Her Crossbow looks incredibly modern for an 11th Century one, especially the trigger mechanism and buttstock. The more historically-appropriate model would be a simple straight stock and a simple lever connected to a rolling nut in the trigger mechanism.

This is exciting. I wonder how Thorfinn is going to solve this. She's a hunter and she should be very well aware of her surroundings. She has the upper hand in every single way. Only advantage Thorfinn has is probably the physical strength and speed... if he gets past arrows he wins, but I assume he wants to end this peacefully. I don't think there is really nothing wrong with the meat. This woman seems to care about people.

We see Hild's past when she was 13. She was very skilled at her age, having help her father design a water powered sawmill and her father was very supporting of her skills much to Hild's mother and sister's chargin. Too bad Askelad's band of Vikings attack Hild's village since they were hired to kill her father. Hild and her father were able to escape where he tells her daughter to remember Christ's teaching of forgiveness before Thorfinn arrives.

I mean, Water-powered, geared, ball-bearing, circular buzzsaw? That's at least 700 years into the future. Hild's a Renaissance Girl on par with da Vinci! She even designed flying machines in her little workshop. That's explains her incredibly modern Crossbow...

I find it interesting that this isn't an usual raid: Its a bounty headhunt. Someone want Hrafknell dead. Why? His shipyard churn out great, advanced longships too eficiently for some other Shipyards? There's got to be some bad blood between Hrafknell and whoever ordered the hit.

Also, If Hild woull join Thorfinn's Crew, He will get much more than a Sharpshooter: an Engineer!~
Wonder what role would her inventions play out if that's the case in the future voyages...

Whoa. Looking back, young Thorfinn was a jerk. The way he told Hild that her father died because he was weak and they live in a hunt or be hunted world was cruel and made her the woman she is now.

Was Thorfinn really this much of a dick back when he was with Askeladd? I honestly can't remember. Seeing him kill a father in front of his daughter was weird, considering he set out on this path precisely because his father was killed in front of him. Then again, the father was the target so it makes perfect sense for him to have no qualms killing him.

Yes. I remember one chapter he mocked a slave girl who gave him food and said he doesn't know or care what life as a slave is. And many chapters later, Thorfinn becomes a slave himself.

Yes, he really was. He had his own reasons for being like that, but it doesn't change the fact that he was callous and cruel. Which is why his character growth is so amazing... I love this story because all the characters, good or bad, are just that... human. They're all so believable.

Neither could Thorfinn let go of his hatred until Askeladd died and he realized vengeance for its own sake is an empty path with no future beyond it. Also he didn't realize it until Askeladd died how much he cared for him, despite also hating him (Thorfinn's relationship with Askeladd is nothing if not convoluted). But forgiveness? While Askeladd was still alive? I could never see it happening.

Unfortunately that realization came too late and by that time Thorfinn was made a slave.

Hopefully Hild doesn't make the same mistake, for both hers and Thorfinn's sakes.

Hild pins down Thorfinn thanks to her crossbow and even quote back the words he said to her before about being "The Hunter or The Hunted". Just before she pulls the trigger, Einar appears.
