I wish people would be slightly more specific when asking about suggestions.
Are you looking for any sports anime? Or some sports in particular? Should they be purely comptetive or maybe have side stories (romance or whatever) in them? |

Cross Game is probably the best the genre has had to offer in years even for people who aren't traditionally fond of the sports genre, and I'd amply recommend you to you and to any person out there reading this post. However, you are searching for a series with a high focus on the sports aspect of the series while still retaining excellent character development, interaction and a balanced cast (that is, no overpowered protagonists) I'd suggest Ookiku Furikabutte.

Cross Game.
Touch. Slam Dunk. Ginban Kaleidoscope. I don't think anything else is worth watching, if you meant anime related to real life sports anyway. Maybe Prince of Tennis should be up there too but I haven't watched much of it :s |

Ookiku Furikabutte is probably my favorite sports anime, and the second season will be coming out this spring.
As has been said Cross Game is very good, as is the prior mentioned overdrive. If you're looking for a little more traditional sports anime try Major or Prince of Tennis.

I'll give a nod to Ookiku Furikabutte(2nd season right around the corner YAY!) and Cross Game, oddly enough I'm not actually a huge fan of baseball but still very much enjoyed these 2.
Ookiku has actually taught me alot about baseball For football theres Whistle but honestly I don't think I could really recommned it, it's pretty bad IMO altho I did somewhat actually enjoy reading the manga. eh guess theres Eyeshield 21 for American Football, haven't seen the anime but I read some of the manga and is pretty fun read. I'd recommend checking out sports mangas, loads of them floating about. While yea sure enough it's better on the whole to see sports in their animated form, manga gets the finer details across better.

From a purely sports-focused angle, I think Ookiku Furikabutte is the best. Other good sports related shows, like Cross Game, might be fantastic anime that involves sports, but Oofuri is the show that's great because of how it deals with the sport and everything that goes with it. It will likely cause even the biggest sports-curmudgeon to start waxing lyrical about the joy of team sports. I speak from experience
