I really wonder where they would go from here... Would the author backtrack to Vol 2 & 4? Or would he continue to push on to 6?

Are volumes 2 & 4 vital to the overall plot of the series?

Volume 4, yes most definitely.

Volume 2... Not so much, but it does introduce Himegami and the Rome Catholic Church and more about the grimoires. I heard that the anime cut out alot of details so I'm not sure of the full extend of the book.

I don't mind much about volume 2 but if volume 4 is not going to be done, then there might be a plothole as to how Touma would learn of the existence of Saints and Angels.

Unless if the Comic Guide 5.5 does that dirty work of explanation... Talking about it, nobody seems to scan it...

And not forgetting the revelation of Tsuchimikado, that man is a vital point connecting both Science and Magic world.

About Vol.2 CoughAleisterCoughCrowley cough cough.... <_<.

Vol.4 is obligatory to know about Tsuchimikado's truth, the Saints, Angels and why Touma becomes scared when hears about them.

I think that vol 2 quite important, since it introduce us to the roman chatolic, the powerfull gregorio choir spell, the effects of esper who uses magic, and touma 1st re-encounter with the magic side after losing his memories.
And yes, aside of not mentioning the saint, angel and tsuchimikado, the lost of vol.4 is where kaori appeared again ,it also has conection with the 7th vol, with the amakusa and roman catholic arc..

Btw,does the amakusa play a vital role after the 7th vol? If not probably the author will skip it again to the 9th vol,the daihaisei event(since the index anime last eps is foreshadow that event IMHO) and not to mention that he most probably skip the 8th vol..

Well, yes they do. Also, during the part when Laura was talking to Stiyl in the anime, it's also foreshadowing about the events in Vol 7. Laura said that they can't contact Kanzaki, so...

We'll be expecting the Amakusa Arc as the first season of Index in 2011 or Winter 2010.

At that rate I can only consider that if no sequel was made it's going to be the most insane decision.

And, Marcus, I hope your guess is right... I wonder how far I'll plummet into the sky out of joy upon hearing it.

Anyway, did anyone get a hold of a copy of Toaru Majutsu no Index Comic Guide 5.5? I wonder what's inside.

I have that, and it's not really that useful.

There are the usual character profiles, basic info about the Science and Magic sides, glossary of terms, authors' interviews, Komoe's Advice Corner (just for laughs), Tsuchimikado and Blue Hair Pierce's Fashion Snap (just for laughs), and some quizzes.

I didn't read it in detail, but I didn't see anything especially important while skimming through it.

Kaori is a confirmed entry, but Itsuwa... if the rumors about an Amakusa member Touma saved was true, then we'll be seeing her too.
