It may also help the review this thread and see if it answers your question: Seriously, WTF is with all the teen protags in anime?

For shonen anime, target audience. Nuff said.

For late night otaku anime, nostalgia for days of relative freedom, especially in workaholic Japan.

To elaborate further as a rule of thumb people relate more easily to protagonists that are of the same age and same sex. You can usually understand what's the targeted demographic of a show/book/whatever by looking at the age of the main characters. This is not always true, but quite often it is.
Now the majority of anime are adaptions from manga and light novels which for the most part are aimed at teenagers and young adults.

Alongside the "main character that you can relate to" there's the "main character that you like to fap to watch", and here you have a gender inversion. If in the former case you can say: "if it's male it's aimed at males, if it's female it's aimed at females" in the latter it's "if it's male it's aimed at females, if it's female it's aimed at males". You can usually easily tell which case it is depending on how much strong is the focus on the main character's body and look.

The age equation however tends to be somehow the same, or rather a little skewered in accordance to what's the trend in the social context. Women tend to like older men and men tend to like younger women, this is reflected in shows where the main character is supposed to appeal the targeted demographic.

When it comes to Japanese men and especially Japanese otaku, the preference tends to be towards an age category that is lower than in some other cultures and it usually assess around 14-17 years.
It isn't by chance that that's also the average age of idol singers.

I always did find it quite funny that light novels (aimed at teenagers) get translated into anime (mostly aimed at adults).

Obviously this isn't the only medium where this happens (Hollywood does it too,) but it's just kinda funny to look at.

Is that actually true? Anime are aimed at very diverse demographics, from kids to adults, but if you were to statistically calculate which demographic most of them are aimed to I believe teenagers would still win, with young adults close to them.

Light novel wise, yes. Of course, your typical shonen manga based anime are aimed at teenagers, but most light novel based anime is aimed at the older crowd with money to spend (basically similar to the "18-35" demographic that is the ideal TV target in the US) and aired very late at night on school nights. It's like Adult Swim in the US though: the main target may be adults (because disposable income = disk sales/merchandise sales), but teenagers still make up a huge part of the audience and the shows at first hand look like they were aiming at teens.

The light novels themselves are aimed at teenagers, but the anime and much of the merch that comes with it is aimed at adults with money to burn.

One of the other reasons why a lot of teenage protags exist in anime is because they're easier to write and reach a large audience. And it's what most people in the anime industry know the best, since they usually went straight into the industry at a young age (as in, right out of high school) and can't/couldn't be bothered to do research on anything else.

There's a few cultural things involved as well, but I already explained that in an earlier post so I'll just link to it here.

Does allow some stories to be set in more mature contexts though.

Isn't it because most adults lead incredibly boring lives? I mean, when you're a teenager you have the most economic freedom. Some teenagers work and have other ways of legally earning money so they have a large income. They have a lot of free time and can be passionate about a lot of different hobbies. It's more likely for a teenager to have an adventure rather than an adult. Even twentysomethings would need some realitybending in order to let them be the MC of an action packed series. I mean, they have to worry about finishing university without much debt, getting a job, building up usefull connections, participating into this whole circus about what adults should do etc.

that's true, I agree with Nicaea. it seems that when you're an adult you can't even spend that much time on your hobbies, especially if you have life commitments and stuffs >__<

Because thats their main demographic... thats why digimon shows are mostly elementary school kids thats why Ash from pokemon never grew older even though the kids that first watched him now have kids of their own... thats why a lot of other shounen are high school/middleschool kids or around that age...

Shounen, Seinen, Shoujou, Josei... these are the demographics of whatever genre anime/manga you find because these are who they are trying to sell to.

Just a small note: The seinen tag is horribly misleading. I'm not even sure where to draw the line, if there is any.

If you start a chuuni story by your own for the first time, guess what kind of main character it will be?
