From what I understand, OBSTACLE, is the world after GENESIS. And in OBSTACLE, it repeated the circle of FORTH, AHEAD, EDGE and GENESIS all over and over again. It's like saying Toori and Co. save the world and rebuild the world (history/FORTH), then it get developed and enter the GENESIS phrase again. It just getting repeated time after time until the CITY stage, when everything come together become stable after all the hardship. It's like a true harmony stage...

Correct me if I'm wrong...

The whole city-verse contains of six series

FORTH -> AHEAD -> EDGE -> GENESIS -> OBSTACLE -> CITY

FORTH era is about the current world
There is one finished series - "連射王".

AHEAD era is about the current world but with a bit different
There is one series in AHEAD era - the Owari no Chronicle (the chronicle of the End).
Human discovered the 11 parallel worlds (1st to 10th G "Gear" and the TOP-G). There was a war between the Gs. Only the LOW-G (our world) survived and all others Gs were destroyed. The inhabitants of the Gs brought their "Concept Core" to LOW-G and tried to adapt to the new world.
side note: "Concept Core" - maybe you can understand it as "The laws of everything"
However, the saturated and uncontrollable influence of "Concept" began to encroach the world. In order to stop the world end, our hero Sayama Mikoto and his merry friends "negotiated" with the descendants of the Gs. He had to persuade them to let the LOW-G control and manage the Concept Cores.
The story was about their "negotiation"
At the end, they succeed to let all those concept run through the world.

In EDGE era, human could go into space from the advance technology based on the AHEAD period and the new found fuel "Ether".
There is no series in EDGE era.

In GENESIS era, human returned to the Earth and found the world inhabitable. They have the technology from AHEAD and EDGE era but more of the technology were lost. Human are unable to return to the space/heaven again. Then, they start a "History Recreation Project" and believe that they can return to the space/heaven by that.
The story of Toori and Horizon begin here.

OBSTACLE era is when the world rebuilds and destroys itself. The world is similar to all the other period because it is like a recurring cycle.
There are only short stories and settings in OBSTACLE era.

CITY era is when all the technologies developed from the OBSTACLE come together. Human were close to the brink of extinction several times.
There are also only short stories in CITY era.

Unfortunately, a useful site about kawakami sensei's novel was closed few days ago. So, I can't get more info from that. I may need some times to get it back.

Also, I may post about the links between the OnC and KnH series later.

I don't get it too
from the source, I think it should mean "the world live in a cycle of destroy and rebuild"
It seems that it is not related to the "FORTH --> AHEAD --> EDGE --> GENESIS" cycle
The only thing related to the previous series is "Ether/Fluid"

Let's say FORTH is the start of it all, and GENESIS mentions about the world end. In the translation, OBSTACLE also said to be similar to other world. So that became my speculation, where the world is looping, but it's still very confusing...

My take on it, based on everything so far, is that OBSTACLE is a repeat from FORTH to GENESIS. Though, I dunno how many times the repeat happened.
