I don't expect a movie to retell the manga story down to the most minute of details of course, OTOH it were the characters of Light and L that made Death Note into such a hit, so the director should have stuck with mangaka's characterization of Light. Instead, he made Fujiwara's Light into a common or garden psycho rather than a brilliant megalomaniac (and exposed his shortcomings as an actor). Heh, when L can counter Yagami's insistent wines 'why do you keep suspecting my son' by a simple 'have you taken a good look at him lately', there's something seriously wrong with the adaptation.
As for Naomi, I hate manga and anime treatment of 99.9% of women, so any deviation is a welcome relief. |

Just saw the movie. Obviously due to me having seen the anime beforehand the movie seemed a bit rushed. But I guess it was done fairly well considering the limitations of a two hour movie with all this content. And the actor for L was very good, although I feel like his character feels a bit different and not as smart as in the original. Yagami didn't seem to respect him as much as in the anime. Also it seemed like the story with Light and Naomi was less calculated - in the anime he's careful to make sure no hint of suspicion can be taken from her, in the movie he walks off after she has accused him of being Kira......
But all in all, I think it was a good film adaptation of the original, and it definitely could have been a lot worse.

There's one thing I want to clarify.
The upcoming Death Note movie...Death Note Gaiden that's going to have L as the main character, presumably as a prequel movie... Is it going to be a canon prequel, or is it in the same reigns as the 1967 Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again of the 007 trilogy, as in non-canon productions?

I saw the DT Movie 1 again yday I just noticed how poor chracterisation or personality is potrayed as compared to anime . I mean the actor who potrays Light is below average also doesnt look Light . Atleast L actor looks like L but his acting doesnt do justice to chara and his voice isnt that suited .
On a brighter note Yagami Sr and Ryuuku roles have been portayed with perfection IMO

The second Death Note movie (Death Note: The Last Name), which is out, continues the first movie, then it ends the story.
The upcoming one, Death Note Gaiden, will be about L, which should be a prequel. I thought L did really well in the second movie. Misa is <3able. |

I was amazed on how Ryuk and Rem looked in the movie. It was obviously CG, but it was close enough to be believable. In the anime, althought the artists do a good job rendering and animating the characters, it doesn't give out a full 3D realistic feel to it like CGI does. I'll give them points for that.
The story was pretty good, though now I want to read the manga to compare them. I know the anime's closer to the manga than the movie, but the way Last Name ended, it doesn't feel right. I know there were two more characters that were somewhat like L as well, but they were never introduced in the movies. |

just watched the first movie, couldn't resist as a torrent appeared here on animesuki...it was pretty good! it's quite different from the anime though many events happen the same way. if you've watched the anime up to episode 9, you won't be spoiled by the first movie.

Then, in the following scene with L eating the potato chips. It seems to make L more competent as an investigator.

I also felt L isn't protrayed as "brilliant" as I had imagined, and I thought Light didn't come accorss as "brillaint" at all, more like a sicko who enjoys killing anyone. (true but the brilliance as a being wise, was potrayed more as a smart jackass instead). His dad was brilliant! Perhaps the second movie will have more of a wits battle in it? |
