It is. I've ran into a surprising amount of it while doing various Madoka Magica image searches.

I think the farther removed you get, time-wise, from a very popular anime, the more fanart pairings are rooted in simply how "hot" people find the visual of that pairing. I guess that for some, HomuSaya is the "hottest" possible PMMM pairing.

Similar height and body type probably helps. Makes the pairing look nicely symmetrical (Madoka's shortness and Mami's breasts could be issues here).

Blue and Black also works well as a color combination.

And now I have another weird Madoka Magica image to share with my fellow Madokamaniacs. I've seen images where two or more of the main cast switch costumes. I've seen images where two or more of the main cast switch colors. But I've never seen anything quite like this before...

I dub them Saymura and Homaka!

I have to say that Saymura looks just stunning and oh so cool to me. Homaka makes me think that massive explosions are going to happen any second now...

Enter this into the search bar: miki_sayaka akemi_homura -kaname_madoka

This will give you every image that includes Sayaka and Homura but without Madoka (this filtration is important for obvious reasons
