Spoiler:
Yeah I know. Stupid village.
Also, wasn't Kukuri controlled by Utao? Or is it just a temporary control of Kyouhei to Kukuri? I'm glad that Kyouhei has a plot development in manga unlike in anime that we still don't see anything yet. |

The same village. Kuga and Hyuga are the main family of this village. Quote:
Spoiler for 55:
Don't forget that Hibino was really angry at them because they dared touched her Kyouhei !! Quote:
From what I undertand (which means pratically nothing XD ) : Spoiler for 55:
Yes, it was just temporary for Kyouhei. In the vol 9, it's Utoa who controls Kukuri. Now I have some questions too : Spoiler for Vol 8 - 9 - chap 55:
What is the objective of the old man with Amateratsu ? Why he does that ? It seems related to his past since we saw him young in one of the flashback,no ?. Also, it's me or the japanese gov is involved in all of that ? |

Spoiler for :
I'm going to include some ideas introduced from the anime since the manga is not translated up to that point yet, but probably a seki will always have a link with their doll. It's a fact that Aki was able to take back control of his doll when it had already been assigned to a new seki. Based on the raws Kyohei did the same thing (seize control during a moment of crisis), but unlike Aki he voluntarily gave up his seki status so it's probably only temporary

Spoiler for family structure:
The village is ruled by the two families with Seki's -- the Kuga and the Hyuga. The Kuga family head is Kyouhei's grandfather. Kyouhei's uncle (I wonder if he's Aki's father?) has a son and a daughter, both of which are Seki. The daughter controls the bird-like kakashi. The son is being groomed for village leadership while his kakashi hasn't been shown; the kakashi is named after a water god, which may be a hint to its abilities. Kyouhei's father was recalled from academic life to return to the village. He doesn't have much influence in the Kuga family (after all, he wasn't even allowed to be present at Utao's birth); maybe he's a younger son and has to defer to elders? Quote:
Spoiler for Kukuri:
During the fight against Mahiru's berserk kakashi, Kyouhei takes possession of Kukuri. However, they only realize Utao can no longer control Kukuri after the fight. That's why they had to ship Kukuri back in a van, with the arms disconnected to make space for the passengers in the back (poor Utao and Moyako ) When Amaterasu attacks, Kyouhei moves Kukuri and it becomes clear that he has taken possession. Back at the village, Utao demands Kyouhei return Kukuri back to her. Kyouhei agrees since they want to rescue Kirio, not wreak mass destruction Utao redoes the ceremony with Kukuri and is back in control. Spoiler for Prison:
Kyouhei's imprisonment has nothing to do with fighting Amaterasu. Kyouhei is thrown in prison because he overhears the Kuga elders' plot to take over the village. After the activation of Amaterasu, the village evacuates and the rest of the Hyuga agreed to temporarily cooperate under the Kuga's leadership. Confident that the 2 families' resources will put down Amaterasu, the Kuga elders decide to use the opportunity to remove the Hyuga once and for all. As part of eliminating evidence of their shameful past (the Kuga sold Kirio to the Hyuga because they owed a huge favour for settling a sex scandal outside the village), Kyouhei's cousin (a Seki) is ordered to destroy all traces of Amaterasu. Kyouhei busts in and demands that they save Kirio, reveal the truth to Kyouhei's mom and take Kirio back to the Kuga family. They simply ignore him, but then they catch Hibino eavesdropping. When they threaten Hibino, Kyouhei grabs a machine gun and fires toward the ceiling to create a distraction and escape. Hibino manages to evade in the woods, but Kyouhei is captured and thrown in Aki's former jail cell. Quote:
Spoiler for Japanese government:
Old man Sahei Hyuga? When he was young, he tried to get the Japanese government interested in using the kakashi for military purposes. However, the deal went flat since the kakashi were criticized as having roughly the same power as a tank or a jet but can't be mass produced. Sahei was shamed and retreated in the background until he helped the Kuga clean up a scandal. I guess he wants to use Amaterasu to show the world the power of the kakashi and prove the correctness of his own visions. |

Now, if Kyohei takes control of Amaterasu...he'll be unstoppable. xD (that is, if he can in his GAR mode)

Spoiler for About the family structure:
The cover of Vol 9 has the Kuga and Hyuuga family tree. Aki looks to be descended from the Kyouhei's grandfather's brother branch of the family. Aki's father or mother (can't tell from the name) is the same generation as Kyouhei's father. Aki is the bastard child while Atsushi is the legitimate child. No wonder Atsushi is angry that Aki was chosen to be Seki instead of him.

Chapter 56 is out.
Spoiler for Chapter 56 Summary:
Koushiro sets off to save Kirio despite his wounds. He encounters Mahiru sneaking back in the village and suggests she help out by taking control of Kirio's now Seki-less Takemizaguchi. Mahiru angrily declares she's faithful enough not to switch kakashi's so soon. Koushiro leaves alone. However, Mahiru seems impressed when she learns that Koushiro will be a father soon and he is risking his life for a promise with Kirio. Meanwhile, Kuuko's father is heading towards the village with his partner... Hibino, Kuuko and Shimoyama decide to head to Kyouhei's home which is close to their current location. Kyouhei is in his jail cell, using the light of his cellphone to read Aki's scratches on the wall -- "idiot" "Kyouhei" "kill" Aki is at Moyako's home while Moyako serves him tea... while dressing her best in her recent acquisitions during her Tokyo shopping spree. Aki requests she remove the seal on Kuramitsuha to return it to its full form, but Moyako refuses, worrying that Aki will become a mass murderer again. Kyouhei's cousins and the remaining Hyuga Seki (Mahiru's older brother, the fat one who lost the bid for the next family head to Koushiro) engage the newly revived Amaterasu. Just as Sion (the Seki riding the bird-like kakashi) is in danger, Utao arrives with Kukuri and blocks Amaterasu's attack. "Kirio! Big sister is coming to save you!" declares Utao. |

Spoiler for Chapter 56:
The stage is set. Characters who more or less involve themselves into the Kakashi matter are starting to gather themselves in this arc's central stage: Karakami village. What will happen to these characters? Will Kyouhei free himself from the jail? What will Aki do next if Kuramitsuha regains its true form? Will Kirio be saved or being destroyed along with Amaterasu? What will Mahiru do now that she's back in the village? And finally, what exactly is the thing Kuuko picked up from the ruined Kakashi (Strangely Mahiru called it "Amaterasu")?

I wonder if they will put Tooru-kun in the anime...
But anyways, seriously looking forward to Mahiru-sama's idiotic faces.

Chapter Summaries
Since the English translations are far from catching up, I'll do some summaries.
Spoiler for Chapter 15:
Kirio is beaten by old man Hyuga for failing to capture Aki as well as damaging Takemizaguchi in an unnecessary fight with Utao. Koushiro steps in before things go out of hand and takes Kirio home, saying Kirio is his partner. Meanwhile, rules prevent Kyouhei from entering the shrine to confront his grandfather. Inside, Utao is told that Kirio is indeed her younger twin brother who was given to the Hyuga at birth and raised in secret. Old man Hyuga visits Amaterasu, expressing his desire to find a Seki with the power to control it. Kirio meets Koushiro's wife Saki, who jokingly wonders if he's Koushiro's lovechild. Saki helps Kirio take a bath and discovers scars on his back from years of abuse. Kyouhei accompanies Hibino who is paying respects to her ancestors. It rains, they seek temporary shelter and Hibino asks about Sensei and Aki's past ... Spoiler for Chapter 16:
Kyouhei's flashback to 6 years ago. Sensei arrives in the village just as Aki is being bullied by his older half-brother Atsushi and his gang. Atsushi points out Aki is an illegitimate child and that Atsushi himself is the rightful seki of Kuramitsuha. Aki scoffs in contempt and turns around to leave when Sensei tries to stop the bullying. Atsushi calls out Kuramitsuha to rub in the fact that the kakashi is no longer Aki's, but Aki laughs at his poor control. Kuramitsuha attacks, but is stopped by Kyouhei's Kukuri. Atsushi and gang leaves. Kyouhei meets Sensei and falls in love. Sensei orders Aki to take care of the dog he just saved. Aki runs away with Sensei chasing him. Sensei Senou Chihaya is introduced as the new teacher in the village. Moyako and Kyouhei notes Aki's change in taking care of the dog. Chihaya refuses Atsushi's advances, but is reprimanded by the principal and warned to stay away from Aki. Kyouhei complains to his father, who suggests Kyouhei talk to Atsushi directly and comments that Chihaya must learn the ways of the village sooner or later. Frustrated, Kyouhei storms off and declares to Chihaya his will to protect her. Chihaya thanks him but says she can take care of herself. The village kids are told by their parents to keep away from Chihaya. Chihaya invites Aki to school but Aki states that he has always been alone. "This village is worse than rubbish" says Aki. Spoiler for Chapter 17:
Flashback continues... 6 years ago, a new teacher arrived in isolated Karakami village and was ostracized. Aki and Chihaya, 2 alienated souls grew closer as the days went by... Rumors begin about Chihaya having an affair with a student's father. It turns out Atsushi has been investigating Chihaya and hopes to make a move once the entire village rejects her. Though the villagers realize that the notorious Atsushi is behind the rumors, Chihaya's reputation suffers. No smoke without fire, they say. More importantly, she is an outsider. Atsushi tries to take Chihaya by force, but Aki and dog comes to the rescue and they escape to Aki's home. Chihaya reveals that she did have a relationship with a student's father, but it's not an affair because it's a single parent family. She can never forget the heartbroken look in the student's eyes when he discovered them in bed together. The student ran from home and was hit by a car, but luckily survived. Chihaya lost her job and had no where to go when the vacancy at Karakami village opened up. Chihaya notes that Aki has the same hollow stare as that student and Aki asks if she wants to take out her anger and frustration on him. Chihaya agrees and pushes Aki down. They spend the night together. Aki refuses to leave the village with her, saying he still has unfinished business: to take back Kuramitsuha. Atsushi and his gang return from a night of peeping and run into Kyouhei, who warns them to leave Chihaya alone. "haha, you have guts, but you're just a clown, Kyouhei. Your beloved sensei has shacked up with Aki." Moyako watches from afar at Aki playing with his dog Nono. Kyouhei makes an aborted attempt to confess his feelings to Chihaya, who tells him to always be friends with Aki. The principal fires Chihaya, citing pictures of her and Aki's night of passion. Atsushi abducts Chihaya and kills Nono, leaving a bloody challenge note for Aki. As Aki runs to the shrine, he wonders why he is pushing himself so much for Chihaya. Chihaya lies on the floor, covered by a jacket. Atsushi: "Too bad she is no longer exclusively your woman. In a village full of old people and little kids, it would be such a waste if you didn't share the enjoyment of such a beauty. We'll take good care of her from now on." Spoiler for Chapter 18:
