By the way, if you use Windows Media Player, you might like to know that WMP sends information about what's being played back to Microsoft.

Media Player Classic is just a few clicks away...

Windows Media Player for me. Why? Because it was the one easiest to set up in a way so that it can play all files. Winamp always get colors wrong (probably some conflict between codecs i guess)and i didn't like divx player.

Hello! Has anyone tried AIW Player? It's really cool... only 300 kb in exe size (if you want built in matroska, ac3, realmedia and vobsub you will have to download an additional component of only 600kb). In addition to beeing a video player that is close to MPC in appearance and functionallity (low proc usage and mem req) it can also tune tv stations and broadcast tv channels (tv-card needed) in LAN or over the internet.

mplayer -vop hqdn3d

I've not seen anything giving me better quality. Not that I've fiddled around that much with it though...

That's quite a complex question actually. Mplayer gives by far the best viewing experience, especially the instant jumping around with the arrow keys is wonderful, but it only works with avis, I couldn't get it to compile with ogm support. And it's only worthwhile with Linux, of course. VLC plays everything in Linux, (but I don't use it for avis because mplayer is better), but its subtitle selection won't work for me in Windows. So in Windows I use Media Player Classic for everything, but that's 6.4.6.4, because subtitle selection doesn't work for me in 6.4.7.5 either. Something's probably conflicting, I suppose.

Does Media Player Classic do frame captures yet? I've been perfectly happy with Windows Media Player 6.4 except that it won't do screengrabs. I tried BSPlayer for that, but I wasn't very keen on the interface. The seperate control window thing bugged me.

It's nice to see lots of available players these days, but it can be a little overwhelming when it comes to choosing a new one. All I'm after is something with a really simple, plain and non-intrusive interface (like MP6.4), but will let me capture frames. Any pointers?

Oh, and on Linux I've been using Totem, a GTK frontend for Xine.

Do try AIW Player. It's interface is even lighter than MPC's and in VMR9 you can make every screenshot you want.

mplayer has (I think) built in support for ogm files. Only problem is you have to use ogminfo to find the correct audio and subtitle streams then use "mplayer -aid x -sid y file.ogm" to view it.

You have to mess around with mplayer to play mkv files though but it's not difficult to make it work.
