). Hang on, this will be a bumpy ride!

Set-side entertainment machine (also used at the local anime con for primary anime viewing room):
Generic whitebox (though that's something of a misnomer since it's all black!)
  • Intel Pentium 4HT 3GHz, 800MHz FSB
  • 1GB RAM
  • WDC SATA 80GB HDD
  • ATI Radeon X1300 AGP, 256MB RAM
  • SoundBlaster Audigy using Creative's drivers
  • Sony HT amplifier, to which the Audigy is plugged in via S/PDIF
  • Polaroid 26" flat-panel LCD TV, plugged into the computer via DVI->HDMI
  • Windows XP Professional
(This is the machine I have which supposedly has a DX10-capable card, but I don't think it's DX10-capable)

Another set-side entertainment machine (also used at the local anime con for secondary anime viewing room, though is mainly a live-action room):
[Gateway 2000 desktop machine (ordinary tower machine; I don't have the model number handy)
  • Intel Pentium 4 2.2GHz, 400MHz FSB
  • 512MB RAM
  • WDC EIDE 40GB HDD
  • Gigabyte AGP video card using an ATI Radeon 9550 chip, 128MB RAM
  • SoundBlaster Live! 24 (for both analog and S/PDIF out)
  • Windows XP Professional

Desktop machine:
Generic whitebox
  • AMD Athlon XP 2800+, 333MHz FSB
  • 1GB RAM
  • WDC EIDE 160GB HDD (for OS, apps and some data, each in their own partitions)
  • WDC EIDE 250GB HDD (for works which require very large files, primarily fansubbing, primarily for grabbing raws and for sound processing, editing and encoding)
  • ATI Radeon 9550 AGP card, 256MB RAM
  • SoundBlaster Audigy using the kX drivers
  • Windows XP Professional
Even though I do view anime on this computer, this machine is more a work machine than an entertainment machine. I use this computer to do my sound editing, processing and encoding along with script editing.

Laptop machine:
Dell Inspiron 9100
  • Intel Pentium 4HT 2.8GHz, 800MHz FSB
  • 1GB RAM
  • Samsung EIDE 40GB HDD
  • Mobility Radeon 9700, 128MB RAM
  • Internal sound system for my own viewing
  • SoundBlaster Audigy 2 NX external USB unit for exhibitions at the local art museum I do every month
  • Windows XP Professional
This machine also goes with me on periodic train trips to Sacramento where I show anime at a friend's place. Using CoreAVC, it can handle nearly all the recent H.264-encoded fansubs I can throw at it.

Older anime viewing machine when Xvid was still the most prevalent format:
Compaq DeskPro EN SFF machine
  • Intel Pentium III 933MHz, 133MHz FSB
  • 384MB RAM
  • Seagate Barracuda Fast ATA 40GB HDD
  • NVidia GeForce MX 4000, 64MB RAM
  • Onboard sound (originally had sound card that's in the entertainment box now)
  • IEEE 1394 card
  • USB 2.0 card
The nice thing about this computer is that the computer has its own built-in mono speaker so I can watch anime with just a monitor. However, most of the time, I tend to use external storage, e.g. a USB or 1394 external drive, or have it hanging off a network. Functions as a spare for the anime con, but I may repurpose this machine to a different function at some point in the near-to-mid term.

Encoder machine (I tend to make and distribute fansubs with it, rather than watch them on it, but I figured it was worth describing anyway):
Desktop machine, encoder machine (Dell Dimension 3100)
  • Intel Pentium 4HT 3.06GHz, 533MHz FSB
  • 1GB RAM
  • Seagate Fast ATA 40GB HDD on system IDE bus (for OS)
  • Two WDC EIDE 80GB HDDs on Promise EIDE controller (the only other place to hook hard drives to are two SATA connectors)
  • Onboard video, using Intel 915 chipset (generally nothing hooked to it; I run it headless and connect to it via VNC)
  • Onboard audio (which IS connected; see below)
  • Windows XP Professional

Fileserver (which doesn't PLAY anime, but it does bear mentioning since I generally don't store anything I watch on my systems):
Generic whitebox (also something of a misnomer since it's silver and grey)
  • AMD Duron 1600
  • 512MB RAM
  • WDC EIDE 4GB HDD (root filesystem)
  • WDC EIDE 160GB HDD (personal data)
  • 320GB EIDE HDD (storage for torrents)
  • Creative GraphicsBlaster Exxtreme, 4MB RAM (generally has nothing connected to it)
  • Onboard sound (not used at all)

And another fileserver machine which only sees action during the con here
IBM PC325 (fileserver for anime con):
  • Intel Pentium MMX 200MHz (No bloody Pro, II, III, 4, 4HT, M, D, or Dual Core)
  • 64MB RAM
  • Quantum EIDE 6.4GB(?) (for OS and swap) and 40GB WDC EIDE HDDs (for storage)
  • Onboard video
This machine allows me to repurpose any of my screening machines at a moment's notice, so long as I have a playlist for that machine stored somewhere, preferably on the server or a removable storage device.

When I'm at home, my most recently-torrented anime is stored on my main fileserver, the Duron described above. Apart from storage duties, that machine also performs the grunt work of torrenting itself, running a VNC server X session running Azureus. I also run IceWM for a low-memory-footprint X window manager.

Both desktop machines described along with two other desktop machines are all plugged into a Yamaha 10-channel, 2-bus mixer so all of them can output sound and share a common pair of speakers.

I have Lite-On drives in all machines except the Dimension 3100 (which uses a different brand; I just haven't replaced the drive) and the fileservers (one of which has a CD-ROM drive I used for loading the OS, the other doesn't have an optical drive at all, just a floppy). I standardized on Lite-On because these drives are insanely hackable!

I realize I need to upgrade some of my gear if I ever hope to seriously play hi-def content, especially anything bigger than 720p.

Anyway, that's my gear for playing/producing/obtaining/storing fansubbage. I have many other machines, but none of them contribute significantly to my anime viewing or fansubbing experience other than MAYBE one of them being a DNS/DHCP server, another hosting my group's site and being entry point for mail, which is stored on yet another server on private IP space, which also doubles as my voice mail box/PBX for my phone line and was my first dedicated anime screening box.