Continuing the flasback, Kyouhei wakes in the middle of the night and sets off, but is seen by Utao. Atsushi says he hated Aki the minute their father retrieved Aki from his mistress. To add insult to injury, Aki had taken away Kuramitsuha which Atsushi claims is rightfully his. "Can you understand how I felt during years before Kuramitsuha returned to me?" "What do you think? Would I understand the feelings of trash?" Atsushi attacks Aki with Kuramitsuha but Chihaya suddenly pushes Aki out of the way. Atsushi is unable to stop Kuramitsuha and Chihaya is killed. Atsushi orders Kuramitsuha to attack again. Believing he is about to die, Aki thinks of Nono, Chihaya, and Kyouhei, decides he is not dying and takes control of Kuramitsuha. At this point, some shrine personnel arrive and Atsushi blames everything on Aki. Seeing the bloody note next to Nono's corpse, Kyouhei arrives at the shrine to find Aki with everyone else slaughtered. Kyouhei asks if Aki killed everyone with Kuramitsuha and Aki says yes. Kyouhei ends the flashback and tells Hibino he subdued Aki who was then jailed; Kuramitsuha was sealed, Kyouhei gave up being a seki, and later finds out that Aki didn't kill Chihaya. The rain stops, but the flashback continues in Kyouhei's mind... Kyouhei has subdued Aki and a crowd has gathered around asking him to calm down. Kyouhei fires a warning blast using Kukuri while Aki laughs his head off, saying Kyouhei is the same as him. The Kuga family head (Kyouhei's grandfather) arrives and tells others to summon the other 2 Kuga seki's. When he orders Kyouhei to stop, Kyouhei attacks with Kukuri. However, Utao yells stop and Kukuri stops in front of her. Thus began Kyouhei's separation from Kukuri and the birth of Utao the seki. Aki's last request to Kyouhei as he is being led to jail is to bury Nono the dog. Kyouhei weeps as he realizes he was an outsider in the entire affair all along. Meanwhile, Aki sits in jail, thinking of Chihaya's offer to leave the village together. Volume 4 Spoiler for Chapter 19:
After repairs are completed, Utao tests Kukuri under Moyako's direction in the forest. During lunch, Utao seeks Moyako and Hibino's advice on how to act like a big sister towards a bratty kid. Moyako advocates submission through force, while Hibino suggests a generous smile. As they head back to the village, Hibino takes her first flight on Kukuri. Unlike the anime, Utao loses control because another kakashi flies past them at great speed. I guess the anime avoided the introduction of Kyouhei's cousin Sion since she won't appear again this season. Hibino fan service as Utao regains control and they land. Back home, Kyouhei makes a call on his cellphone; his dad works on the computer; Hibino drinks with Kyouhei's mom; Utao practices smiling. Kyouhei has a meeting with Koushiro and they discuss Kirio. Kyouhei worries about Kirio under old man Hyuga but Koushiro assures him it's fine now that he's taking Kirio with him. Koushiro asks if "the girl with the rack" is his girlfriend but Kyouhei says "unfortunately no" (Unlike the anime where Kyouhei refuses to answer in embarassment.) Koushiro reminds Kyouhei that being hesitant will only lose his life and even those of others. Finally, Koushiro asks Kyouhei for a favor. Kyouhei, Hibino and Utao set off. Utao spots Kirio in the woods and approaches on Kukuri to give her best big sister smile. Kirio makes a face and leaves; Utao returns to the van sobbing. The words failed meeting crosses both Kyouhei and Koushiro's minds. Spoiler for Chapter 20:
Kuuko's father's investigation in Kyouhei leads him to take an interest in Karakami village but his superiors deny the request to take the investigation there. Back at her apartment, maid outfit Kuuko breaks the 4th wall and curses the author for denying her appearance for 10 chapters. Then she laughs at her father for writing down the password to the police database. More Aki and Kuuko banter until Aki leaves for the library, declaring himself too primitive for computers. At the cafe, Hibino leaves to return her father's books. Kyouhei returns and notes Utao's curiosity in the library; luckily there is one omitted book for Utao to return. Utao's departure marks the loss of the cafe's last attraction and the customers empty out. Kyouhei makes the cosplay cafe joke. Hibino's father discusses Karakami village and how no one can ever truly leave the village. Kyouhei realizes the true reason he gave up being a seki -- he was afraid of losing control. He noticed there is something dormant within himself that is similar to Aki. "Where are you now, Aki?" thinks Kyouhei. Meanwhile, Hibino encounters Aki at the library and they sit down for a chat. Hibino questions Aki's obsession with Kyouhei. Aki asks if Hibino likes Kyouhei; she says she doesn't know yet but that's none of Aki's business. Hibino mentions Senou Sensei and Aki brings out the blade. Aki points out that neither Hibino nor any of the idiots at the shrine realizes the dark overwhelming power dormant in Kyouhei. The true Kuga ultimate bloodline lies in Kyouhei, whose power far exceeds Utao despite the shrine's treasured expectations. Aki suggests that Kyouhei is avoiding him because he realized his own power. Aki considers harming Hibino to provoke Kyouhei but Utao arrives to the rescue. Spoiler for Chapter 21:
Utao encounters Aki at the library, but Hibino suggest they fight somewhere else. At the park, Aki notes Utao's improvement. Utao urges Aki to return the village and declares kakashi's are for saving people, not murder and destruction. Too bad says Aki, kakashi's are used for murder and destruction because they contain human hearts. Aki calls it a day, leaving a message for Kyouhei: our game has not ended. Hibino and Utao return home depressed; Utao tells Kyouhei they met Aki. Hibino broods in her room, thinking everyone involved is crazy and doing whatever they want. Kyouhei knocks on Hibino's door; comic moment when he falls over her and then Utao beats Kyouhei for "cheating" Crying, Utao asks if Aki's words were true, but Kyouhei assures her that human hearts can choose to do good. Chilling on a park bench, Aki wonders to himself: Kuramitsuha, do you wish to be a benevolent god? The day we met, was the beginning of a cursed bloody destiny... Is it possible to turn back? SUddenly Aki discovers someone spying in the bushes and subdues him with a blade at his throat. Spoiler for Chapter 22:
Hibino's father sends Kyouhei, Hibino and Utao to his friend's beachside resort. Unfortunately it's typhoon season and Kyouhei is disappointed he won't get to see Hibino's new swimsuit. To make matters worse, the roof is leaking and a fallen tree crashes into the house, pinning down the owner. Utao uses Kukuri to save the day. Kyouhei and Hibino congratulate Utao on a job well done and Kukuri being a good god. Spoiler for Chapter 23:
Stuttering, Utao welcomes Kuuko's father to the cafe. Utao is terrified by his questions but luckily Hibino's father calls her away. At the university, Kyouhei's friend congratulates him on living under the same roof as everyone's idol. Kyouhei loses manly points for failing to make a move all summer long. Meanwhile, Hibino wonders what's up with Kuuko lately. Shimoyama approaches Aki and asks him not to threaten him with Kuramitsuha like last time (I guess end of Chapter 21). When asked who he is, Shimoyama points out he appeared in Chapters 16 and 17 (the guy leaving the village when Hibino was driving). Shimoyama invites Aki to meet his superior. Aki gets a call from Kuuko; Shimoyama is surprised Aki has a cellphone. Kuuko shows up: I put a GPS on your cellphone. Kuuko wants in on their meeting, and "persuades" Shimoyama with her signature finger snap. After Kuuko's father leaves the cafe, Utao throws salt in the manner of chasing evil spirits away. Shimoyama's boss Hirashiro turns out to be the first person from Karakami village to be elected to Japan's House of Representatives. Within the village, he can only do the bidding of the ruling Kuga and Hyuga families, but he acts as an important liason to the outside world. Hirashiro comments that the village is a thing of the past and the outdated ruling structure must be renewed. Old man Kuga is just a puppet but old man Hyuga is his concern. To distract the Hyuga, it turns out that Hirashiro was the one who unearthed Amaterasu at the ruins of the previous shrine site and sent it to old man Hyuga. Calling Aki and Kuramitsuha the most powerful seki-kakashi pair, he invites Aki to join him and deal with the other seki. "You're the one who let me out? You thought I'd kill my way back to the shrine?" Aki leaves, saying he might consider joining them. Kuuko stays behind and declares she wants to be a part of it. "Why?" "Personal interest, life is too boring." "What good are you to us?" "I have many skills. Not only am I a computer expert, I am also very proactive. To be honest, I am much more useful than that dude there." Points to Shimoyama. Cut to Kyouhei and Hibino at another departmental party. Kyouhei makes another attempt to confess but is once again interrupted by Hibino's friend. Some things never change. Hirashiro asks Shimoyama to investigate Kuuko's background and decides it's a good idea to have her around as a way to keep Aki on leash. Spoiler for Chapter 24:
Utao goes for more training in the woods. Hibino takes pictures of Utao and comments that Utao's smiles are stiff. Kyouhei mentions that they seldom took pictures back in the village. Hibino says it's such a shame and resolves to take pictures of Utao every day from now on. She promises to show them her own childhood photos. Back at the apartment, Kuuko sits on top of Aki and presses him about Hirashiro's offer. Kuuko's father arrives, cutting short Kuuko's seduction attempts. Aki escapes out the window. Unable to sniff out anything definite, Kuuko's father leaves, concluding there is someone else living there. Comically, he is somewhat assured when his partner suggests a servant or flunkie doing Kuuko's bidding. Shimoyama reports his findings on Kuuko and her father, who are both fairly notorious problematic characters. Her father is a standard cowboy cop who gives superiors headaches, but has received numerous commendations. Kuuko herself is the subject of many negative rumors, including being a hacker. Her mother couldn't stand it, moved out, and filed for divorce after a few years. Hirashiro concludes that Kuuko has plenty of dirt to control her through blackmail. Next, Hirashiro asks about Kyouhei who was Shimoyama's classmate in the village. Shimoyama thinks Kyouhei is just a typical privileged kid born in a powerful family, but Hirashiro suspects there must be some basis for Aki's obsession with him. Hirashiro orders Shimoyama to continue surveillance on Kyouhei. Outside the office, Shimoyama scoffs, muttering to himself everyone is always going Kyouhei this Kyouhei that. Back home, Utao and Kyouhei are admiring Hibino's photos. Utao also manages to turn the pages of the photo album using Kukuri's claws without incident. Hibino takes a photo of Utao and encourages her to practice smiling for Kirio. After Utao had gone to sleep, she asks Kyouhei how many kakashi there are. Current there are 8: The Kuga have Kukuri (Utao), Kamotaketsuno and Mikumari, as well as Aki's Kuramitsuha The Hyuga have Uwazushi (Koushiro), Takemikazuchi (Kirio), Magatsuhi and Kagutsuchi Hibino comments that all the names sound so violent; Kyouhei answers that the kakashi were named in ancient times. Also, legend has it there are 2 more kakashi which were destroyed in an incident: Amaterasu and Tokotachi Kyouhei also begins a flashback but tells himself to forget it. Meanwhile, Koushiro, Kiro and Moyako arrive in Tokyo. Koushiro compliments how cute Moyako's sleeping face was, but receives a punch as thanks. "Going back to your flirtacious ways behind your wife's back?" Kirio comments that the air is dirty as always. Volume 5 Spoiler for Chapter 25:
