That's a loss of more than 27 million dollars or 90% of the production budget.

Oh.... wait... Actually though it should do pretty well in Europe. Not $27 million well though.

You're right, but it got me thinking "what does that mean in numbers?"
Looking at french box office numbers, a movie like "The Hobbit" did ~$41 million in France total. Something more niche like "Life of Pi" only did $11 million.. Also the release in france would be a license, Toei would only get some smaller percentage of box office compared to Japanese release. I would think even if it does "massive" the most they could possible expect from France would be another 5 million. Probably much more like 1-2 million and eventually bluray sales...

... Saw it today on screen since it was aired on december 25th in France! Let's have a quick review :
The CGs are good(but not revolutionary...), the motion capture of the faces is nearly average, good action scenes, only noticed Maya Sakamoto who played a second character who have only a few lines(like Aeris in Final Fantasy : Adven Children...)... But alas, the worst part is the scenario(can't do the spoiler tag, too lazy sorry...)... ... But, it's still good to see the old crew back, Captain Harlock even in CG is GAR!!! |

Just watched this trainwreck a few days ago. The cinematography portion of the film gets a B+ from me but whoever wrote the script and came up with the story should be banished from touching a pen again. It was like they spent 99% of the budget on visuals and what was left to a 10 year old to write the damn thing.

Mesmerizing work of Art! The movie was great throughout with absolutely no letdowns.. Most negative reviews come from people too souped up on silly westerns/shonens (the "good guys" always win) scenarios to appreciate this foreign take to a classic space thriller. The whole theme and plot revolves around pragmatism and how reality screws us over hard..everytime.
Do not go into this set-piece with a color-coded mindset/expectations. See it for what it really is. Oh and in real life, there really isn't any "one" good guy to root for.. just 'cuz we've been spoiled by movies to think otherwise doesn't mean we should punish a movie for trying to do something different. Animation: 10/10 (have yet to see something so consistently supreme) Visuals: 8/10 (absolutely beautiful, colorful characters and settings) Audio: 9/10 (music, sound effects and everything in between come off awesome and natural) Voice: 8/10 (same great voicing we have come to expect from Asians!) Characters & Development: 11/10 (yes it was that uber.. as the story evolves so do the people.. them coming out of these hellish experiences changes something about them and their following decisions.. you know like in real life; no one was a blank carbon copy of one another.. possible criticism: the emphasis/gravity of the circumstances/situations isn't always very crystal to the layman's eye.. so high replay value?) Plot: 9/10 (this ties in with the above, insane twists, a binary struggle between tragedy and hope) Pragmatism: 10/10 (reflects our present world in more than one way.. think deep into the themes and you probably won't want to believe it/demise it.. reflects the F***ery of life and sacrifice, the mistakes we make and what we lose trying futility undo. Generally, isn't anything in excess but it sure doesn't shy away from pushing us) .. and that is just the tip of the ice-berg.. do yourself the favour of watching it (..without the bigoted presumptions!) As someone whose only vaguely familiar with the Harlock series, sat down and watched it. Visuals looked great, but fell flat for me a bit personally in terms of pacing/story.
Spoiler for spoilers:
