Well a background character can do it perhaps and that doesn't involve in the first high student maybe in the third high. That blonde girl in the third high that wants to be a rival of miyuki. Referring to the girl in the spin off manga of mahouka.

After knowing who is the enemy, tatsuya wen to yakuno to counter ghostwalker.
That night, he went to a meeting at kastuto and mayumi appeared surprisingly.
They decided that the meetings are held everyday at a shop near magic university.
Gu jie plan worked well. Even Kanon formed enmity with izumi. Takuma looked for maki for help to stop the media as he feel responsible as a 10mc.
Kuroba is able to use aura? To track people. Hence, he abet to a morgue to cast his tracking magic, to track gu Jie.toshikazu and his parthner went to find kyoko.
Tatsuya, kastuto and mayumi had their first meeting. Tatsuya arrived at university gate 5 minutes early and mayumi escorted him to the shop.
Tatsuya Sat beside mayumi and was opposite kastuto. At this moment, he remembered Mari conversation, wondered he has any feelings for mayumi.
Tatsuya provided the usna information. After the meeting, he escorted mayumi to her ride. It started to snow, and tatsuya covered mayumi with the umbrella, mayumi then hold onto his hand all the way to the stop.
kuroba found out gu jie place. All of the branch head and tatsuya went to catch him.
They didn't managed to catch him but found out that he was using enhanced people from the military.
toshikazu contacted kyoko, then found out inagaki was feeling well. Kyoko and 101is currently investigating Zhou incident.
Shiba sibling for invited to kitayama house.
Shizuku father asked if they needed help, but was rejected by tatsuya.
If his family is involved, he will act upon it.koichi met with 上野 congressman and pressure him to stop secretly inciting the public.
Masaki arrived at first high, same class as miyuki. Tatsuya then told him about the meeting. After the meeting,he went back home first, questioning whether miyuki is acting differently recently.
Maya called and he explained to her that the military might be hiding gu Jie and reveal that mayumi is in the meeting. miyuki was very jealous.
During class, miyuki was practicing with masaki. Honoka asked masaki to have lunch together. (Might have the intention to couple up with miyuki).
At the lunch table, tatsuya ,hearing the conversation, felt that love is like a war. After school, tatsuya went to 101.
He explained to kazama about the military helping gu jie, and told him about yotsuba attacking a base. He wished kazama could pick up the pieces.
When tatsuya and kuroba twins entered the base, they interrupted by usna. Usna is able to get gu Jie Psion signature to track him down.

Seems like a pretty uneventful volume, all things considered.

2. that is the cliffhanger ending of this book, we should know how they get out of it next book.

quick thoughts, all the shipping interest made small, obvious progression, FujibayashiXToshikazu, TatsuyaXMayumi, etc. and some mild surprise, like Shippo revisit Maki, while HonokaXMasaki, depend on how the author like to go about it, is not impossible IMO,

MiyukiXTatsuya? they behave like old husband and wife, there is not much to go in there (smells of perfume, you see Mayumi today?)

Masaki lose to Miyuki in magic power and Tatsuya in precision control in one of the school exercise. (much easier compare to 3rd high version because it is not practical fighting, but demand endurance and control.)

Shippo is kind of being bleached, we know he will be alive three years from now, per author's words, as a magic u student started in his first film role opposite Maki.

Shizuku got one of the best choco giving sly of hand I had seen recently, Tatsuya, do you need a bag to hid the chocolate box? let me give you a hand bag.... *with chocolate in it.

Anti magic movement become bigger. 400-500 people gathered at magic university Gate. Inagaki head aches again, which worries Toshikazu. Under Maki help, Takuma allowed congressman to make an act, preventing the anti magic movement to stop rallying the people. Gu Jie felt anxious. Student started getting attacked. 2nd high girl student was attacked. Miyuki contacted minoru (vice president) to understand what happened.

Tatsuya warned Minami to be more alert and change the type of shield to use . Toshikazu met Erika whether she met inagaki. From Kyoko, inagaki headache might be from gu Jie manipulation. With Haruka help, they found him, lying down in a house. They then was ambushed and knocked out of consciousness.

Minami Miyuki Izumi got attacked by anti magician group with Psion interference, antinite. Both minami and izumi wasn't able to do anything. Miyuki apparently was able to do something about it. Toshikazu and inagaki is being manipulated by Gu Jie.

Tatsuya still see miyuki as a sister, still unable to respond to her feelings. But during Valentine, there is some "flashes" (scenes that show their love)
Tatsuya feels that miyuki might face some danger. However, tatsuya still went and investigate gu jie. He believes that miyuki can handle these people but if something happens. Then the book ended..

Chinese Vol18 Ch1 (or Ch6 technically, continuing count from Vol17) done. I'll post some tidbits, though I haven't been keeping track of posts in this thread so there may be double-ups even though I try to avoid them.

Spoiler for Tidbits:

-A short bit about Canopis, that as a soldier it's always painful to see civilians being hurt. Also resolves not to break rules to go after Heigu, as the difference between a terrorist and soldier is discipline.

-10MC meeting concludes, Katsuto heads the force stopping terrorists though Saegusa Tomokazu deals with things normally. Partly because Koichi wants to redeem himself to the rest of 10MC, partly because the district to hunt Heigu is under Juumonji and Saegusa control.

Tats and Masaki is under Katsuto's authority, even after Maya says the Yotsuba will be deploying Tats as a official measure from Yotsuba clan. It's expected students will be missing a month's work from school, and while Futatsugi has some concerns about students not meant to do such things Maya said after everything Tatsuya had done this past year it's kinda irrelevant.

-Maya called Tats later, telling him his mission. Heigu is to be 'made harmless', whether dead or alive is no concern. Kyouko is noted to have already told Tats that Katsuto is now Juumonji clan head, which makes Maya notes she needs to keep more caution on the military.

Yotsuba knew it was Heigu because of postcognition / psychometry magicians in their clan. Before then Tats didn't know Yotsuba has these magicians available. After call ends Maya is shown to be more worried than she showed Tats, because what was used was magic that read the dead's memories, and those memories dissipate within 3-4 days.

One last tidbit - Maya in Vol17 illustration is noted to be 47 years old, here in Vol18 it says her physical body is still only around 30 years old Yotsuba genes OP, as if that wasn't obvious when they got Tatsuya's Material Burst It's noted while Maya is a powerful magician she's no more fitter than any other 30 year old woman that makes the effort to keep up their beauty and health.

Masaki going to first high, oh that will be interesting. At least there seems to be a little action hear and there, for example the Kuroba twins and USNA's raid on the black sages hideout. But other than that its just another set up chapter, to hopefully an epic conclusion in vol 19(hoping Tatsuya's identity as Mahesvara, is revealed to his friends and others. Also that Mayumi and Tatsuya scene just sounds sweet
