Very gory and brutal manga

... with preferably the protagonist doing the ripping of limbs, and not having it done to the good guys.

Obviously, we have Berserk (the only turn off here is that the brutality also happens to the Protagonist's side), I think Bastard! had some brutality... Jackals and Riki-oh are other titles that tend to come to mind. And there's one other but I can't remember its name for the life of me that was very brutal...

Anyways, other suggestions for titles where we have the protagonist (preferably... not so much a fan of seeing the good guys loose their appendages, though I suppose gotta take both the good and the bad) going and ripping people limb from limb and have a lot of blood spewing?

The mc can kill people cruelty for revenge. Pretty dark, but no where near Berserk or limb ripping stuff.

Gantz. Definitely gory and brutal. Though the brutality also happens to the good guys (with such regularity at that ).

And a rather blatantly obvious one, Hellsing OVA(there is no good or bad, just ripping )

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Plenty of people on both sides are capable of ripping people apart.

I'll second Jojo. That being said, if you like dogs, I'll warn you that dogs tend to meet a gruesome fate in that series, and a few good guys have suffered nasty deaths or at the very least suffer nasty wounds. That being said, the most evil villains tend to suffer the worst fates.

There's Hokuto no Ken or Fist of the North Star, arguably the series that created the whole shonen action genre. The hero Kenshiro tends to kill villains in very gruesome ways though he's a straight arrow good guy (not even an anti-hero) otherwise and he is more merciful to more sympathetic antagonists. Lots of heads and bodies exploding in this one. Note that this applies primarily to the original manga. Most of the adaptations have toned down the violence even if they are otherwise faithful to the source.

Shamo - it involves a crazy mc that fights mostly for survival(and for his lust for blood). An example: There is one scene that he was about to die but managed to survive by biting his attacker's ears off. The beginning is a bit disgusting but it gets better afterwards. The main character is extremely unlikable(he killed his own parents) but badass once he fights.

Ichi the Killer - it's synopsis should be enough:

"In Shinjuku Kabuki-Cho, the biggest sin town in Japan, there are two crazy guys. Ichi is a coward and a wimp, but once he breaks into tears, he turns into a human weapon. With great martial arts skill and a blade hidden in his boots, he butchers a bunch of enemies into mincemeat in the blink of an eye. His arch enemy is Kakihara, a yakuza boss who's tired of everything, including himself. Only when he pierces, cuts, and burns his own and other people's bodies does he feel that he is alive."

Vinland Saga, it's in viking period, enough said
But i suggest you wait for another few months (or years?) til it finish the current farmland saga arc, or it could be very frustrating )

If i remember correctly in shamo
Spoiler for manga spoiler:
not sure about the ear part
I would add Vinland Saga, Shingeki no Kyojin, Dorohedoro and Mugen no Juunin.

That's the disgusting part. After that, there is no such thing anymore and it's all about fighting.

Fist of the north star and fist of the blue sky. The main character pretty much tears and blows body parts left and right with the quote, "You are already dead."

I'll second Ichi the killer and Shamo. Both are brutal.

Though I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Battle Royal. IMO, these 3 are all must reads.

Ichi the killer
Battle Royal
Shamo

Question

Try Battle Angel Alita. It's definitely a classic. The artwork is exquisite.