Moyako visits Utao at the cafe, examines Kukuri, and asks if Utao ever used Kukuri's left hand. Utao isn't sure, but Moyako says it explains the damage on Takemikazuchi. Moyako compliments Utao for opening Utao's left hand, a feat which no one has been able to do for the past century until Kyouhei. Utao says Kyouhei must have been great back in the day, but Moyako thinks back to the young friendly Kyouhei and says who knows, she never felt it. Kyouhei and Hibino return. Moyako explains that Koushiro dragged her along since she refused to release Kirio's Takemikazuchi until repairs were complete. Moyako says she understands that no one would want to leave Kirio around Old man Hyuga. Aki sits in a park and is reminded of Chihaya when he sees a woman being pulled by her dog. Aki wonders if coming to Tokyo would have fulfilled Chihaya's wish to go far away. However, Aki decides that he won't be satisfied until he wipes out Karakami village. Otherwise, going anywhere on earth would still be meaningless. Back at Hibino's home, they celebrate Moyako's arrival to Tokyo with sushi. Kyouhei comments how rare it is to get seafood in the village, which is deep in the mountains. Moyako says the final adjustments for Takemikazuchi would take about 2 weeks and asks Hibino to show her around Tokyo. Moyako also brings a present for Utao from Yurako -- a Yurako doll. Yurako further creeps out Utao with a note telling her that she sleeps with a Utao doll every night. Kyouhei comments that Moyako is finally acting more feminine (going shopping) and earns a punch. Shimoyama is watching Hibino's house and is surprised to see Moyako there. Kyouhei walks Moyako to the station. They discuss Kirio; Kyouhei says he has no power to take Kirio back to the Kuga but admits that leaving him under Koushiro's care should be fine. Utao's bro-con flares up and becomes suspiscious of Kyouhei taking his time. When Hibino says she doesn't mind, Utao counts her chickens too early and concludes one less rival to herself. However, it turns out Hibino understands that Kyouhei has a lot to talk about Kirio. Meanwhile, Hibino's father receives a call and announces that his friend will be visiting with her son Tooru. This friend also once lived in Karakami village. Suddenly, a thought strikes Hibino's father: Kyouhei and Utao are from the Kuga family, hope there won't be a problem... The next day, Shimoyama is asking his boss Hirashiro if it's ok to make a deal with a Hyuga seki behind Aki's back. Hirashiro comments that it'll be fine since Aki is not neither blinded by short term gain nor does he let emotion dictate his actions. Spoiler for Chapter 26:
Hibino's father's friend is at the cafe with her son Tooru. They are moving away from Tokyo due to job arrangements. Utao and Tooru bond over video games. When asked who the cute little girl (Utao) is, Hibino's father nervously answers vaguely the child of a friend's. Hibino and Kyouhei return but a full introduction of Kyouhei and Utao proves disastrous once the word Kuga is uttered. The lady immediately gets up to leave with her son and tells Hibino's father that she hopes she will be informed before hand next time. Furthermore, the recent doll rumors are one of the reasons she is moving away. Before leaving, she tells Utao that the shrine and the kakashi's will only hurt others and bring misfortune. It turns out the lady's brother worked at the shrine and was one of many who died a few years ago (the Aki incident, I presume). She blames the Kuga family, hence the hostility. Kyouhei comforts Utao, saying it's not her fault and that he should have stopped Aki back then. Kyouhei assures her that it'll be fine as long as she controls Kukuri and doesn't repeat Kyouhei and Aki's mistakes. Tooru calls and apologizes for his mom's behavior; he had also left his PSP at the cafe. Hibino eagerly plays matchmaker and sets Utao up for a date with Tooru to return the PSP. Kyouhei is thinking in his room: to the victims, all seki are responsible. The curse of Karakami village follows him, transcending time and space; no one can escape... The next day, Hibino happily dresses up Utao, takes a photo and sends her on her date with Tooru. Kyouhei protests that Utao is still in elementary school but Hibino says kids nowadays start dating even as early as kindergarten. "Kids nowadays? Were you like that too?" asks Kyouhei. "hohoho..." laughs Hibino. On a train, Tooru is surprised to find Utao... but it turns out to be Kirio. At the meetingplace, Utao is shocked to see Kirio and orders him to get away from Tooru. Utao brings out Kukuri and even takes out the knife to force Kirio to let go. Angered, Kirio takes out Takemikazuchi but discovers he can't control the magnitude of the lightning because adjustments are not complete. Kirio flees and Utao discovers Tooru is hurt unconscious in the crossfire. At the hospital, Kyouhei receives a slap from Tooru's mom. Spoiler for Chapter 27:
Kyouhei tries to explain to Tooru's mom that Utao isn't like other seki, but she declares that the Kuga and the Hyuga families owe their prosperity to the other villagers they sacrificed. Tooru's mother asks them to leave and never approach them again. Kyouhei tells Utao it's an accident and not her fault but Utao says that she could have prevented it if she controlled Kukuri better. (Personally, I think it's totally her fault for ordering Kirio around and being the first to bring out her kakashi...) That night, Utao visits Tooru by flying on Kukuri and entering through the window. When a nurse makes her rounds, Utao hides in Tooru's bed under the covers. Afterwards, Tooru wants Utao to take him flying on Kukuri but suddenly feels faint and falls on Utao. Utao leaves, forgetting to return the PSP once again. Meanwhile, Moyako reprimands Kirio for using Takemikazuchi against orders, thus requiring additional adjustments. She also scolds Koushiro, saying he is spoiling Kirio too much. Koushiro decides that Kirio can't be fighting with Utao every time they meet, and calls Kyouhei to set up a meeting. As Tooru is checking out of the hospital, Utao arrives to return the PSP and apologize to his mother. Tooru's mother insists that the kakashi problem is not something Utao can fix personally, but Utao insists she'll try her best. After leaving the hospital, Tooru asks his mother for a favor and returns to request Utao for a ride on Kukuri. Tooru is very impressed and thanks Utao for fulfilling his wish. Utao thanks him for being her first non-seki passenger who enjoyed their ride. Spoiler for Chapter 28:
Moyako and Hibino are out and they discuss Tooru. Moyako marvels at Utao's date and notes that it's probably inconvenient for Hibino if Utao sticks to Kyouhei all the time. Why? asks Hibino. Is she really that oblivious, thinks Moyako. Moyako becomes flustered when Hibino asks how's the search for Aki, but calms down when she realizes Hibino was asking about Koushiro. Moyako points out finding someone in Tokyo without any clues is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but then seki have an ability to sense each other's kakashi and are attracted to one another. They then arrive at the meeting between Koushiro+Kirio and Kyouhei+Utao. Koushiro: Though the Hyuga and the Kuga are rivals, it doesn't mean Kirio and Utao have to fight every time they meet. Kirio is pressured into promising that he won't pick a fight with Utao again, at least during the mission to find Aki in Tokyo. Now that's like a man, says Koushiro. Mahiru's voice is heard, chiding Koushiro for consorting with the Kuga and abusing his privileges as the successor to the Hyuga family head. Enter Mahiru, dropping from the sky and wrapping herself around Kyouhei's arm. "Oh how I've missed you, Kyouhei-sama!" Shocked faces go around, though Moyako is relatively calm but Kirio is absolutely terrified. Mahiru laments the impassable wall between the Hyuga and the Kuga that forced her to give up, but decides she no longer needs to endure any more. Utao angers as Mahiru hugs Kyouhei even tighter. "Get away from Kyouhei!" Peeking out from behind Kyouhei's back, Mahiru says "What did you just say, little miss bro-con? I couldn't hear just now." Though Utao fights to contain her rage, Mahiru strikes Utao on the forehead using her kakashi. Hibino catches Utao and protests, but Mahiru dismisses her as someone irrelevant. Hibino argues that her father comes from Karakami village, but Mahiru says that makes her a lower class citizen. Hibino says everyone is equal outside Karakami village and Kyouhei prevents Mahiru from attacking. Koushiro grabs Mahiru and orders her to return to the village. Mahiru accuses them of ganging up against her and that no one understands her feelings. Koushiro brings out his kakashi and says don't increase my workload, but Mahiru knocks his shades off. Mahiru begins attacking Koushiro with her kakashi, forcing him to dodge and leaving him no opportunity to control Uwazushi. Kirio and Kyouhei recognizes Mahiru's kakashi as Magatsuhi. Magatsuhi has a unique ability to set up barriers which cuts off kakashi's from their seki's control. Having Uwazushi in her kakashi's grasp, Mahiru threatens to squeeze it to pieces. Meanwhile, Aki enters Hirashiro's office with Kuuko and says he is still thinking about their deal. Spoiler for Chapter 29:
Koushiro notices bystanders approaching their location and asks Mahiru to stop. Moyako tells Mahiru to stop increasing her workload and threatens she will no longer repair Magatsuhi for Mahiru. "That's ok, my Magatsuhi is invincible! No one can hurt it" "Are you sure, then I don't even need to help you with basic maintenance?" It turns out since kakashi's are made of wood, certain parts wear out very quickly. In addition, the "god's blood" needs to be applied periodically. Anyway, declares Mahriu, my Magatsuhi is the strongest! No one can resist! No one is allowed to ignore me!" Under Koushiro's direction, Kirio creates a distraction in nearby lake to draw bystanders' attention. Kukuri cuts one of the wires maintaining Magatsuhi's barrier, but is then swatted away. As Mahiru threatens to cut Hibino and Utao in half, Kyouhei steps in to shield them. Koushiro is able to manoeuver Uwazushi out of the barrier and smashes Magatsuhi to the ground. In the ensuing chaos, everyone leaves the scene except Moyako who stays behind to pick up a piece of Magatsuhi left behind. At Hirashiro's office, Aki starts discussing conditions. First of all, he wants his own place so that he's not freeloading on Kuuko. He doesn't get to the next point, because Mahiru bursts into the office with Magatsuhi. Mahiru rants against Koushiro, Utao, Moyako, Kirio, "and that large chested woman" Shimoyama tries to calm down Mahiru, who is standing on his desk, but she accuses him of peeping at her panties and kicks him in the face. Then she turns around and notices Aki. Spoiler for Chapter 30:
Aki laughs and realizes that Hirashiro has been approaching other seki's. He says he is insulted to be considered of the same level as a brat, but Mahiru points out he's trash because he couldn't do anything either "that time" Mahiru decides to have a match then and there to determine who is better. Aki loses once Mahiru sets up the barrier disrupting seki control. Kuuko takes out her air gun and tazer but Mahiru subdues her using Magatsuhi, calling her a 4-eyed frog. "How dare you shoot a BB gun at my tender skin! What if it leaves a scar?" "What does it matter? Imperfection has its own allure" Kuuko's tough act fails to faze Mahiru and Hirashiro has to beg for mercy, saying her father is a cop. Back at Hibino's house, everyone is silent at the dinner table. Utao thinks back to when they parted ways with Koushiro and Kirio, and she was chastising Kirio for calling Mahiru his big sister. Utao insists that it's very important that he call her big sister, but Kirio counters that he's only born slightly after her. Kirio tells her to show the proper poise and countenance of a big sister and Utao asks so Mahriu has it? Kirio is silent as he thinks back to bone chilling memories of terror... utao's thoughts are interrupted by Hibino who wonders if she realy wants a 6th bowl of rice. Kyouhei chimes in saying she's going to get fat... After the meal, Kyouhei is talking to someone on his cellphone about meeting the next day at 2pm. Hibino finds Utao drawing a chart to make sense of all the character relationships. Notably, she drew an iron wall around her and Kyouhei's love, as well as writing reconciliation (hopeful) between her and Kirio. Main goal is to catch Aki, while her personal goal is the matter of Kirio. Hibino praises Utao for knowing so many kanji and asks about Mahiru's relationship with Kyouhei. Utao has no idea either and asks if it bothers Hibino. Hibino replies "a little", thus prompting Utao to revise her chart to consider Hibino a revived rival for Kyouhei's affections. The next day, Koushiro meets Kyouhei and demands to know his relationship with Mahiru. At some location, Mahiru gloats at Aki, telling him that he's been injected with drugs that prevent seki from concentrating their kakashi control. Furthermore, Kuramitsuha is stuck in Magatsuhi's barrier. "Without Kyouhei-sama's power, you can't do anything, right? Just like 'that time'..." Begin Aki, Kyouhei and Mahiru's simultaneous flashback to 8 years ago. Volume 6 Spoiler for Chapter 31:
8 years ago, Aki was training in the woods by fighting bears with Kuramitsuha. When the bear lunges at Aki, Kyouhei saves him with Kukuri but Aki retorts that he had the situation under control. But still, there's nothing to be proud about taking out a bear says Kyouhei. Well, I guess the only worthy opponent of a kakashi is another kakashi, says Aki. They notice another seki spying on them and discover Mahiru, who had recently inherited Magatsuhi. Kyouhei surmises she must have been happily flying around with a new toy, just like Aki when he first received Kuramitsuha. Mahiru attacks with her kakashi but Aki criticizes her movements as too obvious. Mahiru fights back tears and Aki praises her for her strength of will. Happy to find an opponent, Aki encourages Mahiru to come at him at full strength, but Kyouhei points out something feels strange. Kyouhei gently asks Mahiru to go home, but she decides to follow them as they investigate the abandoned passageway in the mountains. They find a 4-legged kakashi amidst ruins. Aki feels a faint life force within it and says that a compatible seki could probably move it. Kyouhei wants to tell the adults, but Aki says let this be our secret. Suddenly, tentacles grab Aki and the kakashi says it'll devour him and his negative emotions. Kyouhei slices the tentacles with Kukuri's knife and releases Aki. Aki brings out Kuramitsuha but only gets in one hit before being swatted away. They run for their lives as the unknown kakashi fires a blast from its mouth. Spoiler for Chapter 32:
Kyouhei directs Aki and Mahiru to flank the unknown kakashi while he uses Kukuri to blast it from the front. However, their attacks are not enough. Mahiru sets up the barrier but is terrified by a vision of being surrounded by eyes and sharp teeth. Kyouhei saves her while Aki attacks but Kuramitsuha is stabbed and immobilized. The kakashi attempts to fire another blast but Kyouhei blocks it by having Kukuri stab it in the mouth, causing a huge explosion. A glimpse of Shion is shown, who is flying in the distance and notices the commotion. Aki notes that the kakashi seems to be able to devour human hearts, which is what allows it to move without a seki. Kyouhei says he's never heard of a kakashi like that. At this point the kakashi gets up and fires a beam that narrowly misses them. Kyouhei struggles to pull Aki away while carrying Mahiru on his shoulder but Aki tells Kyouhei to leave him. Kyouhei blocks another beam using Kukuri but they are at their limits. As things begin to look hopeless, Kyouhei loses control and his memories are fuzzy from that point on. When he regained consciousness, the adults had arrived and the monster kakashi was destroyed. Did you do it? asks Koushiro. Kyouhei has no idea but he says he lost confidence as a seki after that. That incident also lost Aki his seki privileges as a result of the damaged Kuramitsuha. Kyouhei reminisces that Aki had always been a sort of trigger that dragged him into many incidents. This toxic atmosphere around Aki seemed weakened after he lost Kuramitsuha and Kyouhei found it much easier to get along with Aki. However, Kyouhei was always afraid that Aki would regain Kuramitsuha one day. The rules of the shrine forbade such an event, but we all know what happened two years later. Back to Aki and Mahiru, Mahiru points out they would have been dead if Kyouhei didn't open Kukuri's left hand back then. Spoiler for Chapter 33:
Aki's thoughts: Kuramitsuha, the only thing Karakami village granted him that belonged to him, gained him respect, and allowed him to become an indispensible part of the village. It is the source of all his power. But against overwhelming power (the monster kakashi), Kuramitsuha lost completely. Perhaps it was his own weak resolve and not Kuramitsuha's fault. Though Kyouhei doesn't remember it, Aki and Mahiru witnessed Kyouhei opening Kukuri's left hand, absorbing the monster kakashi's beam and redirecting it back, destroying it. At that point, Shion arrived (the author still avoids showing her full face). From that time onwards, Kyouhei became Mahiru's only hero. "So I was totally not surprised when I heard that Kyouhei kicked your ass when you went wild at the shrine!" "But what I can't understand is how they let Utao replace Kyouhei as seki. The Kuga must be blind!" Hence, Mahiru is joining up with Hirashiro because the village ruling structure would never allow a union between her and Kyouhei. For her and Kyouhei's glorious future, the rules must fall! Have you asked what Kyouhei wants? questions Aki. He has a girlfriend. "What did you say?" "Didn't you see the chick with the huge rack? She's not bad. Let's face reality. Even if you did away with all the rules, the most important is that person..." "Shut up." Aki is tasered, and Mahiru leaves. Kyouhei returns home to be interrogated by Utao and Hibino. Referring to the flashback, Utao is unhappy that she never got to see such a heroic side to Kyouhei. They begin to wonder about Mahiru since there's no reason for the Hyuga to send 3 seki's. Koushiro is wondering the same thing but he doesn't want to ask Old man Hyuga. Kirio walks out of the bath and Moyako criticizes him for wrapping the towel like a woman. "I almost thought it was Utao!" Moyako leaves to go shopping with Hibino. They take a break at "Strabucks Coffee" and Moyako laments there are no opportunities to dress fashionably at the village. She could only satisfy herself by dressing up in her own room. Back in village, the only person brave enough to dress like that out in public would be Mahiru. Hibino asks if Mahiru often comes to shop in Tokyo but Moyako points out she buys online, hence the frequent deliveries at the village. Hibino assures Moyako that even if she can't wear them often she shouldn't waste her chance to shop in Tokyo. "Better to buy then regret, than to regret not buying" is Hibino's motto. While Moyako goes to the washroom, Mahiru kidnaps Hibino. Spoiler for Chapter 34:
Back home, Utao and Kyouhei opens a parcel from Tooru's family containing various local souvenirs. Tooru addresses a pack of snacks to Utao, but Utao is disappointed that his brief note only said "these taste good" At this moment, Moyako calls Kyouhei to report Hibino's gone missing. Mahiru welcomes a tied-up Hibino to her room at Hirashiro's secret office. Mahiru grabs Hibino's chest and accuses her of seducing Kyouhei with it. Mahiru says she heard that Hibino was going out with Kyouhei but Hibino says she's mistaken. Mahiru doesn't believe her and goes on a rant saying that she, as the strongest Hyuga seki, is the only match for Kyouhei, the strongest Kuga seki. A modern version of Romeo and Juliet, Mahiru is convinced that they have the power to overthrow the old 2 family ruling structure and create a new paradise. Therefore, Mahiru will not allow Hibino to interfere in their love. Kyouhei is the strongest seki? asks Hibino, Aki also said that. "Of course Aki would say that, we both witnessed Kyouhei's true potential -- the ability to destroy everything. A lone warrior without equal." Hibino comments that Kyouhei doesn't seem that scary, and thinks Kyouhei would rather live an ordinary peaceful life. Mahiru insists that the world is about survival of the fittest and victory is the meaning of life, but Hibino is unconvinced. Meanwhile, Kuuko is confined to a guarded room and takes stock of her belongings. Though her cellphone, taser and other stuff were taken, she notes that the female body has too many hiding places, and takes out a listening device. It turns out Kuuko had Hirashiro's office bugged and she overhears him talking to Shimoyama about Hibino's kidnapping. Shimoyama says Mahiru was furious after finding out about Hibino and he would have lost his life if he tried to stop her. Hirashiro shrewdly guesses that Aki must have provided her the info. Mahiru interrupts Shimoyama's phonecall, orders him to guard Hibino's room and then leaves, saying she has a date. Hirashiro orders Shimoyama to ensure Hibino's safety and find an appropriate opportunity to release her later. Meanwhile, Kyouhei calls Koushiro but they have no idea where Mahiru is staying. Kirio asks what's going on, and Koushiro says the big sister with the large rack has gone missing. With no further clues, Kyouhei decides to rely on Utao's ability to sense other seki. Back to Kuuko, she is deep in thought when one of Hirashiro's men arrives to ask her what she wants for dinner. Kuuko accidentally knocks him out with some sort of spray. Kuuko was originally planning on working under Hirashiro for a while to understand everything first, but now her hand is forced and she decides to escape and save Hibino. Kuuko decides she can't lose to "that gothic lolita" Hibino's father suggests calling the police but as if on cue, Mahiru makes a grand entrance ... and happens to land on Tooru's gift to Utao. "Kyouhei-sama, how are you today?" Spoiler for Chapter 35:
