I wouldn't be surprised... "bubblewrap" is the new normal for too many things.

The only problem I had with it was you couldn't get "better" with practice.

Correct; note, however, that some other changes to enchanting are also in effect:
  • there are several enchanters, each of which specializes in a particular brand of augmentation - one, for instance, adds poison damage/poison resistance; another, attribute boosts; and so on;
  • they are now among the things randomly placed (or not) in the world;
  • each seems to have a cap on how many times they can enchant a particular item (usually 2, with 3 and 4 being rare)
Further, the game itself is being tuned in response to beta feedback; those changes are elaborated here.

That's pretty cool, I was always looking for one over the other on different uniques. I am guessing now that enchanters will either tell you their specialty or you can at least tell it apart somehow.

Losing all the enchantments on a unique to a 6% chance to disenchant is just plain evil.

Correct; that information is present below their health bar, much like how the special abilities of monsters are presented (see image below).

Spoiler for Reference image:

A hypothetical example would read like this:

Panoosh of the Desert
Enchants Items with Poison

For those of us curious as to what the Runicboyz are up to, they've made 'Not a Blog Redux' into a serial feature of the official forum. Also, another denizen had been tinkering with his beta client for the purpose of showing off some of the Act 2 armor styles (thread).

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages...

No, I can't tell you when Torchlight 2 will be released.... but I can tell you when the world at large will know. That knowledge will be dropped, as they say, at PAX. Along with the current iteration of the game.

According to this site entry, the world at large will know Friday at noon, as well as be introduced to a new trailer... and gameplay from the desert-themed Act 2.

Now, as long as we're here, is anyone else interested in squadding up once the game launches?

Looking forward to this though between real life, writing fiction, work, Secret World, and Skyrim I'm not sure where the time will exist.

I had been planning to start with an Ember Mage for a while, but now that I get to see (somewhere else) the skill tree of the Engineer, I am pretty tempted to start with that class instead.

With about 48 hours to go on the release countdown, the lads and lasses at Runic decided to toss out another freebie... in the form of the original soundtrack. Enjoy!

Am I the only one having problems accessing the official site?

Please tell me that the place didn't go down on release day. >_<

Dunno... I've taken the tack of officially waiting one week before buying into *any* launch of any product. I haven't even bought Borderlands 2 yet

Yes, the site is having problems. I had to go directly to the Runic site and then to their forums to see a thread about it. The links to get the game are there for anyone interested:

http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=33813

It doesn't appear to solve all problems, and people are still reporting issues in that thread.

So... anyone else actually playing this? I have one of each character running, but my Engineer and Embermage are the furthest along. I've seen all the potential player characters from the first game, and the story seems to follow the concept that all three of them had worked together during the original Torchlight.

It's fun, so far.

I'm running on normal, but I probably should have gone with veteran. None of my characters have died even once yet, and my Engineer is level 17. There have been a few bosses that have been moderately dangerous, but not many of them. The first Torchlight tended to have the same issue.
