Let's see... We use secret hand signs and code words- We carry out closed off meetings with faceless and voiceless individuals hiding behind computer screens- Our activities mainly takes place in the unholy hours of the night- And we worship false idols.
...Yeah, I don't think I'll be sharing this with anyone that doesn't already know...

I agree, my buddies poke fun at times "watch any anime porn?". I don't mind the joke, I think its funny, but I feel that if people know you like anime, they assume you watch Hentai and have sex dolls or some crazy crap.

I don't tell no one even my family, friends and lover. In a sense I am what you would call an Clotaku (Closet Otaku). and I hid it well over the years and no one has ever notice from 1st year high school to the present.
Cause I think they would think I'm weird considering I'm already in my 20's and still watch anime. |

I'll only say I watch anime if some directly ask me if I watch it, otherwise I just don't say a thing. Though around friends, we do talk about anime but since they rarely see the same anime that I do or have an in depth knowledge about anime, it is always short.

I don't go around telling people I watch anime, but if the topic comes up, sure.
Plus, my ringtone is FMA (2003) first ED, a pretty recognisable peace for anime fans, and a normal tune for others. If people recognise it — they come out and talk |

I do tell people I watch anime. Spending several hours a week watching anime makes it a part of my life, so eventually it comes up in a conversation. Funny thing is their reactions are always like ‘’I never thought that you were into that kind of stuff’’. So people do have a stereotype in mind when mentioning it. They immediately think of pokemon, digimon, yugioh, beyblade etc. (those were actually awesome, good times) so yeah surprised I am not some weird freak who gets bullied all the time eh…
I don’t feel embarrassed about when I tell people, why should I? For their ignorance? It’s a hobby of mine. Surely a lot of them would enjoy at least some animes, if they only knew. I managed to get lots of people watch the movie Akira and they all thought is was great. Love it when I meet someone that also watches anime (we can talk about it for hours anyone can relate heh?), somehow we always end up as friends lol. But unfortunately that does not happen often so here a reason why I joined the forum . |

That quote is SO true. I've met quite a bit of people that I would have never guessed that they watched anime. Some pretty attractive girls too

do people bother you because you watch anime
A lot of people bother me because I watch anime. Well I'm an anime-atic which means I watch anime like 24/7. People think I'm crazy because I like watching these things. Does anyone bother you because you watch anime???

It depends on what you mean by 'bother'. Assuming it is to mean "do people bug me about my anime interests", then no. Everyone has their own interests and in my case, it happens to be anime. I personally find it to be a good form of escapism when done in moderation.
I think said people are referring to the volume, not the content. You're certainly not crazy for enjoying (what I find to be) a unique form of media that presents stories and events not found in other forms of entertainment |

Anything excessive in this world is not good. A simple example: eating is inherently good, but if you eat too much, it becomes bad. Same like watching anime. So, imo, watching anime as a hobby is cool as long as you put your duties as a part of the society first. If you’re a student, you should focus on your study first before watching anime; as a worker, you should focus on your job first; as a child, you should focus in helping your parents/family (by doing some house chores for example) in any way you can before indulging in your leisure activities; if you’re a family-man, take care of your family first before doing your “fun-activities”. If you do that, and do your duties well, I think most people won’t bother you anymore about your hobby (unless they really hate animes). In short, show it to them that your anime-watching hobby doesn’t degenerate you, or hinder your personal achievement as a social being.

In response to the original question, I might mention it in passing as an interest if asked about it, amongst several others. Moderation is king here |

whenever i wear a one piece shirt bunch of kids would stare at me as if im some sort of a darth vader. i remembered one time i was eating in a nearby restaurant and heard one middle school kid say alright! another one piece fan, then i noticed i was wearing a chopper shirt. i guess i dont need to talk about me being into manga or anime, because it has become part of me. |

One's appearance does tend to speak volumes about the individual. It's a black T-shirt depicting all the mobile suits and vehicles operated by Amuro Ray from Mobile Suit Gundam to Char's Counterattack. I can't find it anywhere online, so I must've gotten real lucky in Hong Kong. There was another one featuring all Char's MS and vehicles.