Kyouhei is in a serious mood and asks Mahiru about Hibino. Mahiru tries to change the subject but admits responsibility. Kyouhei demands Hibino's release and Mahiru asks if she is Kyouhei's lover. (Utao seems even more intent on Kyouhei's answer) Kyouhei says he's not going out with Hibino, but Mahiru calls him a liar, stamping her feet and further flattening Utao's gift. Damn Aki, thinks Kyouhei... Mahiru says even if Aki was lying, she suspects that Hibino will eventually trick Kyouhei and seduce him, so she cannot allow such a threat to her future with Kyouhei. Utao interrupts to tell Mahiru to stop stepping on the package. Utao brings out Kukuri and engages Magatsuhi. "Move your feet!" Kyouhei tells them to stop fighting inside the house and requests Mahiru release Hibino. Mahiru agrees on 1 condition, that Kyouhei return to the village with her. Kyouhei says no and Mahiru leaves agrily. Kyouhei, your negotiation skills suck, says Moyako. However, Kyouhei says Mahiru is serious so he cannot try to trick her. Kyouhei says that he knows Mahiru won't harm innocents but they worry about who is plotting in the dark and using Mahiru. Back to Hibino, Shimoyama assures her that they will release her. "I knew it, there's someone manipulating Mahiru" "I thought girls became stupid once they enter university", Shimoyama is surprised, "but being too smart isn't always good" "That's right, you already know my face" continues Shimoyama, "I have to shut you up somehow." "Hmm, Kyouhei's woman...", Shimoyama stares lewdly at Hibino's body, "I wonder what expression he'll have..." Hirashiro gets ready to leave the office and finds Kuuko knocking out his secretary. Kuuko gives him a good kick and locks him in his room. Kuuko concludes the secretary is most likely Hirashiro's mistress and grabs her keys, hoping one of them will open the apartment Hibino is kept in. Kuuko finds Aki, scolds him for ruining her plans, tosses him a key, and heads out for Hibino. Meanwhile Kyouhei is wondering where to start looking when he imagines Aki gloating at him. The imaginary Aki asks him how does it feel to be fully involved this time, rather than be an observer. But then, Kyouhei is no longer a seki and doesn't have the power of the kakashi to protect his loved ones. Kyouhei shouts at the imaginary Aki and scares Utao. Kyouhei thinks of Hibino's phone's GPS but Moyako says Hibino dropped the phone when she was kidnapped. At this point, Kuuko calls and tells them Hibino's location. Pressed for time, Kyouhei decides to risk being seen and takes flight with Utao on Kukuri. Kyouhei promises Hibino's father he'll bring back Hibino safe and sound. Spoiler for Chapter 36:
As Kyouhei and Utao take off on Kukuri to save Hibino, Moyako grabs onto Kyouhei to tag along. Shimoyama loosens his tie and tells Hibino that the room is soundproof. Hibino kicks him in the face but Shimoyama uses Kuuko's modified taser that Mahiru left behind. Hirashiro interrupts with a phonecall ordering Shimoyama to report back if Mahiru returns. Just as Hirashiro is about to shoot the lock, more of his men arrive to release him, but he pockets the gun. Shimoyama has Hibino tied down on the bed. "Kyouhei sure has dangerous friends ... " "Don't lump me with that mass murderer! And I'm not Kyouhei's friend! You can never be friends with the Kuga and the Hyuga. They are the masters and we are the slaves." "At least Kyouhei doesn't think that way." "Kyouhei was born with a silver spoon and doesn't know anything of hardship! Even giving up being a seki doesn't change the fact that he is high above the other villagers. Even if he thought of me as a friend when he was small, he will still grow up as a member of the Kuga and order me around." Just as Shimoyama praises Hibino's ability to stall for time, Kuuko arrives and knocks him out. Kuuko comments that she could profit from selling photos of the voluptuous Hibino in such a compromising position and Hibino yells at her to stop joking around. Cutting Hibino loose, Kuuko is happy to regain her taser while Hibino laments that her jacket is ruined. As they escape, they run into Hirashiro. Hirashiro takes out his gun while Kuuko faces him with her taser, while Hibino heads for the fire escape. Kuuko locks the door after Hibino, throws the taser at Hirashiro as a distraction and rushes him down. Hibino hears a gunshot but runs into Mahiru, who is talking to herself and wondering if Kyouhei dumped her. "what do you think? Shiba Hibino..." |

Volume 7 Spoiler for Chapter 37:
Kuuko rushes down Hirashiro and manages to direct his gunshot towards the ceiling. They wrestle on the ground and struggle for control of the gun. Shimoyama wakes up from being knocked out by a golf club and hears a gunshot. Discovering Hibino had escaped, Shimoyama fears for his life from both Hirashiro and Mahiru. Leaving the apartment, he finds Kuuko holding the gun with Hirashiro lying on the ground, shot. Fast thinking Kuuko tosses Shimoyama the gun just in time for a bystander to enter the corridor and yell "murder!" Kuuko grabs Shimoyama and shouts "Let's go, husband!" turning him into a fugitive. Meanwhile, Mahiru notes how calm Hibino is and wonders if it's because she's certain of Kyouhei's feelings. Mahiru continues to question why Kyouhei hates the village and gave up being a seki when he had the power to defeat anyone and take whatever he wanted. Hibino quotes Kyouhei's line about how "over abundant power leads to misfortune" Mahiru grabs Hibino using Magatsuhi and asks if there are things that cannot be obtained by the power of the kakashi. Hibino says that taking things by force is not the point. Mahiru asks if you have the power to obtain anything, how can you be unfortunate? Why would Kyouhei say something like that? Hibino says she doesn't know but she agrees with Kyouhei's conclusion. Mahiru says that Magatsuhi is the power that allows her to live in the village. Hibino says she is talking about Kyouhei, not Mahiru, but Mahiru yells shut up and throw her off the building. Regretting her rash action, Mahiru looks over the edge to find Hibino caught by Kyouhei jumping off Kukuri. Luckily Moyako is able to grab Kyouhei's shirt, or else his heroics would have been in vain. They land on the roof and Hibino worries about Kuuko. Mahiru follows them to the roof and begins another face off. Spoiler for Chapter 38:
Kyouhei says to Mahiru that he should be her opponent, but he is no longer a seki. So it's up to Utao, who says she also has a reason to fight (she's thinking of Tooru's ruined gift.) Utao says she'll fight until Mahiru apologizes. Utao notes that Mahiru cannot use her barrier in such an open area, but Mahiru is confident. Blocking a frontal attack from Magatsuhi, Utao warns Mahiru not to underestimate her. The battle proceeds as a kakashi fistfight which horrifies Kyouhei and Moyako. This momentarily distracts Utao, allowing Magatsuhi to throw Kukuri. Hibino hits the edge of the building and notices Kuuko escaping with Shimoyama in the streets. Kukuri and Magatsuhi's fight turns into an aerial battle. Hibino asks them to stop, but Moyako notes that it's impossible until they get their anger out of their system. From a distance, Koushiro and Kirio watches. Koushiro says it's impossible to stop them now and asks if Kirio is worried. (Tsundere!?) Kirio makes a suspiciously specific denial about worrying about Utao. Triumphant Koushiro says he was talking about Mahiru. Mahiru taunts Utao, saying she can't match Kyouhei's ability, causing Kukuri to rush in and wrestle with Magatsuhi. Magatsuhi drags Kukuri to a more secluded spot to use the barrier, but barrier creation is slowed down because Magatsuhi lost one of its horns (the component Moyako picked up during the last confrontation). Utao successfully uses the opportunity to stab Magatsuhi in the head with Kukuri's knife. Spoiler for Chapter 39:
After stabbing Magatsuhi, Utao orders Kukuri to drop Magatsuhi back on the roof... but almost drops it on herself. Mahiru orders Magatsuhi to get up but it is unresponsive. Moyako observes that it's useless because the control system has been cut. Suddenly, Magatsuhi moves on its own and grabs Hibino. Kukuri blocks an attack on Hibino and is sent flying. Magatsuhi even threatens Mahiru but she forces it to the ground with sheer force of will. However, Magatsuhi makes another attack and Kyouhei has to save Mahiru. Mahiru gets a nosebleed from smashing her face but is ecstatic that Kyouhei saved her. Her joy is shortlived as Kyouhei turns around and focuses on Hibino. Moyako comments that Magatsuhi must be obeying Mahiru's lingering feelings at the point when control was cut off. Kukuri attacks and causes Magatsuhi to be impaled on some sort of pole or antennae on the roof. Spoiler for Chapter 40:
Thiking that Magatsuhi is subdued, Koushiro enters the fray but Uwadutsu is shot by Magatsuhi's eye beam. Mahiru is surprised that Magatsuhi had that kind of power. Moyako explains that kakashi functions are shaped by the seki's capability and preferences. In other words, Mahiru hasn't been able to bring out Magatsuhi's full potential. Moyako states that a kakashi's power greatly depends on the seki's personality. Kyouhei climbs onto Magatsuhi and tries to free Hibino but he is beaten by Magatsuhi's other arm. Utao and Kirio rush in with Kukuri and Takemikazuchi to save Kyouhei but they are driven off by Magatsuhi's eye beams. They circle in the sky and attack once again, but Magatsuhi grabs Kukuri and Takemikazuchi ends up stabbing Kukuri in the eye. Horrified, Kirio apologizes profusely and retreats. As Magatsuhi tightens its grip on Hibino, Kyouhei flashesback to when he was discussing with his parents about leaving the village to go to Tokyo. His father agrees it's a good idea to have 4 years to see the world before returning to his duties at the village. Kyouhei interpreted that conversation as a decree that it is impossible to leave the village. Kyouhei's mother encouraged him to do his best and take care. Flashback jumps forward to Kyouhei's first introduction to Hibino and her father which indicates love on first sight. Kyouhei is hit on the back of his head by Magatsuhi and his eyes go wild. Utao is shocked. Omininously, Kukuri moves again. Spoiler for Chapter 41:
Magatsuhi attacks Kukuri with its eye beams but Kukuri deflects them with its own eye beam. Utao attempts to open Kukuri's left hand but it doesn't seem able to open. Magatsuhi rises into the air with Hibino and Kyouhei to face Kukuri. Kukuri fires a blast which severs Magatsuhi's arm, causing Kyouhei and Hibino to fall. Utao notices an unnatural feeling as Kukuri continues to fight with Magatsuhi at close quarters. Koushiro manages to catch Kyouhei and Hibino using Uwadutsu. Koushiro turns around to order Kirio to pick up Moyako, Utao and Mahiru from the other rooftop, but Kirio has disappeared. Moyako is persplexed by the glow on both of Kukuri's hands as they smash into Magatsuhi. Koushiro arrives to pick up Moyako but Utao appears to have lost consciousness. Koushiro gives Mahiru a slap and picks her up by the waist. On the other roof, Hibino disentangles herself from Magatsuhi's arm and sees Kyouhei unconscious. Kukuri continues to fight and gives a final blow which completely pierces the centre of Magatsuhi. Magatsuhi explodes. Everyone leaves on Uwadutsu and Kukuri follows even though Utao is unconscious. Mahiru cries for Magatsuhi. Hibino's father rushes to the hospital to find Hibino waiting outside Kyouhei's room with Utao sleeping on her lap. Utao and Hibino are fine, but Kyouhei is still unconscious after his concussion. Koushiro avoids Hibino's father, and is annoyed that Mahiru has slipped away. Koushiro notes that she must be shocked to see her own kakashi destroyed before her eyes. Moyako comments that gods are not absolute. Kirio has run off to some park and wondering if Koushiro is angry and how Kyouhei is. A drunken businessman mistakes Kirio for a girl and scares him into running ... Right into the path of Kuuko's father. "Are you Kuga Utao?" Spoiler for Chapter 42:
Kyouhei awakes in the hospital to see Utao, Hibino, her father and Moyako. Meanwhile, Kuuko's father Karahari treats the famished Kirio to a fancy dinner. Kirio wonders why this strange man, who knows Utao, isn't taking him to a police station, but reassures himself that he has Takemikazuchi. Kirio tells him his name but doesn't say the last name. Karahari calls his partner for advice on how to handle kids, but his partner protests it's his day off. Finding Kirio asleep at the table, Karahari takes him home. Kirio wakes up and is alarmed but makes himself at home, taking a bath and playing chess with Karahari. Knowing Kyouhei had awakened, Koushiro prepares to leave the hospital. Moyako asks about Kirio and Mahiru. Koushiro isn't worried about Kirio because he can locate him through Takemikazuchi. On the other hand, Mahiru cannot be contacted and Koushiro suspects Hirashiro because Hibino was imprisoned at his apartment. In his dreams, Kyouhei sees Hibino being taken away and yells out "Give Hibino back! Hibino is mine!" Lunging out, Kyouhei wakes up to find himself hugging the real Hibino. Hibino calmly asks him to leave the room with her to talk somewhere more discreet. In a stairwell, Kyouhei apologizes and explains the dream he was having. Hibino comments that he yelled out the same words when saving her from Magatsuhi. Protesting that she is not Kyouhei's possession, Hibino rewards him with a kiss, saying his words made her happy. Hibino thanks Kyouhei for saving her, and Kyouhei hugs her tightly. The moment is ruined by passerbys going through the stairs and they return to Kyouhei's room, hand in hand. Seeing Utao at the door, they quickly release hands. A distraught Utao tells them that Kukuri can no longer move. I'm guessing the anime will likely end the season at this point. *Edit: Actually, the anime includes a few scenes from chapters 43 and 44. Volume 8 Spoiler for Chapter 43:
Karahari (Kuuko's father) wakes up to find that Kirio has cleared up the trash and doing the dishes. He is touched because Kuuko never did any housework. Kirio asks if he is lonely but Karahari says he never thought about it. At the hospital, Utao is distressed that she could neither move Kukuri nor make it disappear. Moyako is working on diagnosing the problem back in Hibino's home. Utao says she discovered the problem the day after Kyouhei woke up. At Karahari's home, Karahari is sharing a pizza with Kirio and complimenting his chess skills. Kirio admits that he often played with his grandfather. Karahari worries that he is liable for kidnapping Kirio when he receives a call telling him Kuuko shot Hirashiro. Karahari leaves the room and leaves Kirio to finish the pizza. Surveillance video showed Kuuko shooting Hirashiro then escaping with a man she called husband. Kirio snoops in Karahari's jacket, finds his police badge, and exits out a window on Takemikazuchi. Karahari wonders if his daughter is foolish enough to play Bonnie and Clyde and returns to find Kirio missing. Kirio wonders where he should go and if Aki felt the same way when he escaped. Kyouhei returns home with Hibino and Utao but Moyako can't find anything wrong with Kukuri's internals. Utao asks if she's the problem but Moyako says it's too early to say. Either way, they have to return to the village for repairs. Hibino's father calls them for dinner and they go, but Kyouhei stays behind. Kyouhei confirms his suspicions by attempting to move Kukuri's hand, which responds. Meanwhile, Kirio finds shelter from rain on a rooftop. He endures cold and hunger, thinks back to the pizza, accidentally hurting Kukuri, and worrying if Kyouhei was saved. As Kirio is about drift into sleep, Koushiro finds him and asks if he wants to escape the village like Aki. Hugging Koushiro, Kirio says he wants to be with him. Don't regret it, says Koushiro. Kyouhei and Hibino are discussing the weather and Hibino asks if Utao is fine about Kukuri. Hibino leaves for her turn at the bath, while Aki gives Kyouhei a surprise visit. Spoiler for Chapter 44:
Aki visits Kyouhei at Hibino's house and asks about Mahiru. Kyouhei accuses Aki of inducing Mahiru to kidnap Hibino, but Aki says what's the problem with seeing the rainbow after the stormy weather. Aki replies that his next step is to return to the village and clean everything up. "What do you mean by clean everything up?" Scene switches to Old man Hyuga Sahei discussing recent events with his concubine. First there is the loss of Magatsuhi and the disappearance of Mahiru. Next, Sahei had hopes for Hirashiro but he ended up being no match for a mere girl. Sahei explains that the "eye" on Amaterasu is not a part of the kakashi's true body, but a device for observing the environment while it is regenerating in its cocoon. Sahei says there is no need to fear these shells of gods which must be driven by seki. He summons Koushiro and Kirio to be brought to him. The concubine asks about Aki but Sahei says they've wasted too much time on him and that Aki wasn't an essential piece anyway. Back to Kyouhei, Aki reveals Hirashiro's plotting and approaching him and Mahiru. Aki also informs Kyouhei that Amaterasu was unearthed and in the hands of old man Hyuga. Kyouhei's cluelessness prompts Aki to reveal that he stole some old scrolls from the shrine and figured out the identity of the kakashi Kyouhei destroyed 8 years ago. Records describe Amaterasu as having 4 legs, high battle potential, and powerful self regeneration. If the kakashi destroyed by Kukuri was the legendary Amaterasu, then what is the kakashi in Old man Hyuga's hands? Which brings Aki to his main point, perhaps Amaterasu's self regeneration remains functional as long as its core remains intact. Is that monster immortal? wonders Kyouhei. Meanwhile, deep in thought, Utao is brushing her teeth and swallows her rinsing water by accident. Hibino assures her that the technicians at the village will be able to fully restore Kukuri. Kyouhei asks if Aki and Old man Hyuga both hate the world so much that they have to revive the monster Amaterasu. Aki points out that Kyouhei is afraid because he realizes he harbours the same dark desires in the depths of his heart. The depths of my heart is my own personal problem, says Kyouhei. It is also a problem between him and the village, his clan, and his parents. However, Kyouhei points out his problem is unlike Aki, who killed innocent people without care. Maybe that's true, admits Aki, which is why he must go forward and never look back. Aki asks if Kyouhei remembers the road by the river which they often took to return to the village after training in the woods. They would always eat the delicious bentos that Kyouhei's mother prepared. Aki says that memory is as far away as if it was buried in a trashcan sealed under concrete. Aki bids Kyouhei farewell and leaves on Kuramitsuha. Spoiler for Chapter 45:
Detective Karakari reviews the video of her daughter shooting Hirashiro and concludes that a plea of self-defense should hold in court. Karakari's coworkers complain about his daughter increasing their workload and owing the media a favour to suppress the story. Hirashiro remains in a coma. Kyouhei, Utao, Hibino and Moyako are watching the news reporting sightings of UFO's (Kukuri and Magatsuhi were caught on video). Hibino confirms renting the van to return to the village and Kyouhei asks if she really wants to go. Kyouhei apologizes for all the trouble and danger that happened. However, it turns out there is no other choice anyway since neither Kyouhei nor Moyako have valid driving licenses. Kyouhei worries about returning to the vilage with Hibino since Aki will be there as well as Amaterasu. Shimoyama and Kuuko are staying at a love motel. They see the flying doll story in the news but Hirashiro being shot is not reported. Kuuko concludes he must still be alive. Shimoyama questions why they had to run since Kuuko could easily plea self-defense. Kuuko laughs at Shimoyama for figuring it out so late, explaining that she wants chaos and excitement. She wants freedom of movement and Shimoyama to lead her to Karakami village. Back to Hibino and Moyako discussing Kuuko and Shimoyama. They realize Kyouhei isn't listening and Hibino gets mad that Kyouhei isn't worrying about Kuuko. Moyako advises dense Kyouhei to chase after Hibino and apologize. Asking if Utao still wishes to make Kukuri a benevolent god, Moyako tells her to treasure these feelings. Koushiro drives back to the village with Kirio, wondering why old man Hyuga wants them to return so soon without completing their mission (catching Aki). Koushiro also wonders about why his wife Saki wants him to return home before seeing Old man Hyuga. Meanwhile, Kyouhei knocks on Hibino's door in vain. Saki declares victory to Koushiro, announcing the arrival of a new member of the household. Kirio congratulates them on the pregnancy and they ask him to become the older brother to the unborn child. Kirio is touched that he can remain under Koushiro's care. Outside some convenience store, a tracksuit wearing person ambushes shoppers and steals their food. It turns out Mahiru has been living on the streets by staking out convenience stores. Spoiler for Chapter 46:
While Mahiru is savouring her spoils, she is discovered by some of her former victims who want to teach her a lesson. She is surrounded and her attackers gleefully discover she is a girl when her cap is knocked off. Mahiru bites and fights back viciously but she is brutally punched in the face and held down on the ground. Luckily, Kuramitsuha and Aki appear on scene before anything worse happens. Mahiru asks if he killed them but Aki says he only "caressed" them so they should be fine if they get first aid fast. "How gentle." "I wasn't in the mood." "...Thanks" says Mahiru, surprising Aki. "I am thanking you for saving me because I am a very polite person." Mahiru laughs at Aki for returning to the village but Aki observes that they both have nowhere else to go. Old man Hyuga's concubine bring Koushiro and Kirio to meet him at Amaterasu. Koushiro comments that she has changed a lot since being sent to the Hyuga household as debt collateral. The concubine declares Hyuga Sahei to be very gentle and someone she respects greatly. I thought you always hated the old man, says Koushiro. They arrive at Amaterasu. Back to Utao who is trying to communicate with Kukuri. Losing her balance, Utao does a front flip onto the ground and finds Kyouhei watching her. Utao wonders about all the generations of seki before her and whether Kukuri remembers all their feelings. Would Kukuri remember Utao decades, or even centuries from now? Scene goes back to Old man Hyuga Sahei and Koushiro. Sahei introduces Amaterasu and begins a flashback to 60 odd years ago. After Japan's defeat in World War II, the village was in a state of depression. This turned into an opportunity for Sahei to sell kakashi technology to the USA. Due to his eye injury, Sahei had been denied the chance to participate in WWII. Inviting Japanese politicians and high ranking officials from the US occupying forces, Sahei gave them a demonstration. Watching the kakashi flying freely in the sky (looks like Takemikazuchi), Sahei was filled with pride in the village, the shrine and the kakashi. Though Japan may have lost, Sahei was convinced that the power of Karakami village would never lose. However, his pride was shaken when the Americans laughed at him, dismissing the kakashi as a good circus act. The Americans insulted the Japanese as a superstitious lot for worshipping these dolls as gods. Declaring that they were powerful enough without any need to import such technology from a defeated country, the Americans jokingly asked if they needed another atomic demonstration to see how these "gods" would fare. At that point, Sahei wished he was a seki and could slaughter them all that instant. Even now, he sometimes dreams about what would happened if he did that. The village was humiliated and they realized there was no way a bunch of villagers can stand up to a country that made half the world their enemy. Sahei concludes that he would have retreated into a fruitless life if he hadn't come across a number of critical pieces by chance throughout his power struggle against the Kuga. Looking at Kirio, he says it must be destiny. Sahei says that Koushiro may not have heard, but Mahiru told him everything about the incident when Amaterasu woke up. Sahei realized that Amaterasu could gain great power by devouring seki and feeding on their fear, pain and hate. Concluding Aki to be the perfect meal, Sahei sent them to capture Aki. But then he realized even without Aki, he had another perfect candidate. Sahei asks Kirio if he enjoyed ordinary life. How does it feel to experience happiness and looking forward to life? Too bad, everything ends here. Spoiler for Chapter 47:
Utao wakes up in the middle of the night in cold sweat and worries about Kirio. Old man Hyuga Sahei grabs Kirio but Koushiro stops him, saying Kirio is not his tool. The concubine shoots Koushiro and Sahei expresses his disappointment. He had hoped Koushiro would be a truly worthy successor if he had the resolve to sacrifice Kirio. Koushiro attempts to fight back using Uwadutsu but Amaterasu immobilizes it and Koushiro is shot again. Sahei dares Kirio to betray him and take out Takemikazuchi to fight but Kirio is unable to resist his absolute fear of Sahei. "Eat him, Amaterasu." Back at Hibino's home, they load the Kukuri in the van with the arms detached. They decide that the smaller people had to sit in the back -- poor Moyako and Utao. Before they set off, Hibino's father questions whether she has to go and asks if Hibino likes Kyouhei. Hibino says yes and her father says there is nothing much he could do except pray for the future. Hibino's father places Hibino in Kyouhei's care and sends them on their way. Stuck in traffic, Moyako and Utao grow increasingly uncomfortable and are thankful for a rest break. Moyako sees Kyouhei together with Hibino and wonders how they made up after the previous argument. Earlier, Utao had received a letter from Tooru but is saving it to read at the village. Moyako interrogates Utao about the letter but is stopped because they have to continue their journey. Utao wonders about her feeling about Kirio. As they approach the village, Moyako and Kyouhei are commenting that there's no cellphone signal when they notice smoke coming from the village. Something crashes into the van and knocks it over. Utao and Moyako crawl out but Kyouhei and Hibino are trapped by their seat belts. Moyako recognizes Kamotaketsuno, and its seki, the glasses wearing Shion, finally makes a full appearance after numerous cameos. Amaterasu jumps out in pursuit and engages Shion's kakashi. Without any offensive weaponry, Kamotaketsuno can only drag Amaterasu around and redirect its shots. Unfortunately, Utao still cannot control Kukuri. Spoiler for Chapter 48:
Kyouhei wakes up and manages to free himself. While trying to free Hibino, they are almost crushed by Amaterasu which was being pulled by Shion's Kamotaketsuno. Kyouhei struggles against the temptation to solve his problems using Kukuri but has no other choice. Firing a powerful blast which penetrates the van, Amaterasu, as well as the clouds above, Kyouhei emerges as Kukuri's seki once again. Despite a damaged eye and no arms, Kukuri under Kyohei's control is able to match Amaterasu's beam attacks with its own. "How nostalgic... Let's go, Kukuri!" Volume 9 Spoiler for Chapter 49:
As Koushiro lies helpless and bleeding on the ground, he can only watch as Kirio is wrapped by tentacles and taken into Amaterasu. Takemikazuchi materializes and drops to the ground. Amaterasu emerges and busts out of the chamber. Back to the present, Kyouhei is facing off against Amaterasu. Unlike Utao who takes too long to charge the eye beam, Kukuri's beams under adult Kyouhei are fast and powerful, forcing Amaterasu to avoid direct critical hits. Kyouhei can also fire multiple beams in succession while on the run. However, Moyako and Shion observes that Kyouhei is being too hasty for a quick victory due to Kukuri's damaged eye and lack of arms (where most of the weapons are). Shion, Moyako and Utao cooperate to free Hibino from the van. Moyako notes how fortunate Hibino is to survive Amaterasu crushing the van while Shion marvels at the size of Hibino's chest. As Kyouhei continues to battle, Shion drops off Moyako, Utao and Hibino at a safer distance and goes back to assist Kyouhei. Utao realizes she has to tell Kyouhei about Kirio, and runs after her. Shion attaches Kamotaketsuno's wires to Amaterasu and pulls upwards, exposing its underside for Kyouhei to attack. However, Kukuri's beam is blocked by Amaterasu's 2 blade-like limbs, which are destroyed in the process. Just as Kyouhei is firing the finishing shot, Utao interferes and Amaterasu makes a getaway. Utao explains that she can sense Kirio inside the 4 legged kakashi and reproaches Kyouhei for not feeling anything despite being brothers. Meanwhile, the van is on fire and they hurry to retrieve Kukuri's arms before they burn. Unfortunately, they are unable to save Moyako's Tokyo shopping. As Moyako laments the mountain of clothes she spent her savings on, Shion is secretly jealous that Moyako went on a Shibuya shopping spree before her. Luckily, Moyako is comforted by the fact that she sent her best clothes back home by courier. Hibino wakes up and Kyouhei apologizes for not attending to her but Hibino understands he needed to battle. Utao is perplexed by the excellent atmosphere between Kyouhei and Hibino, but Shion reminds them to head back to the village. Spoiler for Chapter 50:
At the village, the western wing of the shrine and the Hyuga home are on fire but under control. The villagers are surprised to see Kyouhei, Utao and Moyako returning. Shion reports that Amaterasu escaped and enters the shrine to find her father and grandfather. Inside the shrine, the village elders are holding a conference and condemning Old man Hyuga Sahei's actions. The remaining Hyuga are equally distressed (over 30 people are injured) but maintains they were kept in the dark The Kuga family head (Kyouhei's grandfather) takes control and decides their goal is find and stop Sahei before Amaterasu rampages in the nearby cities. The remaining Hyuga are forced to concede leadership to the Kuga since their family is responsible. Taking count of their remaining kakashi, the Kuga have 2: Shion's Kamotaketsuno and Souya's Mikumari (not counting the just returned Kukuri). The Hyuga only have 1: Kagutsuchi, because Koushiro is heavily injured, Kirio is eaten and Mahiru is missing. Kagutsuchi's seki is Akatsumi, who is fat, lazy and plays videogames all day ever since he lost to Koushiro the bid for the next family head. He is offended when Kyouhei fails to recognize him while Shion rubs his loss to his face. Everyone enters the meeting at the shrine and the elders order Shion, Souya and Akatsumi to search for Amaterasu. The repairs to Kukuri are supposed to complete overnight. Kyouhei taking control of Kukuri without any ceremony is a shock but they order Kyouhei to join the search as soon as Kukuri is ready. The elders continue to bark orders to manage the situation such as procuring food to supply the evacuated villagers. Shion asks her brother Souya to cover for her while she asks the technicians to look at her kakashi. Akatsumi goes home to prepare since he hasn't used his kakashi for over half a year. Shion is skeptical of his abilities but apparently Akatsumi used to be good enough to be Koushiro's rival to the Hyuga succession. Old man Hyuga Sahei finds Amaterasu limping back and scolds it for tarnishing its reputation as the strongest kakashi. Amaterasu opens up to show Kirio held in its core. Sahei encourages Kirio to bring out more hate. Koushiro wakes up in the western wing of the shrine to find that Sahei's concubine Ayame saved him after shooting him before. She leaves as Koushiro's wife Saki arrives. However, Saki faints at the sight of blood. Moyako heads back home to her workshop. Shion asks her to look at Kamotaketsuno which currently has no offensive weaponry because its special form has been sealed. Hibino asks if Kyouhei truly wishes to fight using Kukuri, repeating his words that over abundant power leads to misfortune. Utao steps in. "Kyouhei! Give Kukuri back to me!" Spoiler for Chapter 51:
Utao confronts Kyouhei and demands he return Kukuri to her. Hibino wonders if it's ok for Utao to battle the dangerous Amaterasu but Utao reveals she senses Kirio inside. Kyouhei agrees that is possible since Amaterasu tried to devour Aki back then. Utao accuses Kyouhei of getting carried away during battle and not sensing Kirio inside Amaterasu. Utao repeats how she wants Kukuri to be a good benevolent god for helping people. Kyouhei concedes that Utao has matured over the past 8 months and agrees to return Kukuri. Utao is alarmed that Moyako is sending Yurako over to repair Kukuri's body because Moyako has to head back to the workshop and attend to all other kakashi's. Meanwhile, the Hyuga are having an argument and blaming Koushiro's father for letting the Kuga take charge. The Kuga elders at the shrine are also plotting to use the situation to their advantage. Atsushi's mother is shutting herself in her room, staring at young Atsushi's photo, and refusing summons to join the meetings at the shrine. Her brother worries that her condition worsened ever since she found out Aki had escaped. It is particularly hard for her to accept her only child being killed by her husband's lovechild. Back then, Aki's father had died, leaving his mistress to come begging the Kuga to take in Aki. They regret letting Aki's father marry into the Kuga family. Akatsumi shoves chocolate down his throat while he patrols on his kakashi. While Utao performs the ceremony to regain control of Kukuri, Hibino volunteers to help Kyouhei's mother prepare food for the villagers. Kyouhei suggests Hibino take a bath. As if on cue, Shion arrives with a change of clothes for Hibino, but worries they might not fit her bust... Hibino and Shion enter the bath for some fanservice. Shion comments how well developed Hibino is, and asks if that's how she snagged Kyouhei. They talk about how Kyouhei hesitates in his own affairs but never falters when it comes to others. Hibino wishes Kyouhei would take more initiative since he hasn't even officially asked her out yet. Meanwhile, Kyouhei comically sneezes as a result of being talked behind his back. Mahiru also sneezes; she is freezing cold riding with Aki back to the village. She says Aki should be a gentleman and lend his jacket but Aki replies that she was the one who refused it... for being too smelly. Mahiru tells Aki to hurry, but he says there's an ominous feeling... While Aki is pondering how the feeling is at the same time familiar but different, Mahiru gets angry at him for ignoring her. They run into Akatsumi. Spoiler for Chapter 52:
At the hospital, Kuuko's father Karahari is going over the now awakened Hirashiro's testimony with him. Hirashiro's political life is over but he tells Karahari that Kuuko is most likely heading to the village. Meanwhile, Kuuko and Shimoyama are hiking towards the village. Kuuko chastizes Shimoyama for being an out of shape villager while Shimoyama counters that all the villagers use cars. They hide from the patrolling Akatsumi and Shimoyama wonders why he's uncharacteristically out of the house. Aki fails to recognize Akatsumi and only identifies him through his kakashi, while Akatsumi is surprised to find Mahiru with Aki. They find out Kyouhei got back to the village when Akatsumi yells at Aki for reacting the same way as Kyouhei. Mahiru calls Akatsumi a fat pig and vehemently denies anything between her and Aki. She further declares that her brother-sister relationship with Akatsumi ended ages ago. Akatsumi reveals that the village is in chaos due to Old man Hyuga going rogue with Amaterasu. He ponders how to handle Aki and Mahiru without prior orders but decides to attack. Back to the hospital, Hirashiro reveals the truth of the kakashi to Karahari. In ancient times, an inventor was involved in some political intrigue and escaped to settle in the remote Karakami village. As thanks, he created several kakashi for the villagers. At that time, the village was plagued by natural disasters and invaders so the kakashi naturally became their guardian gods. Karahari refuses to believe these ancient things can fly but Hirashiro points out even Leonardo da Vinci designed helicopters. Aki drops off Mahiru and battles Akatsumi, whose Kagutsuchi seems to specialize in long range attacks, with detachable attack pods that can fly independently. Kuuko watches the battle with excitement but wonder why Aki seems to be losing. Shimoyama also thinks Aki should be stronger, wondering if he lost his skills due to years of prison. Mahiru is also suspicious that Aki lost to her too easily and only fought Utao to a standstill. Aki manoeuvers Kuramitsuha to slice Kagutsuchi and angers Akatsumi, who fires at full power, causing an explosion. Hibino dresses in shrine clothes and Kyouhei compliments her look. Moyako calls Shion back and tells her that the modifications to unseal Kamotaketsuno would take 3 days. Shion decides there's not enough time and goes to retrieve her kakashi. Yurako arrives to repair Kukuri and freaks out Utao with the Utao doll. Kyouhei finally has some alone time with Hibino. He apologizes for all the trouble but Hibino says it was her decision to come. Kyouhei promises he will protect Hibino even at the cost of his life but Hibino just wants everyone to return to Tokyo safe and sound. Kyouhei agrees. The next day, Yurako has finished fixing Kukuri's body and Utao flies to Moyako's place to reattach the arms. Kyouhei declares he has his own tasks to complete. Spoiler for Chapter 53:
Old man Hyuga Sahei's concubine Ayame visits him out in the woods and asks to serve him until the very end. Amaterasu is wrapped in another cocoon while it regenerates and evolves. Sahei notes that its regenerating much faster than before and is also using camoflage. Ayame observes that its size is increasing. Shion retrieves Kirio's Takemikazuchi from the ruins. Though there is no seki to control it, Takemikazuchi still has use as backup (foreshadowing I guess). Moyako's grandfather begins work to upgrade Kukuri. Moyako explains Kukuri's left hand to Utao. It turns out some of the kakashi's were equipped with special items based on the 3 Sacred Treasures of Japan (the sword, the mirror and the jewel). The mirror Yata no Kagami is the only surviving item and is installed in Kukuri's left hand. The mirror has the ability to absorb, amplify, and redirect energy. Kyouhei is the only one who is able to use it. Moyako suggests Kyouhei probably unconsciously helped her use it back in Tokyo. Moyako points out that Kyouhei's specialties are the mirror and the eye beam, both powerful offensive weapons for aerial combat. However, since their mission is to rescue Kirio, Utao's training in close quarter precise control should come in handy. Besides, there are also Souya's Mikumari and Akatsumi's Kagutsuchi to supply heavy firepower. Finally, Kukuri is the only kakashi with claws to catch people. To demonstrate, Moyako throws an egg into the air for Utao to catch using Kukuri's claw. (Utao sure has come a long way from the beginning when she had trouble receiving a cup using Kukuri.) Moyako points out Kyouhei's wish to walk out of the village with his head up high, so he really shouldn't be taking part in battles. Meanwhile, Kyouhei confronts his father about Kirio. Kyouhei explains that Old man Hyuga is most likely responsible for Amaterasu devouring Kirio and going on a rampage. Kyouhei demands to know why Kirio was given to the Hyuga. Kyouhei's father asks what he intends to do afterwards. Kyouhei says he will disclose everything so that Kirio can be with his mother and Utao. However, Kyouhei's father says it's actually better if Kirio leaves the village for a new life because he was not taken by force -- the Kuga family head sold him to the Hyuga. Back when Kyouhei's grandfather became the Kuga family head, he was very prideful and competitive. He active courted influence outside the village to oppose Hyuga Sahei. However, his efforts to establish ties with politicians and industrialists were foiled by the yakuza who set him up for a sex scandal. The woman was the daughter of some government official, so it became a huge issue. Their goal was to obtain the forest and land around Karakami village, which could be used for lumber and building resorts. However, the forest is crucial to maintaining the kakashi tradition. Losing the forest would mean the destruction of the village. No one knows how he did it, but Hyuga Sahei stepped in and cleaned up the entire mess discreetly. This left the Kuga in great debt towards the Hyuga. When rumors came out that Kyouhei's mother was pregnant with a baby that could communicate with kakashi from the womb, Hyuga Sahei requested they hand over the child. In the end, it turned out to be twins so they only gave away one of them. Kyouhei asks if his mother knew about this, but she doesn't remember anything because the crooked doctors at the shrine drugged her. After Kyouhei's last visit, Kyouhei's father investigated and found out from an old servant who had retired into seclusion. Kyouhei asks his father if he did anything but he sadly admits that he gave up opposing his father and brother ever since he was recalled back to the village from academic life. Kyouhei storms off. Souya returns from his patrols unable to locate Amaterasu. Some villagers comment it is rare to see Souya in action nowadays and Souya says shrine business is too busy and he'd gladly pass on his seki duties if he could find a successor. Moyako yells at Akatsumi for getting his kakashi damaged but is shocked to be told it was Aki. Akatsumi mentions that Mahiru was with Aki and that they got away. Moyako throws stuff at Akatsumi when he asks if they have any food for him. Preparing food for the villagers, Kyouhei's mother praises Hibino's speed and skill in shaping riceballs. They notice Kyouhei leaving the Kuga home in a rage. Meanwhile, Old man Kuga is meeting with his eldest son (Souya's father) and grandson (Souya). Confident that the 2 families' resources will put down Amaterasu, they decide to use the opportunity to remove the Hyuga once and for all. As part of eliminating evidence of their shameful past (selling Kirio to settle a debt), Souya is ordered to destroy all traces of Amaterasu and who/whatever is in it. Souya asks no matter who is in Amaterasu? "You don't need to know." Souya's father threatens him not to question orders if he wants to continue living in the village with his current prestige and status. Kyouhei bursts in at this point. Spoiler for Chapter 54:
Mahiru wakes up to find someone over her and knocks down Shimoyama with a good punch to the face. She was knocked out during Aki's battle with Akatsumi. Kuuko vs Mahiru Round 2 ensues with Mahiru winning by evading Kuuko's signature finger grab and snap. Aki heads somewhere, saying to himself there is only one place to go. Kuuko examines a ruined kakashi which Mahiru recognizes (with some hesitation) as Amaterasu which Kyouhei destroyed 8 years ago. If that's the case, how is there another Amaterasu for Old man Hyuga to revive? Akatsumi thanks Moyako for repairs while Moyako says she will add the cost of restocking her fridge to his repair bill. Moyako brings Utao to see the upgraded Kukuri which her grandfather had been working on. The revived Amaterasu emerges from its cocoon as a flying fortress. Kuuko breaks the outer layer of the ruined kakashi and picks up something resembling one of the 3 Sacred Treasures of Japan -- the jewel Yasakani no Magatama. She stuffs it in her bag and continues her way with Mahiru and Shimoyama At the shrine, Kyouhei says he overheard everything and he knows all about Kirio. Kyouhei demands that they save Kirio, reveal the truth to Kyouhei's mom and take Kirio back to the Kuga family. They simply ignore him, but then they catch Hibino eavesdropping. When they threaten Hibino to force Kyouhei to comply, Kyouhei grabs a machine gun. Believing Kyouhei doesn't have the guts to fire the gun, the Kuga surround him. Gunshots ring out. Meanwhile, Shion discovers Amaterasu and calls Moyako to report and request backup. Utao sets off with an upgraded Kukuri that looks more heavily armored. I noticed that the Chapter 1 title page has Utao with a bunch of Kakashi in the shadowy background. Do you think the author has most, if not all, of the Kakashi designs locked down before the start of the series?
Spoiler for THE Hibino scene:
During the Hibino falling from the Kukuri scene, I wished the anime was more faithful and animated the Sion flyby, which was the reason Utao lost control in the first place. This was in volume 3 or 4 I believe and Sion's real debut is in volume 8. That's some good foreshadowing there.
